I think all those tweets and interviews on Illini recruits asking them if they will stay at Illinois now that Groce has been fired, including the really bad interview yesterday asking the same question to Frazier even before Groce was fired, are insensitive and in very poor taste.

Recruits commit to specific coaches and schools. Asking them to answer this question before anyone even knows who the next coach will be is simply dumb. JMO.

I was on board until you added Bruninga. Lol. What offers does he have?

I like Bruninga. I don't pretend to be a high level evaluator, but he passes the eye test. He's agile and athletic. No one thought Alec Peters was worth a look and he's going to make money in the NBA.

It’s a crazy world where many millions of dollars and the future lives of so many professionals and their families are tied to what 17 and 18 year old young men decide to do. At that age, most everybody thinks they know something. Many find out they actually knew very little. The super talented ones will find their way into the pro ball ranks somewhere for some period of years as long as their bodies hold out. Then it’s on to real life. For the less talented ones, real life comes up faster. And real life is getting harder and worthwhile employment is getting harder to find. These young men have a lot to think about both on and off the court. The next Illini coach not only needs to resurrect a slumping program. He or she needs to be a life coach as well.

Independent of age though, it is a weird, awkward, and really bad question to ask. If I'm a Div. I highly ranked recruit, even with all my life experiences, and you ask me whether I will stay committed to UI, it would be dumb to even attempt to answer without knowing who the coach will be.

I watched the Summit league championship and this kid reminds me of Mike Daum from South Dakota State. Lightly regarded mall town Nebraska kid that is the player of the year in the Summit as a soph and getting NBA interest.

About the same size and both handle the ball well and can shoot the 3.

Many in the media salivate over getting the Gotcha Answer regardless of how tactless the question might be. Certain questions should not be asked at certain times. But by having a microphone shoved in your face and being asked a dumb question is part of the education process that will serve these young men well. They need to get used to this. More on the way.

Well now you're just being soft.

I really hope Tilmon stays, I think he could be the difference between us being an NCAA tournament team next year and us having a worse season than this year. I'm not saying he's gonna immediatley dominate the Big Ten, but without him we don't have a true 5.

Ah, but every journalist wants THE SCOOP. If they got one of these kids saying, "If Groce is gone, so am I," that would be huge news, would it not? It would light up this board like downtown Tokyo. And who's ever website would have that bump in traffic that webmasters dream of.

And that's why they ask those questions.

Amen to that. And really, kids. Everyone's life is determined by decisions made--many of them seemingly inconsequential--when a teenager. I think all of us can think of a random occurrence that took our lives in a completely different direction, the It's a Wonderful Life effect.

These kids drag a lot along in their wake.

Bruninga is a tough recruitment much tougher than Peters. Peters at least played at Washington who plays much tougher in-conference competition but also plays higher class ball. Bruninga and IB play very small and often not very good competition. He does pass the eye test and certainly is a D1 player but is he definitely a high D1 player is the question. Could be a steal for an ISU or Bradley type of program.

Let's face it...right now the Illini have much bigger issues to deal with in getting a new coach, keeping recruits and keeping returning players. If Walker/Whitman were to focus recruiting efforts it should be on keeping those commits and Mark Smith. No matter how good Bruninga ends up being I do not believe he will be in Smith's category. Smith can play.

I wouldn't argue that point for a minute. Smith could be a program changer. I hope Illinois gets a coach who trusts his own instincts enough to take the right player for his program, not just follow the rest of the sheep.

I'm sure they've been in his ear a lot longer than that. :tsk:

I don't think SLU proper needs to be in his ear. There are members of his family and inner circle that are pro-SLU, which is what led to the will-he or won't-he the week during signing period. [FONT=&quot]Plus, Josh saying it will be entirely the new coach's decision on whether to retain any of the current staff is probably not what the Tilmon's wanted to hear concerning Jamall. Jeremiah and his mother couldn't have been any clearer about that. And the whole group wanted to play for Groce, regardless of what people on here are projecting about it being a good thing with Smith that Groce was fired.

Didn't Frazier already say he was staying?

I thought the will-he or won't-he situation wasn't basketball related?;)

I said I'd never have a dog in my house, and yet here I sit with an 8 lb ankle biter napping in my lap...

That's not to say that I think Trent was lying, but I don't think you can definitively say yes he's staying committed, not without knowing who the next staff is

I would like to see these young men led by a new Illini coach in the spirit of a John Wooden. A great basketball mind, but a better leader of men.

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are." - John Wooden

Well you sure don't ask for much. I suppose a John Wooden type would be ok.
