Graduated from Fenwick myself, it’s great to see them with some solid talent again

They've been solid for several years now. Scottie Lindsay at Northwestern and then Mike Smith was a really good HS player — now averaging 17 pts and 4 assists at Columbia. Seems like Rick Malnati is able to recruit good talent and coaches them up.

I agree with the assessment of not getting much from the Catholic League. I wanted Maggette, especially after he played St Rita and kicked my friend in the mouth on a dunk. I also liked Charles Matthews. He was ranked higher, was more aggressive and a better fit, but DJ Williams committed first.

Would you mind sharing who your friend was who took that dunk from Maggette? I was texting with a friend after your post, and we can't remember who it was that was on the wrong end of that dunk. I can probably figure it out from initials if you don't want to put his name out there.

Not sure if it's been posted previously, but didn't see it. Another good group of Illinois HS games this weekend at UIC if anyone is in the area.

This has been a marquee event for a few years now. Saw Jayson Tatum up close a couple seasons back (he was unreal). A few good ones this year:

OPRF vs Fenwick - DJ Steward in a big rivalry game
Morgan Park vs Champaign Central - Can the youngest Finkster impress against the Chicago powerhouse?
Sunrise Christian vs LaLu - Two big-time national programs. Illini target Malik Hall in that one
Simeon vs Chaminade - THT and co vs another great program with short-lived Illini target Jericole Hellems

Wow, did not realize Whitney Young as not playing. Since Young, and Slaughter, were part of the founders , I just assumed they'd be there.

Anybody know the back story for the absence of Whitney Young?

They are playing against Vashon (MO) on Saturday night.

Don't want to speak for him, but I think TownieMatt was just picking out a few interesting matchups he had some color to add on, but didn't cite whole schedule for the weekend...

Correct.

Don't know anything about Vashon, and WY doesn't have anyone we're recruiting right now, so I didn't include their game. Although I'm a big fan of Javon Freeman-Liberty.

Khalil Whitney says that Oregon, Georgetown, Syracuse, Illinois, St. John's and a couple more are after him the hardest.

No clue about his recruiting, but Malnati is a hell of a coach.

Vashon is a StL public high school and defending class 4 champs. Currently ranked #1 again.

No, you were right. Fenwick and St. Joe's are in the Chicago Catholic League.

Source

To clarify, St. Joe's has only been in the CCL for a few years now, so anyone thinking back to the 90s and 2000s, they were not in the CCL then. It wasn't until 2010-2011 that they first joined.

Fenwick, to my knowledge, has always been in the CCL since about a decade after it was founded in like the late 20s.

Fenwick is like 3 blocks from the Chicago-Oak Park city line. Loyola was a founding member in like 1918 so makes sense why they are in it. They added Providence in the 90s and St. Laurence in the 60s. Providence is in New Lenox which is much away, but the biggest head scratcher is Bishop Mac in Kankakee. I remember my freshmen year we had a football game at Bishop Mac. It was a super annoying long drive for a CCL game.

Man its games all day at UIC. If I wasn't going out of town in the morning I would spend the day up there.

I remember him on the wrong end of Maggette and Andre Brown from Leo.

HS season getting into swing and no Mike the elevator. C'mon back, Mike, you're missed.
