Can't have too many wings. ie, Flyin Illini, and this years Olympic team.
That's not entirely true. In certain situations with the right personnel, it works. In others, it doesn't. If you're going to be a wing-heavy team, you need guys that can handle the ball, pass, shoot, rebound, and defend multiple positions. The Flyin' Illini team was great because of their defensive energy, quickness, and versatility.

As far as I have heard Goodwin hasn't set up any visits yet but have to think it will be soon as most everyone else is doing so. Look for September 9-11 as a possible weekend for a visit to Champaign with the Night time atmosphere the football game should bring in.

Gotta believe that's what the staff is pushing for. Hopefully it happens.

A poster seemingly with some intricate knowledge of the situation implied yesterday that Goodwin may not set up any OV's.

I'm not saying the no official visits info is wrong, I have no idea, but it doesn't seem to line up with the "show me the love" personality that we've been fed from those around JGood.

2 more flipped their CB to SLU. That makes 3. Waiting to see what the big dogs do.

Whatever SLU offered him has his immediate ear. In Whitman I trust.

They must be reading the Illinois fan boards.

I don't care what sport you're being recruited for, I strongly believe in that taking OV's gives you an in-depth personal perspective of the staff, facilities, campus, and even the players.

You can do the reasearch all you want on the Internet, but at the end of the day, it doesn't compare to going to a school in person to learn more about them academically and athletically.

If I was Goodwin, I wouldn't go into it blind. I'd be setting up OV's of my top schools.

just need LuckyLeft to come in and completely burst our bubble and say Goodwin to SLU is happening :(.. Stu has been right on lately so I have no reason to doubt him

Later in this video, Verge dribbles the ball off his defender's face. I don't think I'm not a fan of someone who would intentionally hit someone in the face with a basketball, even if it wasn't all that hard.

Oh come on, it's an old Globetrotter trick. The guy he hit was Ayo who didn't seem too upset, after all his grandfather has a team called the Harlem Ambassadors, Nojel Eastern loved it - he was the guy who is jumping around in the foreground and runs over to high five Alonzo afterwards, the crowd loved it since it was the ChiLeague Classic and street ball and entertainment are the main interest. And I thought it was pretty funny. It's done on playgrounds all the time.
Jeebus. Besides, "I don't I'm not a fan" means you are a fan. So I'm a bit confused.

Stu may be close to Jgood's party but he may be passing info that they want to be passed.

How does picking a smaller school cause him to lose all his winning traits? If anything, playing at SLU could strengthen those traits because he would truly have to carry them in order to have any success.

There is no way to know what Goodwin's perspective is. Of course we think picking Illinois over SLU is easy...because we are ILLINI FANS. Goodwin's decision is probably much tougher than we think it should be.

Unless there are extenuating circumstances (family, etc.) I equate picking a smaller school as backing down from challenge and competition. I would rather he pick Alabama or Mizzou than SLU and even that would be a stretch.

This is turning into a curious recruitment (aren't they all?) to say the least. We've got a player who fans and media are obsessed with because he does whatever it takes to win (a trait that somehow seems to have become underrated in this day and age) with a lower ranking and even lower quality of schools recruiting him.

We NEED to get Goodwin here for an official or he's gone for sure IMO.
Nothing to lose at this point to push for one.

"IF" he wants to hone his point guard skills, I say we bring him in as a PG WIP and give it a try. If he can actually become an NBA level point then we win, and if he can't (likely) then we play him as needed and we still win. A 2-3 guard with some PG skills isn't a bad thing. If the aggressive dream is to give point a shot, why not let him try it here rather than SLU?

Well, Goodwin retweeted this yesterday so maybe Avery Johnson will swoop in and take JGood from Travis who swooped in and ... whatever. Avery gets all 5 of those guys and he will have a Fab Five.

Why give up just because we are no longer the favorite?
If he's as important as people around here seem to think, then we don't give up. We are effectively the blueblood here, and we need to act like it IMO.

Sure. Damage control and reassurance that Groce is on reasonably solid ground. Both sorely needed at the time. Now, not so much.

This is exactly correct. No basketball recruit is committing to a school because of the AD (or football coach). The amount of contact they will have with the AD is minuscule compared to the basketball coaches. I suspect this is just a way for anti-Grocers to hedge their bets in case he turns this around.

I agree with this and for the record I 100% believe he's coming here given our competitors. It seems the staff has made him a priority and that's good enough for me.

This is what I've been thinking since this brouhaha started. Is there a better way to create interest and stir the pot? I think not.

Verge is definitely talented. Reminds me a bit of Boatright who played for UConn.

Boat played his hs ball at East Aurora and I saw him maybe 30 - 40 times during his soph to senior year. They do have a lot in common skills-wise, but also have that swag that whenever they get the ball in their hands you are glued to see what they do.

I like it because I've watched high school basketball since I was a kid in the late 50s and there aren't that many kids that are totally electric with the ball in their hands. Battle was, Boat was and Verge is. I'd love to see him at Illinois but doubt it's going to happen. This will make 4 high schools and he doesn't strike me as a kid who worried about academics very much early on in high school. Marcus Lovett all over again. But I'll still pull silently that it'll happen even if most of the board/fans think he's 'bad' for whatever reason. You just don't see a kid who can move and make passes like that come around too often.

So his academics and behavioral issues make him a pipe dream?

I don't know that he still has behavioral issues, I'd like to think that was all about being a dumb sophomore. MOB and Henricksen both seemed to think it was. But the academics thing -- a kid with that talent only getting offers from IL, DePaul and Providence -- it's so much like we were all wondering about Lovett how he could be so good and have only 3 or 4 offers, that I'd be willing to bet he's going to have problems getting cleared. But Jaquan Lyle, Lovett and Pipkins all had that problem and they are or will be playing so maybe. Here's hoping anyway (for me at least.) He's got all the skills a pg needs, give him some mentoring with Dee and make sure his head is on straight and you'll have a superb pg.
