Let's not pretend that a high schooler from Florida has been paying attention to Illinois politics. Let's also not pretend that UI isn't still a respected academic institution. It is.

Based solely on recent basketball history, Michigan has a leg up on us right now, and their academics are great to boot, so he chose Michigan. This wasn't Rauner's or Madigan's fault.

would be one of the few things that weren't their fault:D

Agree. It was clear long ago that Nolley was leaning toward VT. The signs were there, even if some didn't want to acknowledge them.

By some, do you mean our coaching staff? Because the entire staff flew out to Georgia to see him twice after his OV. Coach Chin thought he was in. Until the week before his announcement of course

Conditt to Iowa State was sorta like Ayo to Illinois. The family connection to the school (or the staff, in Ayo's case) was too much to overcome.

Castleton was the one that disappointed me. We were on him longer than Michigan and essentially worked ourselves into a leader status. To see Michigan swoop in last second and win was disappointing, but also indicative of whether Michigan stands as a program vs. Illinois at this moment in time.

When Mich hired Luke Yaklich in early Aug, they became a contender. OA was hired to win these battles, he didn't. I agree though, the Mich brand carries much more weight than ours right now.

We need to land quality bigs. I suspect we'll go hard after a spring 5th-year type, but the difference between a good 2018-19 season and a great one could rest on our front court.

Still unclear what happened with the recruitment of Amadou Sow. He would've been a much needed rebounder & rim protector. When no one is talking, sometimes it's an admission's issue

Not what happened. Look at who else committed to his school of choice at the same time. It will enlighten your understanding.

Word was that to get Sow you had to take his fellow Oakland Soldier teammate Sekou Toure. UCSB was willing to do that, we weren't.

For the sake of argument, let's say nothing becomes of this FBIfbi situation and Underwood, both because he is OUR coach ;) and there doesn't appear to be much "there" there.

At what point do those coaches whispering FBI into recruits ears lose credibility?

If I am the parent of that kid and the coach whispers that ever - that coach immediately loses credibility.

Maybe I need to re-word my post a little. I'm not trying to take any credit away from the staff. They put the full-court press on both Smith and Ayo and got the job done. I am more than pleased that the staff got both players, I am ecstatic!

But I felt it necessary to point out that the circumstances for 2 highly skilled guys like Ayo and Smith are very rare let alone to happen in back to back classes. 2 players this skilled with such a stong lean towards the Illini won't come around often, especially with our recent history the past 10 years.

Can BU get an in-state guy even though his family is pulling him back to the east coast ALA Brunson? Can BU find and evaluate a Jawun Evans or Trent Frazier before they blow up? Can he get a highly ranked out of state guy with no UI connection ALA Leron Black. Can he pull a highly ranked guy out of a rival state like IU ALA JCL or win a head to head recruiting battle with Cuonzo? Will he recruit under-the-radar instate guys ALA Van Vleet?

These are the types of recruiting battles that BU hasn't been tested yet. And he will have to win some of these if we expect to have the talent to compete.
coaching + winning precedes enduring recruiting success

Any coach using the FBI card to recruit against BU better be 100% sure they are clean from any connections to it. They don't know when the next wave or info or arrests will drop. With so much crossover in the business, it cam be easy to try amd tie someome to the investigation.

Lol, this post made me laugh. Colin Castleton was quoted as saying "How will UI having to pay from the University's heftyreserves instead of tax dollars affect my education?"

Landers Nolley said "If Illinois doesn't get Worker's Compensation reform, I'm taking my talents to Virginia Tech."

George Conditt said "I'm moving to Iowa because the individual income tax increased from 3.75% to 4.95%. That is unacceptable to me and why my dad pushed me to Iowa State."

Please note none of these quotes are real and are heavy snark.

IMHO - only the blue bloods overcome some of the things you've outlined with any type of frequency. I say, field the routine grounders cleanly. Many successful recruiting machines are built on that premise. Our product on the floor and continuing to build trust in relationships will help sway the occasional unexpected recruiting pleasantry. I'll go one more and say I think this staff has found their "Trent Frazier" in Spicy G....only time will tell :)

Also, am i the only one who would dread becoming a university of one and dones? I absolutely would hate that in the team that i support. As a fan, I want to get to know the players, I want to see them grow. I want to know that their college experience had a little bit to do with their success. Not saying I don't want the occasional blue chipper, but I'll take top 50-150 all day long. I think a group of well coached 50-150 players who play together for a few years can beat a team with a couple of blue chippers (1-25) with some level of consistency.

Hilarious!

But it shows the sad state of the internet that you felt you had to explain your sarcasm before some fool took off and ran with it.

no THT news.... am I in the wrong forum?
Boy, I agree. I thought we typically had local IL forum members staked-out, all around town. However......

No pics. No sightings. No rumors. No buzz.

I hope we're not fat, happy and content with signing JUST Ayo.

If Smith and Ayo don't get you excited, you need help. I expect at least 1 of them to play in the NBA, and it wouldn't surprise me if both went to the league. They're doing this based on selling their vision, more than anything. Once they start winning, it will get better. Once people see the offense in action, they will check off another box. And once we send a guy to the league, they will check off another. For as much of a rebuild as Illinois needs after Groce, they have done an amazing, A+ job, for just one offseason. Couldn't ask for more! Enjoy the ride, these guys know how to hit accelerator.

My previous quote was based solely on 2018 class. Sure, BU/Staff held onto TF, DW, closed MS, got MA, GE, VM; GREAT! I will take that group despite JCL, JT, JP decommits. I just can't give this staff 100% credit for the 2017 class as much of that heavy lifting was done by Groce, etc... Not complaining, we are a sensitive bunch, just clarifying my comment based on 2018.

The fact that MS & AD are potentially NBA guys, perhaps early even makes this class more important from a position balance and depth standpoint . Unless you're a blue blood, it's not a long term recruiting model to lose a bunch and not have depth coming in. My guess is the staff wouldn't be happy with a 1 kid class, even if it were Michael. There are enough Q's on Leron and, or Finke staying after this year, and we don't know 1 bit if GE is a Big caliber talent. I'm simply hoping for some more depth and balance from a big position.

The coaching staff is not.

The creepy stalker fans might be.

I'll take the time to remark that this staff does not operate the same way that Groce's did. Fewer leaks. Hand played very close to the chest. I sincerely believe that scant news is going to be the new norm.

Not necessarily a bad thing. Half of the "I saw x on a golf cart on the quad" posts were bunk anyway.

Lack of leaks in the modus operandi of this entire administration from JW on down. Nobody talks ever and while it may be bad from a message board standpoint, it is good business.

In 1970, the hottest young coach in college was Bobby Knight at Army.
He absolutely loved coaching West Point types and when he accepted the job at Wisconsin (yes, Wisconsin) he had one condition, nothing was to be released before he had a chance to talk to his team at West Point.

Somebody at Wisc leaked it and Knight, infuriated, withdrew and little later took the job at IU.

Silence is golden

Agreed. Additionally, in this case, I think THT has kept his desires close to him. As I mentioned awhile back, his mother quickly shot down a reporter who claimed to have sources about where he would prefer to go.

For those who like to make a big deal out of Twitter posts, THT has put out a considerable amount of pro Illinois content compared to his other official visits.

I can tell you that I saw him at out last night with Mark Snith, Trent Frazier, a few other guys I didn't recognize and a group of girls. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves. I hope this doesn't make an insider lol
