Lack of leaks in the modus operandi of this entire administration from JW on down. Nobody talks ever and while it may be bad from a message board standpoint, it is good business.

In 1970, the hottest young coach in college was Bobby Knight at Army.
He absolutely loved coaching West Point types and when he accepted the job at Wisconsin (yes, Wisconsin) he had one condition, nothing was to be released before he had a chance to talk to his team at West Point.

Somebody at Wisc leaked it and Knight, infuriated, withdrew and little later took the job at IU.

Silence is golden

Great Story, I've never heard this one. I guess Wisconsin really dodged a bullet.

When the first Illini BB game you saw had Manny Jackson on the team, you've seen alot.

As bad as the Knight situation at Wisconsin was, six months later, they passed on Bo Schembeckler to hire a coach no one remembers.

I don't think Wisconsin dodged a bullet, I think they took it right between the eyes.

Haha, wow. I've never heard that story.

Granted, IU had history even before Bob Knight, and they always had a higher ceiling than Wisconsin. But in a sense, that leaker cost Wisconsin 3 national championships (not literally, but you get the point).

And yes, this administration is much tighter lipped than the prior one, and I'm perfectly fine with that.

I myself kind of like it that they don't let much slip. I do wonder if they pushed the #25 with THT, one would think it would be a lot easyer to use that with Deon mainly still be vocal and well seen

For those wondering about any bad blood between Ayo and THT, I think this should put your mind at ease a little bit.

Yeah, it's probably overblown. That said, it's no secret that these kids retweet or give shout-outs to those who tweet positive things about them. Doesn't mean he's endorsing the guy's "THT + Ayo?" suggestion.

We'll see. I feel better about THT than I did a month ago, but I'd still bet on the field against us.

When was the last time we "won" a recruiting battle that we weren't a leader, or we weren't predicted to win?

Edit: not tossups or coin flips.

Alstork.

Sorry, wasn't paying attention to the no tossups.

Anyhow, after this weekend it will be a tossup, at worst.

Well, Illinois was widely considered the favorite before Groce got fired. Then UK and MSU got into the race -- right around the time Groce was fired -- and everybody assumed Illinois was out.

But about a week before he announced, the word was that he was heavily favoring Illinois. I seem to recall pretty much everybody knowing that he was coming to Illinois about 2-3 days before his announcement.

JCL was probably the best example of getting a kid that in the months leading up to his commitment he wasn't expected to go to Illinois.

Regarding the Knight and Wisconsin leaks, didn't we have a similar situation with Guenther and Sampson? Rumors were he was ready to hire him until word leaked he they were meeting.

I'd say WE dodged a bullet there

Guenther rented a room in a hotel in O.C. under his own name and within 3 minutes of getting in the room the phone rang. Assuming, correctly, that it was the press he didn't answer but told Samson they would try to reconnect later.

Fortunately they didn't.

Our present AD has more clandestine skills in his little finger than most AD have in their whole body.

no THT news.... am I in the wrong forum?

There was 150+ fans there... THT worked out there were some nice chants going on for THT.. family seemed to really appreciate it. Mom commented that nowhere else had fans show up like that. THT shook just about everybodys hands afterwards.. Some pics were taking and one was put on twitter but then taken back down.. Apparently taking a pic during the actual workout is a "no no". I wasn't aware of that?

Family seemed to really really enjoy themselves and the fan support seemed to resonate with them.

This here is what was needed to show Talen he was wanted here. Not as much as the coaches, but the students he would be playing for. Thanks for all that showed for the work out. It might be the difference.

He's been pretty quiet about his preference, and staff won't say a word. Hope we get a verbal before signing day, which is right around the corner.;):chief:

Not what happened. Look at who else committed to his school of choice at the same time. It will enlighten your understanding.

Yes of course, that's common knowledge! The question was pertaining to the reason that we stopped recruiting him weeks prior to that. Never stop recruiting a position of need until you're told no. We weren't told no, we stopped recruiting him. You never know how it will play out. I'm aware of the fact that we weren't going to offer his teammate.

It's VERY bizarre that a player would lower himself because of a package deal to a school the level of UCSB over a Pac12 & Big10 offer. Typically, the package deal brings the lower level recruit up to the Power 5 school, not the other way around. But who knows what some recruits prioritize.

If Smith and Ayo don't get you excited, you need help. I expect at least 1 of them to play in the NBA, and it wouldn't surprise me if both went to the league. They're doing this based on selling their vision, more than anything. Once they start winning, it will get better. Once people see the offense in action, they will check off another box. And once we send a guy to the league, they will check off another. For as much of a rebuild as Illinois needs after Groce, they have done an amazing, A+ job, for just one offseason. Couldn't ask for more! Enjoy the ride, these guys know how to hit accelerator.

Exactly, he has done this without coaching a game, which is Underwood's best attribute IMO.

If this is referring to Sow, don't think we had shot at him anyway. Might have been the friend, or academic issue, myself I believe he was staying home. The kid is from California, why did he want to go to Midwest? At the time, think we were still heavy on CC. Which I think ended up better for us anyway. CC will transfer to Florida the first chance he can. ;)

We will get a big, the one we want , all takes time.

not real sure what you are reading into there, but hey if it makes you think there is no bad blood I am all for it. I do not think there has ever been bad blood between Ayo and THT, the bad blood is between adults around them

THT left the MIF, presumably because he was miffed at being second banana. Which he clearly was. But respect involves lots of variables and whose to say he wasn't dissed? Anyway, he bolted and that's when things got bad. The Irvins acted like little kids and thoroughly trashed THT. Pretty shameful, IMO.

Highly, highly doubt THT has a beef with Ayo. He's also abundantly aware that the Irvins aren't running the Illinois hoops program.

Don't know if we'll land THT, but I definitely think we've given him a lot of food for thought.

Prospects certainly retweet things they are mentioned in, but these prospects are constantly mentioned so I do think there is some selection in what they choose to retweet. I don’t think he would retweet something he didn’t like. Again, I’m not saying there was ever beef or that tweets are reliable indicator of interest.

I’m not personally reading much into it, but there are some that do and some who have floated around the idea that Ayo and THT didn’t get along.
