I don't want to take any credit for it, but I'm pretty sure I was the first one bringing up smith on here

It's not just Smith it's a disease with us as fans and yes I'm just as guilty as the next guy. The grass is always greener on the other side and it rarely is.

I hope in a few years I'm eating some crow but our rose color glasses are consistently overly rosy imo.

You realize that the majority of fanbase think like this, right?

Goodwin sets tourney scoring record, Mark Smith wins MVP. Tilmon and pickett also earn all tourney honors

Think it is safe to say that Smith deserves an offer.

One big difference between this years recruits vs past ones are that this years commits put up great numbers consistently. Damonte (before injury) was much improved and being very impactful. Tilmon, Frazier, and Pickett all producing well. Hopefully we can add Smith to this list.

There is just no way we don't offer him now.

Would Smith have interest in playing baseball at Illinois? The baseball team has been pretty solid the last several years.

Other than DJW, I don't recall this being an issue

Evidently he suffered some sort of injury (so illinois) that's preventing him from playing baseball, so I don't know if that's even an option.

I don't know how he doesn't get an offer after tonight. He will be a great guard in college. He can shoot from three, handle the rock, finish at the rim, and find the open guy. Most of us on the board (myself included) were all wanting Goodwin over the summer and were bummed when he went to slu. That may be a blessing in disguise at this point because Smith will be a better guard in my opinion at the next level than Goodwin. Smith has better handles and is a better pure shooter. He is also very strong and is a good athlete. Hope this kid wants to be an Illini because he should get an offer after that performance tonight.

I was thinking the same thing. He, Frazier and Tejon would be a nice stable of pgs

We will have alot of guards......

Lucas, Frasier, Williams, Pickett, Coleman-Lands, Jordan .....maybe Smith?? Now, possible someone leaves, redshirts, etc. But, I would think the plan is to go to more of a 3 guard look. Need to go out and find a few bigs that are athletic, defensive oriented players.

We will get points from our guards....need to get some bigs that can rebound and defend and run the court. No more 6'9 or 6'10 bigs that want to shoot from outside and not be physical.

Groce needs to find the right combo of players......and he needs to start with not being soft down low. We have enough perimeter guys now.

We've had a couple dating back to Weber (Shaw, Dmije, Head, Tate).

I mean under groce. Tate wasn't a stud recruit, more of a best availiable, so I don't think he should count, plus he played with Jabari and Nunn, so wasn't needed to score.

You're right about Shaw and head though, and like you said, Damonte was much more consistent before his injury, or we could say the same for him.

Villanova winning it all last year showed that it is possible to win a championship playing primarily guards. Getting guards that are multidimensional is huge in college. That is what excites me about recruits like Damonte Williams and Mark Smith. Strong guards that can do so many different things with their game. Rebound, defend, and score in many different ways. It was such a bummer that Damonte got injured because he was having a beast of a senior season.
