Have heard that this is not the case at all, and he is still open. Right now I have heard that he is considering Illinois, Kansas, Mizzou, SLU, and UNC.

I think we should all know by now not to believe anything when it comes to the Tilmon recruitment

I thought KU was out of schollies with the addition of Charlie Moore.

He also reported that the younger Porter took his official visit to Mizzu last week, and that is either way wrong or a violation since he isn't a SR yet. After listening to him talk I still am sticking to JT being an Illini

Jontay is thinking about reclassifying so that must make it ok since he did take the visit. And yes Corey Evans did say IL was out on Smith and he may be just deducing on JT, but Cusumano is obviously hearing something similar according to his tweet from last night which was posted earlier.
Not sure what anyone has heard beyond message board "gurus" that would indicate JT to Illinois.

So in order listed:

Illinois - Could be the man, would start
Kansas - Worse than Bragg, wont develop will get recruited over..
Mizzou - Will be lost on a team that without Porter will flounder again
SLU - Would start, won't get any better, won't play with anyone better than Goodwin.
UNC - Will ride the bench for 3-4 years with minimal playing time..

Tilmon is NOT an elite talent, Kansas and UNC specifically will over recruit for his position and WILL get elite talent, he gets lost in the shuffle. Mizzou/SLU is crapshoots...Illinois still is his best option for PT/growth/consistency.

Ok but I mean this is a little overstated. There are some red flags with Tilmon perhaps but the tools are there. If he was really so crappy that he'll be this much of a failure everywhere else, how do you expect him to be "the man" here?

Mark Smith will be the man here.

I have heard that Jontay is definitely thinking about re-classifying. I have heard that if Jontay does re-classify then Tilmon will likely not go to Mizzou. Not enough touches to go around.

Can he take an official visit yet if he doesn't reclassify? Can juniors do that?

That was my thought too. Dissing one of our recruits in the same sentence you say he'll be the man here? :tsk:

If you follow this stuff, and obviously we do, it should be a wild ride until we sign another big.

I like it. They are all high quality. You don't beg anyone to come. This puts pressure on kids to take it or leave per-se.... "you are good enough to play for Illinois, but you're not special. Either take it or risk not having a spot". Smart move by the new regime

Glad I read back in the thread because this is almost word for word what I was thinking about posting this morning. I think this is definitely the strategy. I think this staff is much less concerned than the previous staff about some delicate flower getting his feelings hurt because someone else may be getting recruited as well. "You want a scholarship, here ya go but we're not gonna be held hostage for it. We have options."

They'll play the recruiting game for the top guys but they're gonna play it with a bigger stick than the previous staff.

This.

I swear it's not sour grapes, but I've just totally disinvested myself of that entire recruitment. It's not worth it.

It is also a much easier trip from Italy for his parents and for him to go home from time to time.

Really not that much difference in Milan to Chicago vs Milan to D.C in either time or fare. Dulles or Reagan are closer to Charlottesville than O'Hare to Champaign, but not that much. Of course even that difference will be negated once they complete the Peotone Int'l Airport:D

I find it entertaining that many on this board continue to discuss their recruitment of the East St. Louis big man when clearly our head coach has moved On… The only ones furthering the discussion on his recruitment are those on this board… Coach Underwood stated that the program was not going to beg for anyone to join them… Quite frankly I believe the recruitment in this case has reversed… If the East St. Louis big man wants to consider Illinois and wants to talk I am sure he has a phone number… Let's MoveOn… Plenty of other players we are offering which I believe will have a more positive effect on the program

Completely agree with you. I think the Tilmon discussion got started again after the Mark Smith comments.

I feel like I remember hearing this same thing said about our previous staff almost word for word. Hopefully this staff is able to execute better than the previous one but there are always those times of the year when offers are being made at a rapid pace (read: during AAU evaluation periods). Not sure these offers signal any titanic shift in thinking.

The opposite of seeming "too thirsty"; like it.

Makes sense. I'd love for us to get him (and I think IL is a great situation for him). But thinking w/o O&B blinders, it seems Missouri or someone else will in fact be his destination.

When do we think we will see the first commitment for 2018?
