Over the course of our long basketball history, 80+% of our roster has hailed from the state of Illinois Among all of those teams, our best seasons have come when we locked down our own state by consistently securing 3 or 4 of the top in-state players each year (1980's, 1990's, 2000's). While I certainly welcome players like Stewart, I think the proven formula is to "take all the best players from Illinois, and never look back." Don't let Indiana, Purdue, Kansas, Kentucky or Duke take our guys.

Pepper in a Deron Williams when the opportunity arises.

Or NU....Depaul....Miznoz....

it takes about as long to drive to Evanston as it does to Champaign from Chicago anymore :)

Ha ha, I actually looked this up before reading this or other replies :D

Per maps on my phone, Simeon to Champaign is 128 miles, two hours. Usually less time depending on how fast you drive ;) worst traffic is usually done by the tie. You get on I-90/94 then I-57.

Simeon to NU, 25 miles, 57 minutes. Probably more time, depending on traffic.

Of course NU is closer, but to be honest, UI might be an easier, albeit slightly longer drive.

As it relates to recruiting, we are probably overblowing the issue. Difference is negligible enough to not matter.

Now back to our regularly scheduled recruitng talk. :thumb:

I have been on the wanting THT more side for a long time, but really either one would be a very nice get. I have moved over to wanting Finke more only for the reason he was here with EJ on his visit and if He can help in any way land EJ it puts him above THT in my book. I still would be more then happy to land either or both though.

Extending your logic, doesn't THT help with Ayo?

Easier said than done. The best players from Illinois are often very highly ranked recruits, often top 25. So it is less of the desire to take them, and more the reality that they will often end up elsewhere.

THT lives in Uptown, which is a whole lot closer to Evanston than just about anywhere else in the city.

Peach Jam magazine came out last night. (PJ is next weekend.) Meanstreets, as of now, is only listing 8 players on the roster --no Horton-Tucker-- so still curious where he ends up playing. I've heard MS, Team Rose - I'm also personally guessing he could end up on Caron Butler (Adidas) because Messiah Jones has played with them all spring and they are besties. Be interesting to see which team and circuit he ends up with. If he ends up on a team with Lathan or Nance, we'll have our answer pretty early.

It's a much different world today with AAU ball being far more relevant to recruiting than HS ball, saturation of TV coverage and the influence of social media. State borders just don't mean as much as they used to.

Yup, THT's Mom lives about 15 minutes from Evanston campus. He has visited about 6 or 7 times. Werner is right on this one. NU.

I've been worried about NW ever since I found out how many times they had him there before we even noticed him. Still hoping Chin can pull it out but not optimistic.

Pretty big turnaround for Illinois/midwest hoops in a short period. Northwestern is now considered a a real threat, DePaul is getting guys, we had a complete overhaul, Illinois St. is coming off of a very successful year, Miznoz is stealing a bunch of the St.Louis area guys,Travis Ford is in the area, and not to mention Purdue is still getting theirs, Indiana has taken a step up with their new regime in most peoples minds, Iowa and Iowa St. are going to get some, Wisconsin is always there...It's a completely different game now than it has been.

All the more reason Illinois recruiting shouldn't focus solely on the state of Illinois. I feel the current staff is setup to succeed locally and nationally. I think Illinois will be fine. As Underwood has referred to in interviews, Illinois needs to get its swagger back.

W's come long before swagger.

Agreed, but having no swagger is a real problem as we've seen the last 10 years. Talk is cheap, so we'll see what happens the next couple seasons with Underwood. To get back to the late 90's/early 2000's and having a team carry themselves like those teams did would be fantastic. I feel the culture will change, hopefully it builds quickly like it did under Kruger and Self.

This. Kids just don't "stay home" as often as they used to. Top prospects generally have the whole country on their wish list, regardless of geography.

I could see a class of Ayo, Tim Finke, DJ Stewart, and Conditt. I think we will end up taking 4. I don't have any special insight, but each year there always seems to be someone transferring out.

I don't think so, I think AYO will go where ever he wants no matter who is or isn't there. Also THT left the fire so even if they were pals, must not be that close

Bummer, really want THT. Not that I wouldn't be happy with Finke but I see THT's versatility and makes me salivate as to how good he could be in Underwood's system.

This might be the most realistic Class here....not sure of the ###'s working but names seem to be reasonable and attainable:chief:

Surprised Colin Castleton hasn't been mentioned more. I'd take him over Conditt & Timme.
