Perhaps I used poor examples. I was google lazy. My intention was not to compare us to these schools. My point was simply that hand wringing over losing in state talent is over stated.

After exhaustive research lasting nearly 4 minutes, I have discovered that the B1G average is 5 players from the schools home state per roster.
Please don't check my math. I'm using public school math! :D

Obviously not Common Core or the answer could be anywhere from 37 to Potato.

New CB to Illinois for Braun this morning. It's VIP but it looks like the LSU guy switched his pick.

I've been busy, so I haven't been paying attention to this board recently. Can someone fill me in on Parker Braun? Looks like he isn't very highly ranked, but his offer list isn't too bad.

Has it been mentioned, yet, that Parker Braun attends the same high school as Clayton Custer and Ben Richardson from Loyola?

The point is that perhaps our frontcourt play will come together enough to make Ayo's marginal value greater than the hypothetical marginal value of an additional solid big.

The big has 3 objectives this year, protect the rim and defense good, handle ball on passes and pass back fast, control the rebound and outlet.

Agree with your assessment, bigs will become better because of Ayo' s efforts, they need to be in position to support our guards, defend and rebound, handle ball , avoid turnovers . They do this a 2 star big will look like a 4 star every day.

From Braun's highlights, it looks like he can play.

Definitely shows potential. If he blossoms, could be a Roby-like (Nebraska) player (impact wise, not physical attributes wise). Unsung thin big who gets into P5 program and starts to shine in year 2.

Like that he was a guard until his late growth spurt. Love that he's coming from a great HS program. Can shoot it, pass it, handle it and has some athleticism. Could be our stretch 4 answer (down the road). Reminds me of unsung Wisky kids who end up killing us.

Between 6-8 and 6-9, pretty thin. Athletic. Likes to dunk. Good shot blocker, has long arms and has good timing when going up for blocks. Shooting is coming around.. something he's been working on. Stretch 4 type player in college. Played with Mokan Elite on the AAU circuit (backed up Jontay Porter last summer I believe). Just started getting some nice offers this spring.

Well I definitely like to hear about the shot-blocking. Sounds like he might be a good late-bloomer candidate that could turn into a solid player down the line.

I wouldn't hate getting him.

Plus, from the highlights I did see, it looks like he would fulfill our man-bun quota.

Braun's game is similar to Golden's, but he isn't as physically developed at this stage. Both are face-up 4 types that can shoot it and finish around the rim. I think Golden would have given us something next season, whereas Braun is going to need time to put on weight.

Another developmental guy. I think at this point we're rounding these guys up with that hope that one or two pan out. Not much else you can do when you keep missing on your top targets.

Thanks!

From what I see there,

Pros:
Tremendous length. Very long arms, and uses them to play bigger than he looks.
Plays with aggression. On both ends, he wants to dunk it and block it. Has some swag to his game. Would be a temperamental fit.
Has the makings of a decent jump shot.

Cons:
Very thin. And with narrow shoulders and slender hips would have a limited ability to add bulk.
Just an okay athlete. Might get worse as we put weight on him.
Not much of a skill level. Just a pogo stick at this point.

Boy you wish you could take Giorgi's pros and Braun's pros and put them into the same person. But alas.

I think it comes down to the coach and to boosters. Boosters will help you land a great coach, although it's still a crap shoot that you find the best candidate the year you go shopping for one. There are some pretty bad ADs out there, so that's worth a mention too. Winning is the chicken and egg argument.

I don't think history has much to do with it anymore, although you can argue recent history affects the current fanbase and booster support.

The coach's impact is obviously the single biggest factor. Underwood has what it takes IMHO, but the next couple seasons will tell if that's the case. I think fans are eager to see us win, and there are a lot of folks who will come back once we have a decent product on the floor. It's kind of amazing to me we averaged over 12,000 last season while we struggled so badly, but maybe we had a bump from Underwood being a new coach.

There is no blue print and there really never was. It's begins and ends with a great coach and the allure/resources to get said great coach. The rest is just window dressing.

This is holds true for every program regardless of their status or past.
Look at Indiana (post Knight), UCLA (post Wooden), KU (Owens), UK (Tubby, Gillispie), UNC (Doherty) and I suspect Duke is going to regress once K retires no matter who they hire. The tradition* of the blue bloods is nice but what sets them apart is the resources and willingness of the school/boosters to keep hiring at any price until they get it right.

Saw him shoot with his left hand a couple of times.

I think calling him a highly skilled stretch 4 is accurate. He can shoot the 3's and has some elusiveness down low similar to Krutwig (Loyola). Seems to have long arms, short neck, and decent hops so he plays like a true big. Seems to be able to pass, shoot, dribble well for a big. Someone said timing is good, I agree. Just look at his alley oop slams in traffic, easier said and done even when you are 6-9.

Biggest knock is his weight, looks to be 205/210 lbs. Will need to put on 10 lbs/year to be more effective on the college ranks. Still have him as a better project than Finke, who I thought had a solid career at Illinois. But should of been a back-up to a true PF/C type.

With this being said still hard to project what type of college player he will be immediately and down the road. Much of it is mental, but he appears to be a high motor/aggressive player.

Might be 15-20 on the generous side.

That's not what I'm seeing in that video at all.

Krutwig has amazing sophistication and footwork in the post for a player his age. Similar to Ethan Happ. Braun is just a dunker. He threw up a few off-balance spinning layups in the video but those are going to be sent into the stands posthaste in the Big Ten.

Braun has an Arizona offer? Is that right?

If the Arizona fan boards know anything, it seems that he probably does have an offer but is a clear backup plan of some kind, but that was only like 5 minutes of Googling and exploring by me.
