Anyone we get >> Anyone we did not get

The IL truth!

In fairness, this is not unique to IL. Any passionate fanbase makes all of these same ridiculous mental leaps.

If we lose a recruit to Kermit "We will respect the flag" Davis at a school that gives no craps about basketball and has no history of basketball, I will be severely disappointed. I see no reason why we couldn't out-recruit him.

Its too easy to call any statement like this just sour grapes or hope. Sometimes its just looking at compares and in many compares, one of those guys wasn't in the picture when the other one was.

As I stated in another post, I am not able to see either in person - but just from video - i did not see any major difference. Are you saying there is a ridiculous difference between the two?

Haven't seen THT play enough, but wonder if he would of had similar struggles if not more than Mark Smith. Still think Mark's game/role would of continued to grow, likely not at his pace or expectations.

THT is a tweener at the next level, but so were many others who found a way.

THT is the real deal....I'm just hoping that we don't kick ourselves for letting him go in lieu of getting Ayo.

I like how Feliz looks in the video...kind of a ramped up TJL...more athletic and a better shot. However, I am not suggesting that I would like to replace TJL, I like him and hope this is just an "in case" situation.

Poor mans Juwan Evans? :chief:

I just get this feeling that THT is going to haunt the **** out of us. At least we probably won't have to play him outside of possibly next year's Maui invitational.

He just seems like the kind of guy who will take Iowa State to the NCAA tournament and put up 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists a game. The kind of well-rounded player that may not thrill NBA scouts, but gets it done on campus for 4 years.

Wow - interesting. So you see him as a first year impact player? I was thinking his size, and strength, while it works ok for HS (ala MS) may not translate as well to the next level. I am not disputing as I have not seen him in person - just thought he was like 6'5 and strong, but not super quick. My perception could be way off since when he was in the limelight of discussion here, it was early.

And if he was an Illini he would not be a starter until his junior or senior year if that. I remember Bryant Notree and Calvin Brock being all world until they put on the orange and blue and played their first game.

Or have the same quickness problem as Smith.

My 2 cents: THT is a flat out baller. Think he's going to be a dynamite college player. Wish he was playing for us. Think Mike the Elevator is still frosted over this. (Come back, Mike!)

This raises some interesting questions for the group-

(1) Have Illini recruits underperformed their rankings more than other teams’ recruits over the past 10+ years?

(2) If not, does that just mean that we fans have crazy perceptions and expectations and tend to wildly and unfairly inflate expectations of our players before they set foot on campus? (And so we tend to fixate on players when they don’t meet our unrealistic expectations)

(3) or, if our recruits have actually generally underperformed, is it because our staff has generally failed to develop and utilize players? Or staff brings in players who are overranked due to its inability to properly scout for itself? Or staff brings in players who have high rank but just don’t fit in system? (This was a Bruce Weber talking point)

Like if (insert highly ranked player who was a bust at Illinois) had gone to (other school), would they have lived up to expectations? If Shamet or Whitt had come here, would they have been as good?

I’d love for someone to take an actual look at the data on question 1. Think it would be interesting and informative.

Was just thinking that I hadn't seen Mike in here in a while. Always love his insights. That's a guy that follows HS hoops even closer than I do!

But yea... I have to assume that those downplaying the lose of THT are drinking the Kool-Aid. That one hurt. Kid has all the tools and would have fit perfectly here.

Anywho...... I do think Hinson would be a great get, but I'm guessing Jones and possibly a fifth year are higher on the priority list.

Totally different player than Mark Smith. A guy like THT doesn't need elite lateral quickness and athleticism to have a big impact. He is so much more skilled than Smith.

THT is light years ahead of where Calvin Brock was at the same stage. Brock was a great athlete, but pretty rough in many skill categories. THT is just the opposite -- far less athletic, but very skilled and versatile.

I did an analysis about a year ago (can't remember what thread) that showed B1G recruiting class rank vs B1G standings for various coaches in the league. It was pretty conclusive that we under-performed relative to our recruiting ranks. Now does that mean our recruits were overrated? Or that we didn't develop them properly? The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

Ok, I'm getting hammered on that post. I was in line at Au Bon Pain waiting for my breakfast sandwich when I sent that post from my phone! Food-related autocorrect issues were inevitable! :D

Given the way the season ended, Liddell is probably most deserving. THT had a stellar year on a great Simeon team and deserved to be ahead of Ayo given that he was hurt for a key stretch. Also, the fact that we didn't get Belleville West vs Simeon in the title game was a tragedy—would have been epic.

I take it you missed the Belleville West - Whitney Young game that went into overtime?

Thanks! I think there’s also questions about position balance. When you have a glut of highly ranked wings without a viable PG, for example, the highly ranked players may tend to underperform.

Certainly did not miss it. It was a good game, but Simeon was a better team than WY this year. I always root for the two best teams to play for a state title.

Andres Feliz season just ended. Southern Idaho defeated Northwest Florida State.

Feliz scored 28 points and had 11 rebounds.
