The big guy we desperately needed.

Burnett and TyTy are more wants than needs. Neither are worth getting upset over not getting
I disagree. We're losing a 1st team All American combo guard and potentially nothing from the post.

Neither Goode nor Melendez will provide any PG capabilities, TyTy and Burnett will. Plus every team needs stars. They both fit that mold more than any other recruit, especially TyTy.

You’re new here aren’t you?

quiet tim and eric GIF
Followed quietly way to long. A lot of great points brought forward thru many topics. But i don’t have to agree or believe everything ever written. Lived under 3 mikes to the stadium. Played golf next to the assembly hall. Probably watched 100 football and a few hundred basketball games. I’ve seen it all. It’s not easy being an Illini fan. But my parents moved here to go to school and started a family. The rest as they say is history.
you could say I’m a long suffering Illini fan.

Which of the usual suspects applies?

A. "We didn't want him anyway"
B. "_______ hired his dad/mom/brother/coach/girlfriend"
C. "He couldn't clear admissions"
D. "$omething $hady"
E. "We backed off because someone better is coming"
F. "Must mean Kofi is coming back"
G. "He liked the weather better there"
H. "Orlando Antigua is going to be the new coach there"
I. "All of the above"

If I had a pick of any of the potential options, I think Id choose Tre Mitchell. I’m not sure how involved we are and I’m sure it’s dependent on what Kofi does, but he’s a beast.

If I know one thing about Illinois recruiting, it's never count on a player coming here until he's signed and on campus. I can't count the number of times some completely random team has come in at the final hour and convinced a kid not to sign with us.

This happens to every school. We're not special. Just say you follow only Illinois recruiting

If they really did offer his high school coach a job, nothing you can do about that. Move on to the next one.

I feel like too many people are looking over this to spin their favorite loyalty cliches. If it ends up to be not true, feel free to throw those cliches around all you want. Call me an idiot if it makes you feel better.

However, if it is true, how many of you are willing to sacrifice OA, Chin, or Gentry right now?

Exactly.

Its just hilarious that if we aren't outrecruiting Kansas, Duke, UNC, Kentucky and so forth people on here panic. We have our trophy Bass(even though he is a 22)and another guy that is pretty Goode for 21. Tournament isn't even over so the transfer market isn't even officially open. Has coach been giddy because he knows Krutwig is gonna grad transfer here? Who knows but the staff has shown the ability to fill spots when least expected. Even if we miss on all 3 of mentioned in the past 3 pages we will be ok.

some of these kids just make bad decisions and don’t have the right people advising them. Really? You are going to sign at ASU because they are hiring your high school coach? Fine don’t come here then where we have proven to develop big men.

It's one of those situations where it's easy to poke holes in from an outside point of view. If you have a mentor who can join you on the path towards a desired career, why wouldn't you? You now have someone on the staff to advocate for you.

Transfer market is now up to 839 and climbing. A couple of interesting new ones, Miller Kopp (NW) and Jack Hoiberg (MSU) .

it’s a bad deal for that coach too no? He is going to get canned as soon as Enoch leaves ASU.

I think the natural bias and self confidence people have leads them to think they will last. A lot of these guys believe in themselves and see this as their chance to prove themselves.

Coach your kid, college experience on the resume (even albeit reverse(?) nepotism), more money, ego. Plenty of reasons it can make sense to them.

One thing I've learned over time, that most of you know as well, we're going to be fine - more than fine with hoops.

Recruits we think we're locks for are going to go elsewhere, recruits we are not expecting are going to come here.

That said, hopefully some day we can really start to get the key guys we want. There is no reason to lose kids to ASU, Auburn, etc. I know there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes, but we do need to figure out how to lock down kids that should be no brainers, like Burnett and Enoch.

I like to go back to rivals 150 list towards the end of the year and see how accurate their rankings actually were with upperclassman. I think most recruiting services do a pretty good job towards the top of the list. Looking at the class of 2018 they had Langford in their top 10 but more surprising of players they missed ranked was Duane Washington Jr at 146 and Ochai Agbaji at 145. Not sure if you had to go back in time which one of those players you rather have. There are a lot of players ranked in the top 100 who for whatever reason struggled at the college level.

I think this years recruits rankings are not going to be very good with limited High School and AAU ball due to COVID. This is the year you want a coaching staff that can identify talent and recruit the right player.
