I bet the Saint Louis U fans are excited and all talking about it...actually, I doubt seriously that hardly any of them know they are in the mix for him.

This is the only St. Louis board I've looked at but they've gone from cautiously optimistic to kind of cocky. Although only 110 posts so far. The first post also quotes from the original Scout article that started everything.

(And for those of you who don't regularly read other message boards, please don't respond to the Groce and Illini bashing. We do it, they do it, all boards do it but you don't want to look like that goofball from Temple who used to come on here back in Brunson's recruitment do you?)

I know OWWdig's source on Smith is much better than mine and Odig has not felt good about recruitment, but I counted 8-9 times that staff was at MIF games scouting Smith plus his being on campus 3 times in last 14 months. His parents are supposedly active in the alumni association and they like the idea of him being close for them to see his games.
I just can't give up on Smith he's too good of talent plus he 's one of those recruits that are climbing the rankings rather than falling.
Plus he carries that term versatile that Groce likes.
It also probably didn't hurt that Da'monte Williams was also on the 17U team and that we probably want to stay in good graces with the Irvins given how much outstanding talent is currently on the MIF 16U and 15U teams, including a certain Morgan Park PG.

Players might be waiting for things to shake out before they commit. Why commit to a school if you think they are still going after a couple other players in your position.

At the SG/Wing position we are pretty solid. Not landing a recruit at this position will not derail us. Look at Kippers and DJs measurable, both have NBA type length. Kipper I believe is the more talent BB player now, DJ has shown flashes of what can be his future.

What have you seen from Kipper that makes you think he is more talented right now? Sorry if this has already been discussed.

I was not knocking you in the least, please don't take offense. As you say, passing on what you hear, which I 100% believe. I think in this day and age it's very easy to get information put out there in a way that can rile any group up, especially us UI fans. Recruiting can be a chess match/mind game, and while I don't necessarily think its the kids themselves, surely there is someone in that camp wanting to stir the pot. Maybe they are looking for a way to get a couple teams higher up the ladder than Illinois to make offers? What better way then to throw a huge dose of doubt onto their relationship with the school that pretty much everyone had as a lock? Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't? Maybe it's all totally legit and SLU is a bonafide threat and has taken the lead. Who knows? I'd bet the people who know absolutely where Goodwin stands can be counted on one hand.

None taken. I don't think any of that is going on, but that is better to think about than the likely reality! I hope I got bad info, if so I'll be the first to eat crow!!

8/7/16, Meyer reaffirmed his pick of Goodwin to Illinois. Have things changed that much in 2 days? Is Meyer out of the loop on this one? Can message boards completely generate whatever they want? Guess we'll find out on 10/23!

Sorry, his pick is from 8/7/15

That's why he's the one to watch. Besides having more contacts than anybody else currently making picks on the CB, you get a gazillion points for picking a team first and for the length of time you've had them picked. Since somebody else already picked St. Louis first, he's not going to change his pick that's a year old unless he's absolutely sure about it. He won't pick St. Lou unless it's a done deal.

Stanford gets a commitment from Top 50 SF Kezie Okpaia. This pretty much rules out Smith to Stanford.

Are we sure Stanford can't take another wing? Same goes for the others schools like Xavier, Michigan, and Indiana. Because most schools can take multiple wings in a class. We are trying to get 3.

What psychological stage of grief am I in?
I think I am as hopeful as anyone on here of Goodwin committing to Illinois. I check this board daily for any Illini news. After all the grief of the last year it has been so nice to have an upswing of things to talk about. But now that there is a wrinkle in the Goodwin possibility I feel nothing. I guess I am in classic denial. But if the shoe dropped tomorrow, right now I feel like I would be "ok who's next".

Stanford already has 3 true SF's (Fresh & Soph) plus Okpaia who just committed and for 2017 that leaves only 1 spot open. I doubt they take Smith to make the 5th SF w/the remaining offer.

Lewis to ISU, official now.

Did he say anything about how he was disappointed to not get the opportunity to play @ the SFC, The B1G, and w/his friend TJL? He expressed during his UV what an honor that would be,
Oh well, his Mom didn't like Groce and he couldn't have gotten into Illinois. :D

Sounds like he's a high risk high reward kind of investment that we have to make.
I would love for us to make this investment. If we could do that along with Frazier and a PF target, I would be ecstatic. It would be a high risk/reward use of our last spot in a large class. Why not?

JS puts in work and his shooting form is so smooth...plus the athleticism. I love watching JS pregame/practice and go through the repetition of the shooting stroke. Wow.

I hope that we've turned things around this summer as TC notes, we have a lot in our favor here. In order for us to have gotten back into it, I figure Groce would have to have convinced the Smith camp of 3 things:
1) Team discipline issues were isolated and not a pattern. Those things have been taken care of for the future w/dismissal of certain parties and higher expectations/accountability. TBD.
2) Uptick of recruiting momentum - players to play with JS. CHECK.
3) Can Groce win? TBD.

1 & 3 are TBD and this will come down to how good of a salesman Groce is and how well he can convince the family that 1 & 3 will trend positively. #1 is big because even if the parents are involved in UI and alums, how many parents want their kid with pro hoops potential to become part of a team perceived as having disciplinary issues.

As I said, with school starting, hopefully more info starts surfacing. I will happily pass along anything I hear, but as with the JGood info being discussed, I suppose there's always a chance that info is misunderstood, exaggerated, simply incorrect, and/or purposely used to deflect truth or achieve other outcomes - so take it all with a grain of salt.
Fantastic share, thank you!

I have two eyes, when I saw Kipper walk by JCL and was a man vs a boy I knew we had a player. His videos showing him workout or shooting around are impressive. His measurables are only second to Hill and are better than Hill as a junior. He had a tremendous career in Ohio, similiar to what JG is having in Illinois. First team all-ohio as a junior and top player on top team. His ranking is a joke IMHO, he should of been top 100.
