I believe they are getting 9 official visits. And that's the number they'll have to work with for a while.. how long exactly? I'm not entirely sure. My guess is they won't get more until this time next year.

Kind of sad we might need start a OV spreadsheet much like the scholarship one lol

Even if IL does not start a spreadsheet, staff might want to consider starting one. What a screwup!

Hopefully, we'll get to use one of those on Whitney. Fingers crossed. 50/50 deal, lol.

50/50 as in half of the official visit list committed?

Yes I'm aware some players took their OV after verbally committing and that there are two transfers and two de-commitments on the list.

Yes we will never know if this could have had an affect on Okoro's decision and its unlikely given he was already very familiar with the program... but being able to offer an all expense paid weekend of wining and dining to push our product one last time after everyone else had made their pitch sure couldn't have hurt!

I kept hearing the staff knows how to count.
That was the previous staff, John Groce was a math teacher... these guys evidently not so much :noidea:

You would think he would have at least taught Walker how to count in their few years together, but then again based on player development maybe he wasn't such a good teacher

I'm beginning to think that QA might be on to something with the fact that he has been to everyone of Tshiebwe's tournaments this summer. Is it possible that we could wrestle him away from the favorite--WVU? Just a great fit for CBU's style. I don't think we have a shot at Kofi but Oscar would be a great plan B.

If DeLaRosa and Higgs didn't get OV's maybe they will get Papa Del's coupons when they arrive.:)

In fairness, 7 of those 24 were from Groce...then we lost a couple recruits after the coaching change and used 2 in the spring on bigs when we were desperate for bigs (so I put the first 9 on Groce & our roster balance problems). So Underwood follows that by a lot of early misses in fall for a new staff that hadn't had a lot of time to build relationships & then a roster blowout end of season. So last year we brought in 6 players (5 freshman last year + Alstork) & still had 2 open scholarships, then this year we bring in 6 again and still have an open scholarship. In hindsight, sure we could have/should have been more frugal in the fall, but I don't think 2 years ago anyone thought we would be trying to fill this many scholarships over the last 2 classes. With the number of schollies we have tried to fill in the last 2 years and scholarships open we have had, I think it would be a bigger crime would to be still sitting on unused officials.

I think this is where some on this board will throw in the towel:
UK has made some initial contact in his recruitment this month, and the Cats could make a bigger move for Tshiebwe after the final evaluation period of the summer this weekend.

This quote below from the article should tell you everything you need to know about where the recruitment of Tshiebwe is headed....

There weren’t many basketball recruits who generated more buzz during last weekend’s open evaluation period than Oscar Tshiebwe, a class of 2019 post player who outplayed No. 1 prospect James Wiseman and could be due for his own bump in the rankings.

Outplaying the No. 1 ranked prospect in a head to head battle will bring a number of new suitors for your services!

Okoro wouldn't really have had travel expenses, so I can't imagine a hotel room and steak dinner is the deciding factor.

I'm pretty sure this was visited in the spring, with someone (I apologize for not remembering who exactly) doing a ton of leg work figuring out on what date each recruit visited over the past 2 years. From what I remember, rolling means you get one back on the two year "anniversary" of when the previous visits occurred. So if we had someone visit on August 2nd, 2016, we would get a visit "back" on August 2nd, 2018. So you don't get them all back in a lump sum at the beginning of a year, but on a rolling basis over the course of the year.

Edit: Here's the list in it's original post from the April 2018 recruiting thread: (Credit goes to poster JJB)

"Permit the institution to provide up to 24 official visits in a rolling two‐year period" means a max 24 visits in any consecutive 24 month period. The 24 month period moves (rolls) as the calendar turns. I was curious and did some quick research to see where we stand with the official visit count. Based on what I could find (the dates may be off a day or two here/there), the list below looks like our last 24 official visits (note: Mark Smith never took an OV).

If it's accurate, we're tapped out on OVs until August 19, when we can have 1 OV until September 9. Then we can have 4 more OV and so on. Net result, we can have 7 OVs (through 5/31/19) for 2019 recruiting.

1. Trent Frazier (8/19/16)
2. Damonte Williams (9/9/16)
3. Jeremiah Tillmon (9/9/16)
4. Javon Pickett (9/9/16)
5. Kris Wilkes (9/9/16)
6. Abu Kigbab (9/16/16)
7. Mayan Kiir (10/7/16)
8. Greg Eboigbodin (5/31/17)
9. Matic Vessel (6/11/17)
10. Colin Castleson (9/1/17)
11.Landers Nolley (9/1/17)
12. George Conditt (9/15/17)
13. Amadou Sou (9/29/17)
14. Lukas Kisunas (10/7/17)
15. Elias Valtonen (10/10/17)
16. Ayo Dosunmu (10/10/17)
17. Talen Horton-Tucker (10/20/17)
18. Flo Thamba (12/14/17)
19. Samba Kane (3/9/18)
20. Tevian Jones (3/9/18)
21. Giorgi Bezhanishvili (3/25/18)
22. Alan Griffin (4/7/18)
23. Andres Feliz (4/8/18)
24. Bryce Golden (4/19/18)

Seeing that list makes me so sad. A combination of heartbreaking losses (Wilkes, Nolley, Castleton) and wasted OV's (Sou, Thamba, Kisunas) really hurt our flexibility down the stretch. Gotta save OV's for players we have a >50% chance of actually signing.

Or, you know, maybe they had more swings and misses than one might expect on average. It's really easy to sit there at your keyboard and talk about "well we shouldn't have wasted an OV on so-and-so who didn't commit, but at the time, when you are really trying to recruit that player, what else are you supposed to do? Too many recruits said no last year. Throw in the need to recruit more players than usual due to transfers and that's really the bottom line.

This sounds nice, but how do you actually evaluate if you have a greater than 50% chance of actually signing someone? The only way to measure that is if the recruit cuts the list to 2, and even that it's only 50% and not greater than 50%.

I have to break down the words “win” & “players” for some that will pick it a part.

It’s very simple formula

I know that until we win ( meaning BT titles or at least compete) we won’t get enough top players ( that means 3-4 top guys to compete for a championship)

😝

Hi everyone, first time poster but long time reader. I would like to preface that I am an Illinois alum but not from the state.

What I find interesting is the immediate negativity regarding everything. I understand when online any, and everything can turn into an echo chamber, however, the loss of perspective is a little upsetting.

I can understand how the turnover can be upsetting to some, but the team did only win 14 games with an entire new system, a coaching staff learning to work together for the first time, and behind the scene issues we were not privy to.

It is easy to go "woe is me" but Coach Underwood has said for years how his dream job is Illinois. His system and principles have been adopted across the country. He has also won everywhere and been praised form the likes of Frank Martin and Bob Huggins.

Recruiting in the long run net in more losses than wins, but that is the nature of the beast. I believe that Coach Underwood prioritizing athletes who are versatile, and putting a premium on longer guards who can shoot will pay off. For example, Jalen Lecque is a top 10 player in the class of '19, but he couldn't even shoot 20% in Peach Jam. Sure the staff offered off his athleticism, but I imagine the staff would rather have a lesser rated player who can be molded, let's not discredit the development aspect of the program, which after year one has not had enough time to be evident.

So I guess to wrap this up I understand the frustration, being irrelevant isn't fun. But we have the staff and already some players in place after one year who are determined to, and I frankly believe, will cause Illinois to rise again. Come on everyone, we are 0-0 right now, let's keep things upbeat right now.

I continued to search the Internet for more clarification about the 24 official visits in a rolling two year period and I found a Power Point presentation that had a slide showing examples of this rolling two year period for the 24 official visits and here's that slide.

Here's the link to that Power Point presentation and this slide is number 9 of 39 slides:
https://www.ncaa.org/.../DI_Recruiting_Official_Unofficial_Visits-SEMINAR _06302016.pptx

I still find the information on this slide to be lacking in detail about how the number of official visits remaining are calculated.

This slide shows that there were 22 official visits in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 time period but it doesn't tell how the 22 official visits total came about.

Since (in a perfect world) you are only trying to bring in 3-4 players a year, with 12 officials per year, I would think a 30% chance is fair. Unless, you squirrel them away for years like this past one.

We have 9 visits available this next year.

And this is in direct opposition to what BmoorIllini was stating. Thus, my confusion. One minute it looks like lump sum and next it looks like rolling.

Yip. Clear as mud. o_O

So we may or may not be getting some official visits back on Aug 1st? It may just be 1 OV at at a time returning starting later in Aug? Or it could have something to do with NLI day ??? Grrrr

I think we now have an excellent coaching staff; the best since the Self. Eventually, that will pay dividends.

But after just one mediocre year and a tumultuous off-season, I think it is wildly -- WILDLY -- optimistic to think that Champaign is an attractive destination to any Top 25 (or even Top 50) player other than those who consider Illinois their "dream school" or have a strong personal connection to a staffer (Ayo/Chin).

I think it will take a few years of gradual development to get back to relevance. To land a top, top guy, Underwood would need to hire his dad/uncle as an assistant (which I appropriately think he is not in the habit of doing).

Yep, we have to remember that 2005 was 13 years ago....an 18 year old would have been 5. Although that seems like yesterday to some of us it was a long time and a lot more hair ago(for me anyway). Most of these kids haven't seen us as a relevant program.
