Braun has an Arizona offer? Is that right?
There is a huge cloud of uncertainty hanging over Arizona right now that clearly affects their recruiting. Nothing with Braun, but Arizona is struggling and offers now are not what they used to be.

Obviously not Common Core or the answer could be anywhere from 37 to Potato.
That's not what I'm seeing in that video at all.
Krutwig has amazing sophistication and footwork in the post for a player his age. Similar to Ethan Happ. Braun is just a dunker. He threw up a few off-balance spinning layups in the video but those are going to be sent into the stands posthaste in the Big Ten.
Agree with S&C analysis:
Great length, very aggressive (quickly off feet), moderate footwork inside, will need to improve, lack of strength (every kid this age almost is), very good passer it seems (probably what BU likes the most), suspect Jumper, and needs to keep balls in play when blocking...knocked way to many unnecessary ones out of play (cool in HS I suppose).
At this point, I'll take any blocks we can get, even if they go out of bounds.

To me his passing looked suspect and his jumper looked pretty good? No?

I think it comes down to the coach and to boosters. Boosters will help you land a great coach, although it's still a crap shoot that you find the best candidate the year you go shopping for one. There are some pretty bad ADs out there, so that's worth a mention too. Winning is the chicken and egg argument.
I don't think history has much to do with it anymore, although you can argue recent history affects the current fanbase and booster support.
The coach's impact is obviously the single biggest factor. Underwood has what it takes IMHO, but the next couple seasons will tell if that's the case. I think fans are eager to see us win, and there are a lot of folks who will come back once we have a decent product on the floor. It's kind of amazing to me we averaged over 12,000 last season while we struggled so badly, but maybe we had a bump from Underwood being a new coach.
Calvin... in light of your idea that "The coach's impact is obviously the single biggest factor" are you aware of any ranking system that measures a coaches success against the composite ranking of his players.
It would take a herculean amount of data entry to accomplish, but given that this is the debate every day on the entire college sports internet, it's a little surprising that it hasn't been attempted in a more systematic way.
Interesting because I was actually happy with his jumper (if we are both going off the Hudl video). He probably can’t shoot it like AJ or Griffin, but he shot 43% from 3. He’s not a gunner who is going to run off of screens but I feel comfortable with him as a pick and pop type player.I was suspect of the jumper too. Not much lift and it take a long time to develop.
I heard that he is still in CU and was spotted downtown doing some shopping. Has to be some positive vibes going on there.Illini have picked up a CB for Braun - for those interested in click bait
That makes sense. Seems like it could level the recruiting playing field a bit...
No recruit in their right mind would take that as some scientific certainty, but it could certainly debunk some message board myths.

I am asking this because it seems to me that the "bluebloods" do much less with their ongoing cache of 5* players than teams with lower ranked players. Villanova and Butler come to mind as examples of this idea.
Or to posit the same question differently - if the Illini had three or four 5* on the same team would anything less than a national championship be acceptable?
While I generally agree with your POV. I'd be curious to know, did the KU, UK, Dukes, UNC's of the world become big time because they got lucky with some big time local talent, or was it because they started going 'national' rather then local in their searches?
Villanova would not be an example of a school that gets "lower ranked" players. They won this year with 5 and 4 star kids.

Jay Wright has won 2 National Championships in 15 years at Nova. Both were with Brunson starting, coincidence, I think not.
I agree Drew. Braun shot 78 % from 2 43 % from 3 Good handles and good footwork. He could develop into a very good college player.
Heh, I bet Brunson is kicking himself for not picking Illinois!
I could be way off on this but I have always considered Bill Self to be an elite recruiter and an average coach.
Obviously I haven't done the work so I'm just spitballing, but my guess would be the coach whose reputation would be enhanced the most out of anyone in the country from the sort of analysis we're talking about is Bill Self.
The consistency of his teams' excellence stands apart from absolutely everyone else. His teams' talent level, though very high, doesn't.
Kansas' Big 12 title streak defies belief.
(Of course, it all depends on how you want to define the "success" half of the metric. If winning Elite Eight games is weighted more heavily than conference championships, Self will suffer.)
