Mr. Smith fits into Underwood's offense......

You may not be a Smith fan but the Rest of the state thinks he's pretty good....

He might not be a game changer for the Illini but where ever he lands... He's going to help some program next season.......

incredibly well. He would be foolish not to give Illinois serious consideration. With his driving ability, and his ability to knock down shots, he could put up serious numbers in this offense and in this style of play. If he wants to play in the NBA, Underwood's style will showcase his skills incredibly well.

Maybe a certain VCU recruit re opens his recruitment Mayan Kir? Or Latravian Glover 4 star at Okie, Justin Smith Indy?, interestingly, for state player of the year, Bruninga got more votes than several past recruiting targets, current signee's or future recruits, not sure why some think the kid can't play at Illinois?

Who were the 78(out of 139) idiots voting that didn't have Mark Smith either 1-2-3 on their ballots.

absolutely, and I would expect it also if he does

I would love to hear an example of a time where a recruit was blocked from choosing a different school. T

This is not a transfer, this is letting someone out of a LOI.

Jarrod Uthoff was blocked by Bo Ryan when he wanted out of his letter of intent to go to Iowa. He had to sit out a year and pay his own way that year.

Seeing Justin Smith on the list. Did his rankings drop?

Not sure about his ranking (and not very concerned about it either). He didn't have a great senior season. At the high school level he's been fairly consistent. He has all the tools to be a great college players. He's a fantastic athlete and capable shooter.

Given his UI connections, I wouldn't be surprised if the new staff puts out feelers. I would be extremely surprised if he ends up anywhere but IU though.

Likely Chicago-area folks that never see downstate kids play. There's also a group of voters that votes nearly entirely on reputation. That's why Goodwin got so many votes, despite being out injured for half the season.

We also heard about Kiwan-ee Garris, and about how Illinois hasn't had a legit big man since Deon Thomas... :tsk:

Yeah.....I thought of a few big men who would like to voice their opinion on that comment...

Smith crystal ball

Just FYI, Mark Smith just picked up a crystal ball to Butler if that hasn't been said already.

I sure hope we get Mark Smith, if not it will be 7 years in a row with no Mr. BB to UI.

As a casual observer in the recruiting space, it seems like we often went up against certain schools for recruits during the Groce era. Some of that is geographic, some of that is competition for outstanding talent, but some of it I think was driven by the system we ran. For example, it always seemed odd to me that we found ourselves competing against Oregon for recruits. I don't know how much of that was skill set or system driven, but I am curious if our new system under BU will find us pitted against new schools for recruits. What do you guys think? What skills will we be looking for, and who do you think will be added to our list of recruiting nemeses?

The Oregon thing was largely the mythical "Canadian pipeline." Dustin Ford's relationships had us in the top 3-4 schools for every major Canadian prospect apart from Wiggins during the Groce tenure. However, we never landed any because Oregon, Gonzaga, and Syracuse had much stronger pipelines. And then the bluebloods (Kansas for Wiggins, Kentucky for Jamal Murray) have automatic pipelines to every region/AAU program/high school everywhere. It became clear after several misses that Ford was in just tight enough to get us a hat on the table as a courtesy. Not discounting that style of play was also a factor.

Do you have examples? Other than us both going hard after Dylan Ennis when he transferred, I don't remember many duels with the Duckies.

Generally speaking however, I think you'll find a slight correlation between shoe sponsors and teams competing for recruits.

Off the top of my head there was that kid from near Vancouver, Jermaine Haley, that we briefly pursued (yeah that infamous Canadian pipeline). I think there were more but I'm drawing a blank.

I had something special planned for my 1,000th post but oh well.

You see that every year. They usually get the winner right, but after that it can get pretty ridiculous. How does Bruninga make 27 ballots but Verge only 15, Gilyard and Williamson only 13, Ayo 7? O'Brien and Henricksen were joking about the Mr. Basketball voting just last week, trying to guess where guys would end up. You just have to realize it's not coaches but sportswriters doing the voting. And sports writers generally only see a small area of players over the year.

We're going to be very short on senior type leadership and he could be a coach on the floor to help the existing players unlearn the old system and learn the new system. Could be a very important cog in the wheel should be choose this option. Definitely worth looking into.

This is what I was thinking. He could help our team in many ways.
