First, I want to thank MTR and his quick updates over the weekend on our recruits. Anyone else concerned about THT and fouls? He seemed to be in foul trouble every game. Not being able to watch or willing to pay to watch, is it a control issue. Seemed to be offensive fouls quite a bit.

He's very aggressive, sometimes too aggressive, especially on drives to the basket. He was in foul trouble a lot - and even mentioned that in a short interview I saw somewhere but can't find now -- think it was with one of the Champaign guys. In fact in at least two games he sat out most of the first half due to fouls and he always seems to be playing with 4 in the final minutes -- if he doesn't foul out. A lot of them are charges -- he's great at drives and dishes but sometimes, he's just out of control. He knows it and said he's working on it. Nick and Mike have given him an earful every time he has to sit after charges -- and I'm sure Smith did during the hs season. Definitely think it's something that can be diminished. In some ways he's a lot like Black -- very intense and aggressive. Just have to get him to dial back a tad. Better than having to constantly getting on him to rev up a slow motor.

Running out of time and options to get a big for 17-18 season. We will struggle if only have Black and Finke. What potential options are still out there?

Yeah I saw the interview as well , and I believe he was asked what he needed to work on and he said fouling to much. The kid is for sure one who you will never have to ask to play harder. If some how he could have a growth spurt and get to about 6-7 or 6-8 he would fit more how he likes to play seems like to me.

One thing i have learned about recruiting is to never try to decipher a recruit's interview. JCL interview a few years back is a perfect example.

Actually that was the perfect example for JCL... he was beaming about Groce and Illinois but everyone thought he was going elsewhere.

I think with this new staff we as Illini fans should feel more at ease that they will field a team that will make us all proud. We may be undersized this next year but this doesn't mean the team wont be much improved over the previous last few seasons teams. I as one feel like we have great leadership from the AD on down. These next few seasons should be a fun ride seeing the teams develop with the new players that coach Underwood and staff recruit. This is along time coming and our fan base is beyond starvation for a winner and I truly believe its coming sooner rather than later. Go Illini

Must. Get. Tilmon.

I don't think thats true. Underwood has played small by necessity a lot in the past. All they really MUST get is a big body to eat some minutes and fouls defending the 5. He doesn't have to be particularly skilled. There should be more guys like this on the transfer market. I have no idea what Tilmon will do but putting all our eggs in that basket seems like a recipe for bunch of broken eggs.

Just a couple of reminders for the board:

1) Jeremiah Tilmon is going to be a Tiger.
2) The Braggin' Rights game is going to be absolutely lit this year.

+1. What does it take to sign a big?? We have playing time galore to sell. Sheesh

Not much out there right now. Waiting for a couple of fifth year guys to declare they are transferring. Example would be the center from NIU. He has not made the call yet.

We. Have. To. Let. Him. Go. Unless you know something otherwise (which obviously is very possible)

If that's a "must" then we are in trouble. It's like needing to pay your mortgage and saying you "must" win the lottery. Could it happen? Sure. Shall we pin our hopes on that or even really spend much time considering it? Nope.

Fair.

But it's still possible and would be big as long as he could keep his head on straight. Would bridge the gap to 2018 at the very least.

I personally am not expecting much this coming year with the roster that was left for Underwood. What I am hoping for is a better blueprint than the last staff to build something sustainable through the high school ranks. Most bigs are going to take a couple years to reach their potential at this level. I wouldn't mind a 5th year player early on to fill a gap, but my focus is more long-term and building a foundation. For me personally, I would like to see our guys get better and play smarter next year, but our position balance (most notably a lack of bigs) may not be there for a couple years. If Underwood can turn it around sooner that would be great, but I'm going to have a little patience.
