Agreed. IDKWTI and QS come to mind.

Edit: I see others already pointed this out.

Yeah, but 2 guys out of the last 35 or so verbal commits, both with very unique situations isn't that bad, especially when compared to the number of recruits who have told coaches at many schools they'd be committing but back out.

In addition, I hate that I've played this role of wait it out as long as I have here.

If Tilmon had a change of heart and changed schools, it would hurt the same amount weather you bought the hype now or were guarded.

That's my point. Committing is cause for a small and temporary celebration. Kind of like beating your arch rival in the regular season, knowing full well you're gonna have to face them again in the playoffs.

It's not over until the pen is to the paper.

Maybe I misread/understood your point. More so for the people removing the nut cup now like bad news a month from now would hurt more or less. If you read this board, You lost the nut cup long ago.

no. coaches can still contact recruits electronically or written (call, text, DM). They cannot meet them in person.

A recruit could announce his commitment during this time, but most high-profile recruits want a presser in his HS gym or want to commit on the campus they're committing to. Since a coach couldn't attend a press conference, and he can't see him on campus, most recruits don't commit during a dead period.

so we should expect a presser next thursday at noon

Too much smoke? Coming from here? Come on. Until we are hearing it more credible sources such as a Bossi, Sturdy, Piper, Werner, etc....then it's nothing at all.

Listened to Werner on the radio today and he said he and Piper talked to someone very in with this recruitment and said Illinois is in very good shape.

If Eric Gordon and Quentin Snider haven't taught Illini fans that.. I'm not sure we'll ever learn.

In my 50 years as a fan, the only two recruits who reneged on a public verbal were these two out of staters. No Illinois prep has ever backed out of a commitment.

Tilmon is interesting because I consider him an Illinois prep even though he played in Indiana this year.

Man it'd be so cool if we took a piece away from UNC.

Don't recall any coach has ever attended one of these "press conferences" that the kids put on to announce their school, so that would not be a reason to hold off on scheduling a presser during the dead period.

You're right. In the traditional "choose the hat" press conferences, coaches aren't present. but you would probably want to be able to talk to your coach in person before you announce or soon after.

Again, logistically, I don't think any recruit needs to talk to a coach in person before or soon after an announcement. I think most recruits call the coaches in question to break the news to them, otherwise, it would require a lot of unnecessary travel, especially if a recruit on the east coast was committing to a school on the west coast.

It just so happens that a lot of times, the announcements come after a recent campus visit or in-home visit.

Long story short, if Tilmon wanted to commit to the Illini during the dead period, I don't think coach Groce would complain about not being told in person. He would be perfectly happy with a phone call. Thus, the rumors that a commitment could come next week.

Any recruit would reconsider. The important question would be who the new coach was and whether they could build a relationship with the "committed" recruits to keep them on board fast enough (or at all).

A prime example of that...Mike Thorne. Illinois snagged him before going on visits to Kentucky and Kansas, and both of those teams showed interest in him.

The fishing trip comes to mind...
