Braun has an Arizona offer? Is that right?

There is a huge cloud of uncertainty hanging over Arizona right now that clearly affects their recruiting. Nothing with Braun, but Arizona is struggling and offers now are not what they used to be.

I only watched about the first half of the highlights. Does it show him passing much? He threw away an outlet or two, but his ability to pass out of the pinch post would be necessary. Finishes strong and is aggressive with the blocks as well. Some of those blocks he came down on the player. Got away with it in HS, could add up to some fouls quickly in college.

Runs floor well, handles the ball decently. Decent shot.

Skinny, but I think he's heavier than 210. Could stand to put on some muscle.

That's not what I'm seeing in that video at all.

Krutwig has amazing sophistication and footwork in the post for a player his age. Similar to Ethan Happ. Braun is just a dunker. He threw up a few off-balance spinning layups in the video but those are going to be sent into the stands posthaste in the Big Ten.

My kingdom for just a dunker!

Agree with S&C analysis:

Great length, very aggressive (quickly off feet), moderate footwork inside, will need to improve, lack of strength (every kid this age almost is), very good passer it seems (probably what BU likes the most), suspect Jumper, and needs to keep balls in play when blocking...knocked way to many unnecessary ones out of play (cool in HS I suppose).

At this point, I'll take any blocks we can get, even if they go out of bounds.

To me his passing looked suspect and his jumper looked pretty good? No?

Well judging by their most recent class of recruits, they continue to do fine. I think there are a lot of people that don't honestly think anything is going to come of all of that.

Coach Rating System???

I think it comes down to the coach and to boosters. Boosters will help you land a great coach, although it's still a crap shoot that you find the best candidate the year you go shopping for one. There are some pretty bad ADs out there, so that's worth a mention too. Winning is the chicken and egg argument.

I don't think history has much to do with it anymore, although you can argue recent history affects the current fanbase and booster support.

The coach's impact is obviously the single biggest factor. Underwood has what it takes IMHO, but the next couple seasons will tell if that's the case. I think fans are eager to see us win, and there are a lot of folks who will come back once we have a decent product on the floor. It's kind of amazing to me we averaged over 12,000 last season while we struggled so badly, but maybe we had a bump from Underwood being a new coach.

Calvin... in light of your idea that "The coach's impact is obviously the single biggest factor" are you aware of any ranking system that measures a coaches success against the composite ranking of his players. I am asking this because it seems to me that the "bluebloods" do much less with their ongoing cache of 5* players than teams with lower ranked players. Villanova and Butler come to mind as examples of this idea.

Or to posit the same question differently - if the Illini had three or four 5* on the same team would anything less than a national championship be acceptable?

It would take a herculean amount of data entry to accomplish, but given that this is the debate every day on the entire college sports internet, it's a little surprising that it hasn't been attempted in a more systematic way.

That makes sense. Seems like it could level the recruiting playing field a bit...

I was suspect of the jumper too. Not much lift and it take a long time to develop.
Interesting because I was actually happy with his jumper (if we are both going off the Hudl video). He probably can’t shoot it like AJ or Griffin, but he shot 43% from 3. He’s not a gunner who is going to run off of screens but I feel comfortable with him as a pick and pop type player.
Illini have picked up a CB for Braun - for those interested in click bait
I heard that he is still in CU and was spotted downtown doing some shopping. Has to be some positive vibes going on there.

Piper just put up a CB for Braun to ILL. Piper is pretty reliable.

Here’s what I see in Braun: a big who can help Space the floor by shooting and passing. He can finish at the rim, and seems to enjoy it. Defensively aware, a rim defender. He’s got the intangibles BU wants, and his frame can add weight.

Being thin as a 17/18 year old is an easy fix, especially with a proven Adam Fletcher. Braun will be able to contribute and get a lot better at being a big as he puts on weight.

This will be a very good get for us.

No recruit in their right mind would take that as some scientific certainty, but it could certainly debunk some message board myths.

I agree, certainty is a myth, but I am thinking of the idea that many 5*s never reach potential in blueblood programs. I could be way off on this but I have always considered Bill Self to be an elite recruiter and an average coach.

Villanova would not be an example of a school that gets "lower ranked" players. They won this year with 5 and 4 star kids.

While I generally agree with your POV. I'd be curious to know, did the KU, UK, Dukes, UNC's of the world become big time because they got lucky with some big time local talent, or was it because they started going 'national' rather then local in their searches?

They became big time because they had really good coaches for many many years who could teach concepts and improve skills, AND who were able to recruit better and better players as they found success.

They werent all 4 and 5 star kids but they had a nice balance of elite talent and valuable veterans. That's going to win you more games than just highly ranked freshmen.

Right... what I am attempting to get at is that when non-blueblood schools (villanova) do well for years without the top-ranked players and then get a few elite players do they win at a higher level than the Dukes & Kentuckys who always have high level talent?

Jay Wright has won 2 National Championships in 15 years at Nova. Both were with Brunson starting, coincidence, I think not.

Heh, I bet Brunson is kicking himself for not picking Illinois!

I agree Drew. Braun shot 78 % from 2 43 % from 3 Good handles and good footwork. He could develop into a very good college player.

Yeah, I'm way more excited about him than most. Very good athlete and obviously rail thin. However, athleticism, reminds me of the way he runs the floor and twitch, of James Augustine. With limited weight, I don't think he will be ready year 1 like James, but by year 2, I think he can be a good contributor. Year 3, watch out. If we somehow get him, there is only one player in this class I have concerns about. However, pair him with athletes such as Tevian Jones (quick twitch athlete that can shoot), Ayo (good athlete that is skilled), Kane (very good athlete), Griffin (average athlete, but skilled, can shoot, high IQ), and Feliz (good pg that can create, play d, and good athlete). Giorgi is my only concern but seems to have a bball IQ and has some skill. I really like the rest of the class and if can add Braun, have a chance to be good in two years. Kipper is a very good athlete too. Starting to see a run on athleticism and skill now.

Obviously I haven't done the work so I'm just spitballing, but my guess would be the coach whose reputation would be enhanced the most out of anyone in the country from the sort of analysis we're talking about is Bill Self.

The consistency of his teams' excellence stands apart from absolutely everyone else. His teams' talent level, though very high, doesn't.

Kansas' Big 12 title streak defies belief.

(Of course, it all depends on how you want to define the "success" half of the metric. If winning Elite Eight games is weighted more heavily than conference championships, Self will suffer.)

You make good points on the Self resume... my bias is exposed. I am thinking elite eight & final four type stuff mostly.
