Our 2018 class should be (drumroll please)........Ayo, De Sousa, Ignas, and THT. Now staff, go make that happen and we should be good for a year.

I'd sure be happy with that class! Not counting on it, though it is fun speculate.:chief:

I said the other day that sometimes I just roll my eyes and let it go after reading some posts. There's a couple here today. (not exactly an eyeroll, but...)

+1

Would also like to see more respectful posts of the folks we're going after. Not to say that it needs to be all sunshine and roses, or you can't have personal preferences among recruits, just that sometimes the evaluations seem harsh or thoughtless of guys that aren't at the top of someone's wish list.

Well all the votes have been counted.......and checked by a reputable third party. Our 2018 class should be (drumroll please)........Ayo, De Sousa, Ignas, and THT. Now staff, go make that happen and we should be good for a year.

Great, but you forgot to add who gets creaned with a class of 4. ;)

Can BU recruit nationally in his first year? Absolutely. For recruits, he's not selling "Illinois" as much as he's selling himself, his values, his success, his staff, his system, playing time, the national stage of the BIG, then comes Illinois, the university, academics, graduation rates, facilities, the historical status of the program, etc. The emphasis may change for parents or from one player to another, but in the end, it's all interconnected, about creating a trusting relationship with the player and his family and providing a path to fulfill a dream. Every recruit understands the status of playing in the Big 10 whether they understand anything about Illinois. That opens a lot of doors nationally. AAU basketball and social media have transformed "recruiting geography." Players know each other from one end of the country to the other, they stay in touch, they get online followers, they get a chance to meet dozens of coaches who stand and watch a 16 year-old-player for an entire game, one day after another, to show some "love." Attention and "dream fulfillment" are more important than location.

Emerging big man Jaxson Hayes sets two visits, plans another

“This is my first year of AAU and I’ve picked up about 24 offers,” Hayes said.

Playing for 22 Vision in July, Hayes has emerged this summer as an intriguing post player. On Wednesday on the opening day of the adidas Summer Championship, Hayes impressed with his mobility, length and athleticism.

Just 17 years old, Hayes has been flying under the radar, but also he’s just now starting to mature. Hayes cites a growth spurt from 6-7 during last high school season to 6-10 this summer.

“I actually just hit a growth spurt and once I hit that growth spurt I thought people may start coming in, but not like these big ones,” Hayes said referring to the high major schools that have offered him recently.

What does he attribute the recent attention to?

“I’d probably say my athleticism and length,” Hayes said.

Ayo is good, but I don't see him replacing any those 3, anytime soon, maybe play along side, but not replace.
THT, and Ayo the staff needs to be on them, 24/7:thumb::illinois:

Like our guys a lot, but believe Ayo would have immediate impact with his size, quickness, and shooting ability. If not starter then starter minutes as he is capable in the position less system of guarding the 3.

EJ is only 16, if he grows another inch or two that'd be gravy. He'll be just fine playing(and defending) the 4 at the next level with his length & strength down low. That jump shot looks pretty, too. Undersized or not, he'll be a mismatch.

Hope EJ does not grow any more. Goes into a different level of recruit with some added height if he retains his skills.

Hahahahaha. Wait, are you serious? (seriously, I can't tell)

The bigger point I was making about Griffin, Hellems and Hinton is that even if we don't get Ayo or THT, we could still end up with a decent class. I haven't seen Griffin, other than highlights, but based on what I've read, and Henricksen's assessment, I'm impressed, as are a growing list of D1 coaches. I'll be surprised if BU doesn't offer him within the next week. Hinton has caught the wave and rivals THT for BIG offers. And Hellems isn't far behind THT or Hinton in offers. If we get two of those three guys (Griffin, Hinton, Hellems), and a big, and don't get either Ayo or THT, I would still feel good about this class. But as I said, at the moment, I think we land Ayo. It would be a coup to get Ayo and one of those three players.

Yeah, that's fair - I don't disagree with this post. I thought you were saying that if you had the option of a national top 25-30 recruit versus 2 of Griffin/Hellems/Hinton that you would go with the latter. Which is your opinion and fine, but it seems like there's a growing vocal minority on this board against Ayo, and I cannot for the life of me figure it out.

Illinois basketball fans are used to seeing our players, in most cases but not always, finish out their education staying the full 4 years. Ayo appears he will be a one-and-done, so does that have anything to do with the vocal minority you brought up? Also, anyone for extra credit, when's the last time Illinois had a one-and-done basketball player head off to the pros?

Since I'm not in the vocal minority, that seems like a question for them, not me. But if that is the reason that people are against Ayo, that seems terribly myopic to me. JMO.

Edit: Also, if the staff was able to successfully recruit 5 5* guys who all were good enough to be one and done, I would be ecstatic. I understand that I don't speak for everyone, but I'm of the opinion that more Illini in the NBA is a positive not a negative.

Liddell played against Jalen Smith last night and defended him well , in the paint. Now Smith ate him up on all his offense attempts. EJ is still a junior, think he is learning alot, he will be ready when he comes to:illinois:;):thumb:

I don't think Ayo is a one and done.

I believe answer to the trivia question is Jereme Richmond...one and done and "headed off to pros".

I second Illinitiger's guess of Jereme Richmond. He did head off to the pros. Just didn't quite make it. :(

The @HoopersBBall fall to EYBL PSA Cardinals. Zion Griffin drops 25 pts. Tyler Cochran 12 pts

The Southern Stampede that Griffin had 36 points against earlier today is also EYBL. SS is Jalen Lecque's team who we offered last week. PSA Cardinals are Cole Anthony's team. So he's putting up numbers against some pretty good teams.
