Interesting pickup. What is his rank?

The 247 site has him at 185 nationally, 42nd best shooting guard nationally and 9th best prospect in the state of Illinois for the 2017 class. Expect to hear a lot about him being undervalued and Illinois securing a commitment before the flood of blue bloods jump in.

In my opinion, the staff is hoping this will help with bigger commitments in Goodwin and Tilmon. An athletic scorer (he is putting up bigger numbers this year) with upside who will help them get in the ears of bigger fish.

Groce has a history of being a great evaluator of talent so I'll go with that on this one. But would like to see some more schools interested go be more confident of it

Pretty bad list of offers from this guy. Even Weber was a better recruiter.

Yeah, because a player's list of offers is the sole determinant in how good they'll be. :hand: Although Groce certainly hasn't landed as many recruits as I'd like, he has proven he usually is a good evaluator of talent and I'll trust him over someone who most likely has never seen Pickett play. Pickett also is close with Goodwin and Tilmon and could potentially help us land them. No need to be so negative on a solid start to our 2017 class.

I don't care how many offers he had before and how many stars he has. I'm just happy that Pickett committed today. This kid has a lot of great potential and could be the igniter of a solid 2017 class. Illinois needed good news on the recruiting front and this is it.

Welcome aboard Javon!

I saw that 247sports has him rated in the 180s as a 3-star but if people are saying that he took the next step, then he's probably a 4-star kid at the end of the day. Also, if he's close to Goodwin(who is currently a 4-star in the 90s) and Tilmon, then this could be a potentially good start for us.

It is nice that the kid seems to be aware of the injury situation and isn't holding that against the school.

I like my "eye test" more than rankings (Pickett). My eye test two years ago told me that Glynn Watson wasn't our next PG, my eye test now says he has developed into one. Kipper Nichols was rated somewhere 250, although he took his team to the finals and I believe won it one year. He has grown a couple of inches and no way is he a 250 rank recruit coming to Illinois.

I haven't seen Pickett play, just have read that he has been on Illini's radar and making a buzz. My main concern is our over abundance of SG/Wings and light at PG and PF/C. On a side note there our times when we get a recruit who has Illinois written all over him and is above the mid/major and below the blue chippers and we get a commit without much fuss. DJ and AJ were these type of recruits IMHO.

I like my "eye test" more than rankings (Pickett)... I haven't seen Pickett play

You like your "eye test" with respect to Pickett versus the rankings but you have not see him play. So, there is no "eye test." :D

I do not think your eye test is needed when Watson burned us today for 17. You do not need an "eye test" for that, all you need is eye(s).

If you actually saw Watson in HS and believed he was not good, it is not exactly a ringing endorsement of your "eye test." :D

Yes I saw Watson as a junior when we were making our PG recruitment priorities and Watson seemed to play out of control and without a good jumper. He was very thin as well. Now when I see Watson he has developed into a very good player, two years difference and he has made the jump when others don't. I haven't seen Pickett live and only limited on video, so I trust Groce's opinion above the recruiting services. What I have seen of Pickett is that he has a good motor and good size and athleticism. Seems more of a WF than a SG at this point.

Javon Pickett is a bit of a late bloomer and the rankings haven't really caught up yet. He has just started to blow up this season. I would expect his rankings to shoot up this summer. A really solid player that's worth getting excited about imo. :illinois:

I like the pickup of Pickett on its own accord. If if helps with either Goodwin or Tilman that's a bonus.

+1, strange that a guy is averaging 24 (or is it 29? I've read two #s) and isn't being heavily recruited by other P5s... what gives?

Breakout season, and Henricksen has him 4th in state. Best scout for Illinois hoops, pretty sure Joe has him ahead of Smith, behind only Eastern Timon and Goodwin

Do you think we still go after Goodwin now? I'd still love to have all three of those guys Joe ranked ahead of Pickett, except maybe replace Eastern with Damonte (not that I'd complain if we got either of them).

Yes, they are pushing for a Goodwin commitment. Pickett helps immensely with Goodwin, and helps with Tilmon. A Goodwin commitment helps immensely with Tilmon.

This is from Henricksen in August. I'd say we're very lucky to get Javon before he blew up any more this year and next spring/summer.
The hottest player in the Class of 2017 –– post-July evaluation period –– has been Belleville East’s Javon Pickett, who cracked the Hoops Report’s top 10 prospects earlier this year. Pickett, who didn’t have an offer before July, now sports offers from Illinois, Saint Louis, Illinois State, Loyola, Evansville, Drake, SIUE, Missouri State, SEMO, Tennessee State and UIC.

Does anyone know if Picket can play defense? Besides bigs, what we really need are guards who not only can score, but who also can stop the other team'so guards from driving to the basket as if no one is there.

Don't know if the orange kool-aid has worn off for any of you, but 2+ months later and I'm still ecstatic about the addition of Kipper!!! Well done Groce :congrats:
