He will be Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois. I think you might actually be a little down on him.

You may not be a Smith fan but the Rest of the state thinks he's pretty good....
He might not be a game changer for the Illini but where ever he lands... He's going to help some program next season.......

hope we keep Tilmon AND get Smith. would be awesome for the future of Illini bball.
absolutely, and I would expect it also if he does
Jarrod Uthoff was blocked by Bo Ryan when he wanted out of his letter of intent to go to Iowa. He had to sit out a year and pay his own way that year.I would love to hear an example of a time where a recruit was blocked from choosing a different school. T
This is not a transfer, this is letting someone out of a LOI.
Seeing Justin Smith on the list. Did his rankings drop?

Who were the 78(out of 139) idiots voting that didn't have Mark Smith either 1-2-3 on their ballots.
We also heard about Kiwan-ee Garris, and about how Illinois hasn't had a legit big man since Deon Thomas... :tsk:
Mark Smith named Mr. Basketball

Likely Chicago-area folks that never see downstate kids play. There's also a group of voters that votes nearly entirely on reputation. That's why Goodwin got so many votes, despite being out injured for half the season.
Just FYI, Mark Smith just picked up a crystal ball to Butler if that hasn't been said already.
As a casual observer in the recruiting space, it seems like we often went up against certain schools for recruits during the Groce era. Some of that is geographic, some of that is competition for outstanding talent, but some of it I think was driven by the system we ran. For example, it always seemed odd to me that we found ourselves competing against Oregon for recruits. I don't know how much of that was skill set or system driven, but I am curious if our new system under BU will find us pitted against new schools for recruits. What do you guys think? What skills will we be looking for, and who do you think will be added to our list of recruiting nemeses?

Do you have examples? Other than us both going hard after Dylan Ennis when he transferred, I don't remember many duels with the Duckies.
Generally speaking however, I think you'll find a slight correlation between shoe sponsors and teams competing for recruits.

We're going to be very short on senior type leadership and he could be a coach on the floor to help the existing players unlearn the old system and learn the new system. Could be a very important cog in the wheel should be choose this option. Definitely worth looking into.
We'll revisit this.
