We don't, but most people I think would expect us to oversign by one to take Ayo (+1 would be Pearson). And as always, there is always attrition

Probably because we've had attrition every year this century.

While you can't say 100% that we'll have 4 rides available, it's highly, highly likely.

But would it be highly likely to sign 4 in the early period when there are no signs that anyone would go for sure?

I would think only 3 would be signed in the fall, and the staff would build relationships with some players who are deferring to spring to sign. That would probably lead to a 4th (if needed) being a player who is not even on the current radar.

If the right four guys wanted to sign in the fall, they would sign them.

I can't remember the last year that there wasn't attrition.

Is it possible to revoke a scholarship from a previous coach/year. For example, if this year plays out poorly for one or two guys, can Underwood say "sorry buddy but after your play last year I don't think you are a scholarship player on this team next year." Basically forces the young man to transfer to a school where he can get a scholarship and opens up a spot for Underwood's guys?

The answer to that is: it depends. 100% guaranteed lock we'll take a commitment from Ayo immediately, even if we already have 3 2018 commits. After that it gets murky. But for a a guy like THT, I think we would. Maybe for other highly coveted wings (e.g., Nolley, Griffin) too. The problem with making a kid wait is you significantly increase the chance of losing him.

If we want to eat at the adult table and there are four who players that we want who want to sign then we sign them.

All scholarships are year to year regardless of a coaching change. It's just a bad look to not renew them without cause. The better way to handle it is to be honest with a player about his future role with the team and let him make the decision.

Cream puff did it at Indiana every year, even with his own players.

Sure, however it must be the RIGHT players. The current roster and situation is different than we have had recently. And no one is suggesting who gets creaned should no one wish to leave.

About a week ago, Illinois offered Nate Hinton, a 6'4" SG from NC. This shows how puzzling recruiting is. The kid has one offer from a weak NC school (UNC-Charlotte; he didn't even get offers from Winthrop or Davidson which are less than 30 minutes away from his HS), and yet he has FOUR offers from BIG schools (IL, IN, MN, MD). At the same time, 247 gives him a National Comp of 288. He gets virtually no discussion on this board, like it was a toss away offer. For me, his offer shows two things: (1) there's a lot going on below the surface we don't know about; and (2) rankings don't mean a lot this time of year.

Didn't he just get like 15-20 high major offers this month?

I think what we're seeing with these breakout prospects, and how offers pour in all at once, is a shift in the way coaches are scouting prospects. There's so much reliance now on grading prospects during these weekend AAU tournaments over the summer, and very little scouting that goes on during the high school season. Coaches are relying more than ever on being able to show up to big EYBL/Gauntlet/UAA events during a few weekends and see all the best kids in one spot. Given the strains on their time, it's understandable, but it also leads to kids being over/under-rated based on one or two weekend performances.

Actually the Big Ten went to 4 year scholarships some time ago. Having said that, it doesn't prevent a coach from having a frank discussion with a player about their future and that player deciding to move on. But "not renew without cause" isn't an option.

My mistake from the earlier post--Nate Hinton did have offers from Winthrop and Appalachian State. Add MI and Penn ST to his BIG offers--now up to SIX. He went to a small private church-sponsored high school his sophomore year then transferred to a small private school his junior year. That's one reason he's been under the radar. Here's an article from the Charlotte Observer from about a week ago. The offers that came in one week are amazing. Interesting article:

Kids that are talented, but buried in the rankings (primarily because of visibility), need 2 things: a breakout performance against top quality competition. Hinton, Hellums and Zion Griffin are perfect examples. Do that and it'll be raining offers.

Actually that does sound familiar now. Good catch.

What is to stop any kid from saying they just received an offer from (fill in the blank school)?

Schools/Coaches and refute it because you can't talk about specific recruits.

Am I missing something there?
