Pretty much. Everybody just follows the scouting services rankings. If he has 4 stars we drool. Five stars we cry. 3 stars we relunctantly give approval. Rinse.. Repeat...

That's because generally the star system is accurate. There are always exceptions of course, but those are almost always done in hindsight, not prior to a college career.

You know whats a common thread with all those Cinderella teams? Experience. Most of the teams are senior heavy teams that have been playing together for years. They know the system, they understand what their roles are, and they execute to the best of their abilities. That makes up for a lot of the gap but you see most years they will eventually run into a team that has more talent and can execute. Look at every team in the final 4 this year and see they all have talent but also a lot of experienced players.

We want to be the team that has the heart, grit, BB IQ, chemistry, but also the talent because that's what goes deep into the tourney, and historically that's where we have been. Our most successful seasons what have we had? Not only the talent to win, but players that have the experience too. Gotta have that blend to really be a successful program.

Long story short, gotta have the talent (and have that talent stick around for awhile) if you really want to win at the highest level.

...unless you're coach cal.

Right, have we ever taken a 3 star where collectively a large portion of the fanbase hasn't provided excuses why they were 3 star (didn't play on a big AAU team, late bloomer, etc).

Jaylon Tate to name one.

Tate's one of the guys we got who saw his ranking drop over time. As a soph I believe he was top 100 and had some offers from programs like Xavier. Another that comes to mind would be Rich Semrau, we were excited because we "beat out" UNC, Ohio St and others but those offers probably has expired by the time we landed him.

"Tate can score, he's just deferring to Jabari and Nunn. Go look at his Sophmore highlights, was top 100 before the transfer."

I only watched the one recent 5 minute highlight video of Matt, and I don't know enough to offer an opinion if we're missing out. It seem possible he could be a high major player, and possible he may not.

He also may be more athletic than just that video showed, but I certainly didn't see anything from an athleticism viewpoint that Malcolm Hill wouldn't be able to do with ease on his way to 50 a night against that competition (obviously this is unfair, as he's been training in a B1G weight room for 3 years). While there is a real chance Malcolm's "lack" of athleticism *may* prevent him from being in the NBA, posters downplay how athletic many of these guys, including Malcolm are when comparing to High School.

Could someone please post the video so we can all see what this non-recruit looks like. This guy appears to becoming a legend! Thanks

Please help: I just watched a highlight reel for the Chastain kid from Leroy, and I don't understand why we aren't involved/recruiting him. I know it's just a highlight reel, but he looks very athletic, nice shot, plays hard...really looks like a player to me. What am I missing?

Thanks, I'll hang up and listen.

That's a pretty reliable system.

Until we get commits, then it's a hotly contested matter of if we can keep them on campus or if they'll declare early, regardless of rankings.

I just watched these highlight films for the first time on this kid.... I would definitely take a chance on him IF he is interested and if he knows his role. He is not going to be a starter, but he can certainly play 10 minutes a game by the time hes a junior. I understand he played 1A, but you can see the talent. He has pure talent, and the kid can play. If there is a scholarship then I would like to see them offer him.

Also, that jump shot will get BEAT up and down the court in B1G if he doesnt switch up his release. His release takes a lot of time, would like to see him speed it up a little. I like what I see, could be a very solid mid major guy. Does anyone know if Illinois is actively recruiting him and if he is interested in illinois?

I almost hate to keep this topic going but since someone asked, here's the supersectional game LeRoy and Chastain played against Newark. I saw him in 3 games and this is the one he played the best. Newark was 28-2 going into the game with their only 2 losses coming to 4-A schools from Rockford. They had pretty good size. Also, the announcers are not only very amateurish, they're also from Newark, but they admit Chastain is a pretty decent player. I personally think he's a very good player, will play D-1 somewhere, but is not a B1G player.

I don't get this line of thinking. Why take a kid that you think at best could be a 10 min per game as a JR? Id hope JRs and SRs should be depended on for bigger minutes.

The point is there isn't a scholarship & as scholarships might open up first priority is likely to be a big for this coming year (5th year replacement for Thorne), a big still around for 2017, or pg if we can raise the position/reduce risk. With Hill/Nunn (SR), JCL/DJW/AJ (SO), Kipper (FR), Pickett/Damonte (2017) wings shouldn't be a priority.

I don't think anyone has claimed Illinois is recruiting him. I think interest is mostly assumed since if offer list is rather small at this point.

It isn't remotely true that everyone knew what Hill would be.

I should say, anyone that saw Hill play in HS and with AAU. You obviously did not. Or just don't have an eye for that sort of thing. Either way it's okay.

That kid can play bottom line , but we're not even recruiting him so it's like arguing for nothing but if they did offer him he won't be the worst recruit we've offered.

I think middle tennessee's" non B10 caliber" players could finish in the top half of B10.

I just think when you have the mindset of labeling "b10 caliber" against juniors in HS, you are unnecessarily filtering out alot of good players ...we've watched it multiple times.

????? They would be fighting with Rutgers for last place. They played one great game, did you see them against Syracuse(who lost to St. Johns this year and now is in Final Four.) MSU beats them 99 times out of a 100 times. Basing predictions on one game is insane.

Ok well he was 70 rsci and now as a junior is a unanimous 2nd team B1G pick I think you could argue that since there was no way he was one of the top 10 recruits from the B1G over the last few years that he has played above what people expected of him.

Chastain hype has gotten out of control. The kid is a good player. You put him on the court with a bunch of high major D-1 players though and he won't stand out. Suddenly his shot becomes a little harder to get off. His ballhandling is not good enough to take a good defender off the dribble.
