Stanford gets a commitment from Top 50 SF Kezie Okpaia. This pretty much rules out Smith to Stanford.

Don't never not hit no one in the head with no ball not unintentionally.

Haha, I started to type "I'm not a fan" then decided to change it to "I don't think I'm a fan" but just messed up the edit...

I don't know that he still has behavioral issues, I'd like to think that was all about being a dumb sophomore. MOB and Henricksen both seemed to think it was. But the academics thing -- a kid with that talent only getting offers from IL, DePaul and Providence -- it's so much like we were all wondering about Lovett how he could be so good and have only 3 or 4 offers, that I'd be willing to bet he's going to have problems getting cleared. But Jaquan Lyle, Lovett and Pipkins all had that problem and they are or will be playing so maybe. Here's hoping anyway (for me at least.) He's got all the skills a pg needs, give him some mentoring with Dee and make sure his head is on straight and you'll have a superb pg.

Sounds like he's a high risk high reward kind of investment that we have to make.

Almost hard to believe what a U-turn this recruitment is, unbelievable...

So his top list:
Stanford - top 50 SF
Illinois - Goodwin is top target
Indiana - Wilkes is top target
Wisky - looks open for SF
Xavier - commitment from top 60 SF and top 200 SF
Mich - Going after Bowen, also has a local kid or two on their target list
Nova - Going after a couple top SF as well

His list is starting to dry up a bit, plenty of opportunity left but he could legit be a player for Illinois if we lose out on Goodwin and other schools take commitments.

I think he is down to 7, with rumors Stanford was hottest on his list?
Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Stanford, Villanova, Wisconsin and Xavier left. that could be big.

Stupid question maybe, but where are we with Smith right now?
Have not been following this kid.

Anyone not named MSU still seems like a long shot on Bowen, but Michigan also have Poole in 2017 as a wing.

At this point, JG may be our top target, but can't imagine we would say no to Smith, even before all the latest we have lost the lead conversation.

For whatever it's worth, there's a small thread on the Peegs board about whether they should slow play Justin Smith if he wants to commit. Small sample size, but the consensus seems to be no, take him. I know Indiana is a school he likes better than us -- but think Stanford, Villanova and Michigan are his top 3 just going by things I've heard and read in the past. But Stanford and 'Nova may have moved on. He doesn't have an offer from Michigan yet but probably will after his visit there.

I know OWWdig's source on Smith is much better than mine and Odig has not felt good about recruitment, but I counted 8-9 times that staff was at MIF games scouting Smith plus his being on campus 3 times in last 14 months. His parents are supposedly active in the alumni association and they like the idea of him being close for them to see his games.
I just can't give up on Smith he's too good of talent plus he 's one of those recruits that are climbing the rankings rather than falling.
Plus he carries that term versatile that Groce likes.

This is what I've been thinking since this brouhaha started. Is there a better way to create interest and stir the pot? I think not.

I think you all have severely overestimated my abilities!! Again, I pass on what I hear, choose to believe or not.

Don't forget that Michigan also recently got Matthews, who will just be a year ahead of Smith once he completes his redshirt year. That could be a reason why Michigan hasn't offered him yet. Then again, Smith seems very interested in Michigan as the upcoming visit will be with his mom, while his last visit was with his dad (parents are separated or divorced).

We don't know that. As it stands IU has 0 spots left. Now that will change w/potential pro for O.G. and Bryant and 'creaming" of Piller, but as it stands now they have 0 spots left for 2017.

Players might be waiting for things to shake out before they commit. Why commit to a school if you think they are still going after a couple other players in your position.

At the SG/Wing position we are pretty solid. Not landing a recruit at this position will not derail us. Look at Kippers and DJs measurable, both have NBA type length. Kipper I believe is the more talent BB player now, DJ has shown flashes of what can be his future.

Lefty should be able to respond on this UM situation fairly quickly. After UM took SF Livers commitment, they also are at 0 2017 spots left.

JS puts in work and his shooting form is so smooth...plus the athleticism. I love watching JS pregame/practice and go through the repetition of the shooting stroke. Wow.

I hope that we've turned things around this summer as TC notes, we have a lot in our favor here. In order for us to have gotten back into it, I figure Groce would have to have convinced the Smith camp of 3 things:
1) Team discipline issues were isolated and not a pattern. Those things have been taken care of for the future w/dismissal of certain parties and higher expectations/accountability. TBD.
2) Uptick of recruiting momentum - players to play with JS. CHECK.
3) Can Groce win? TBD.

1 & 3 are TBD and this will come down to how good of a salesman Groce is and how well he can convince the family that 1 & 3 will trend positively. #1 is big because even if the parents are involved in UI and alums, how many parents want their kid with pro hoops potential to become part of a team perceived as having disciplinary issues.

As I said, with school starting, hopefully more info starts surfacing. I will happily pass along anything I hear, but as with the JGood info being discussed, I suppose there's always a chance that info is misunderstood, exaggerated, simply incorrect, and/or purposely used to deflect truth or achieve other outcomes - so take it all with a grain of salt.

I was not knocking you in the least, please don't take offense. As you say, passing on what you hear, which I 100% believe. I think in this day and age it's very easy to get information put out there in a way that can rile any group up, especially us UI fans. Recruiting can be a chess match/mind game, and while I don't necessarily think its the kids themselves, surely there is someone in that camp wanting to stir the pot. Maybe they are looking for a way to get a couple teams higher up the ladder than Illinois to make offers? What better way then to throw a huge dose of doubt onto their relationship with the school that pretty much everyone had as a lock? Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't? Maybe it's all totally legit and SLU is a bonafide threat and has taken the lead. Who knows? I'd bet the people who know absolutely where Goodwin stands can be counted on one hand.
