18 IL WING Talen Horton-Tucker talks “Dream” Michigan State offer, a timeline for a decision & plenty more $

It's a pay article, but interesting that Hondo/THT describes it as a dream offer. And maybe Hondo can work his reverse magic again. If I recall, a lot of MSU fans were convinced Mark Smith dropped Sparty from his final list because Hondo creeped him out. At any rate, seeing this can't make NW very confident and as others have said -- if he isn't coming here, just don't let it be NW or Miznoz.

I remember at this point last year when we thought Minny would finish 13th in conference. Good times, good times.

Pitino is doing it with in-state talent, so kudos to him. If BU can do the same and keep the best Illinois BB talent in-state, then I like our chances!

Seriously. Hopefully a really good job comes open that gets baby Pitino out of the B1G

Not doubting you on this info, but seems contradictory to getting MSU involved. Hard to believe Izzo will promise him being "the man."

Ahhh, recruiting ;)
You got it. May be just tired of Ayo. The only school that promises something along those lines of being "the man" would be Mizzou if Porter left and THT isn't that type of scorer.

good thinking, THT. head to MSU, i'm sure there won't be any other solid players there and you can be the man from day one.:thumb:

on't be the man at all but he described the MSU offer as a "dream offer". Like I said, he is not the type of scorer or game changer to be the man. He wont even be the man at Simeon next year.

Good handles, good vision, pretty good hops, good mechanics on his shot, looks to attack the rim. Seems just the kind of player we want, do it all kinda guy.

Hinton seems much better than a 3 star. Plays defense, passes, shoots and has handles and size. What am I missing? Do we have a legit chance?

He's got no problem with Ayo. They've known each other for 10 years. And if there really is a rumor on the street that he wants to be the man I can pretty much guess who started it. His entire style of play belies that idea. He wants to win, not be a star. He'd be the man on 95% of the teams in Chicago, but he picked Simeon which is known to be team-oriented. He wouldn't have joined MIF if he wanted to be the man.
(The person I talked to about it said only the Irvins were ticked, nothing about why he left.)
Anyway, NY2LA Summer Jam starts today and runs all weekend. MIF, CIA Bounce and about 60 other teams will be playing. No online streaming so will probably have to follow UIHoopsRecruits twitter feed for updates on Ayo, Whitney, Pearson, Brazdeikas etc.

Good point. It would seem only a non-elite program would try to sell something like that to a top 10 kind of player. Even then, you would think a Top 10 guy would still want some quality help out there, otherwise they may end up like Ben Simmons or Markelle Fultz, being the man on mediocre teams.

For instance, if you look at last year's Final 4 teams, only one of them arguably featured one guy as the man. Oregon had Dillon, Brooks, and Bell. UNC had Berry, Jackson, Hicks, and Meeks. The Zags had Williams-Goss, Karnowski, Collins. The only one that seemed to be really weighted towards one player was USC with Thornwell, who seemed to be the primary guy there.

Same with the 2016 F4 teams, as Oklahoma's Buddy Hield seemed to be clearly the man for that team, while the remaining teams (Villanova, Syracuse, and UNC) were more balanced.

Quite frankly, I was a bit surprised that there were even "one-man" type teams that had qualified for the F4. I had thought I'd have to go back to Danny Manning and Carmelo to find teams like that. But as others have more succinctly pointed out, Izzo doesn't do one-man teams, even for Top 10 guys let alone a borderline Top 100.

I thought there was a difference between being "the guy" at a school and being a one-man team...?

UConn won it with Shabazz Napier. The other players cannot even take that team into NCAA.

Like Ryan Boatright and DeAndre Daniels? they both averaged double figures that season.

Fire opens Summer Jam play tonight at 7:10 at Homestead High School in Mequon vs MBA Elite from Mississippi. I wondered when I first saw the schedule if that was DJ Stewart's team which would make it an interesting game for anyone who lived close by but in reading the preview, it doesn't appear to be.
Mac Irvin Fire EYBL vs. MBA Hoops Elite – 7:10 PM – Court 2 – Homestead HS
One of the best guards in the country, Ayo Dosunmu, takes the floor for Mac Irvin Fire. The top 50 prospect was one of the most productive players in the EYBL this season. Also keep an eye on rising big man Tamell Pearson, who’s picked up some high major offers this summer. 2018 PG Daquan Smith guides the MBA Hoops Elite attack and leading a big, athletic front court, Kenneth Nwuba will look to give MBA Hoops a big win on opening night.

Although Deron ended up being the better player, Dee Brown was Self's prize recruit. He was rated nationally ˜18 while Deron was rated ˜50.

And Deron was plan B. IIRC, I think Sean Dockery was the first choice for point, but he went to Duke.

Self also passe on Iguodala in that class as well.

Self got some great recruits, but he also whiffed on his share as well here at UofI.

While we're rehashing, ...

It should also be noted that we were Deron's plan B, at best, and probably his plan C. Things really worked out well there!

Yes, Self missed on lots of kids. But his quote on recruiting rings as true as any I've heard: something akin to "If you're not hearing no often, you're recruiting the wrong guys."
