At least he isn't going to IU! (barring any late changes of course)

Exactly. Sucks that he won't end up here but awesome that he won't be at Indiana. At the end of the day not sure the staff could have done anything differently. And props to the Wilkes family for going about things the way they did.

Oh well, we have a great group already and it was fun to be in the mix for Wilkes.

On to the next one!

Crappy trails, Kris Wilkes. Coming off a B10 title this is an absolute bonafide whiff of a recruiting class.
Kinda like Illinois circa 2006. Hopefully it means they also get to endure a decade long slow decline into mediocrity. Perfect timing as I think we're back on the way up. [emoji106]

You'd think that close knit family would want to see him play in college for that one year though...

So, Wilkes is heading to UCLA. Our only other targets are Kiir, Epperson, and Wooten. Kiir sounds like he may be leaning toward VCU. Epperson is likely to wait until spring and may be a blue blood target if he maintains his summer level of play. Wooten is a mystery at this point.

Hopefully we get one of those three or a late riser/decommit at PF/C. I assume we'll be aggressive again in the 5th year transfer market - probably a scoring wing or a veteran PG. After a huge start, our 2017 class should settle into the 15-20 range in the composite rankings if we don't land anyone else.

Can someone tell me how Kiir became a VCU lean? Not arguing with you, just thought he was crazy about the Illini. What happened?

I'm guessing we got in on Wooten way too late.

Don't forget Verge.:)

I know people don't agree with it, but you can't save a scholly if a player of Verge's caliber wants to commit. When you are trying to bring a program back from the dead you take all the talent you can get.

But...... if all the insinuations thrown about on here about academic/qualifying concerns are true, then you can't just say things like that. For that to happen a lot of things would have to fall into place, ie: qualifying grades, transcripts in order, commitable offer, zero chance of a big committing, etc... It's not as simple as saying 'open scholarship + willing commit = Illini player'.

This is just my opinion, but I just can't see Wilkes going that far away from home. I wouldn't count us out just yet.

Since their assumption is that he's 1-and-done, then I'm guessing their thinking is that they can sacrifice seeing a lot of his games in person for that one year. After all, they'll be doing the same thing when he's in the pros. Plus they'll figure out how to stream the Pac12 network (i.e., Sling, etc.) And when they do decide to take a nice warm trip or two out there, I'm sure they'll unofficially be taken care of.

Now it'll be interesting to see where he ends up in the final RSCI rankings. He's #18 right now and if one looks at the last three years, there's a steep drop off after the top 10 in terms of guys going pro after one year. Of the top 10 guys, 22 of 30 were 1-and-done, while for the #10-#20 ranked guys, only 7 of 30 were 1-and-done. Like Cliff found out, sometimes it's hard to get showcased at these blueblood-ish type programs.

At UCLA, it's been a bit of a mixed bag for their top kids to go pro after their frosh year. Zach Levine (2013 RSCI #49) and Kevon Looney (2014 RSCI #11) both did it successfully but Jonah Hamilton (2013 Rivals #14) didn't play as a freshman, though he's started every game the last two years. And Jonah Bolden (2014 RSCI #36) left after two seasons as a non-starter and Prince Ali (2015 RSCI #36) failed to start a game his first season.
