you said we need to get a transfer big who can play in 19, I do not agree with that at all if you are going to do that just get a fr big for 18 he can rs or what ever and he doesnt waste a year .

'18 freshman is the ideal case but the problem is not many good '18 freshmen bigs are available right now.

This spring we get lucky because a late boomer (Smith) in a position of need arises in our heartland. Hoping the same thing happens for a big and we get him in the next spring is too much optimism.

But there could be some Ed Morrow level '17 bigs request transfer in spring and we can acquire them and use one RS year to fit them into the system.

Whitney gets an offer from LSU. That puts a liitle different shade on that recruitment.

It will be interesting to see if Tamell Pearson signs with UAB in the fall or waits until Spring.

IMO it's very unlikely he's a one and done.. The NBA is the final goal for the large majority of 5* recruits so I certainly understand his confidence in saying it won't take him long to get there but he has a ways to go as most kids do at that age.

If he is a one and done though, that will be a great thing for us considering how many people we return next season.

Dekker was a five star recruit.

And Rivals had Frank Kamiski as a three star. Just saying people can improve, and I would hate to see an improved Finke on another team. However, I also trust the staff knows what it's doing.

The best possible outcome would be Okoro would commit sooner than later.

If Ayo declares for draft which he has declared the want to do, he would not be around from the Hey "Lets build something here together angle".

Now is there a chance Okoro could reclass and join us next year with Ayo...now that is something to ponder....hmmm, I like that scenario.:chief:

How many times have you seen the #27 player in a class go one and done the next season? It's good to have goals, but that doesn't mean you are going to reach all of your goals right away. Plus, the NBA is sounding like the one and done rule is on the way out sooner than later.

Probably closest would be Jamaal Murray, a big PG with many tools. He reclassified and went high in the draft.

I think both M Smith and Ayo have many tools and size that may excite NBA teams. But agree typically that ranking doesn't justify a "one and done" projection.

Jamaal Murray was only ranked by 2 services because of late reclassification. He was 12 on Scout and 10 on 247. Not a good comp.

The 2017 produced several 1st rounders above RSCI 10...maybe that starts a new trend. The 6 previous drafts averaged 2 1st round 1 and dones from 11 to 100.

For fun, I went back 5 years and looked at any PG/CG ranked in the 20-30 range to see how long they stayed on campus.

Obviously the 2017 class is outside the scope of this discussion since they haven't even played a real game yet, so I'm beginning with 2016 and working backwards.

2016: Kobi Simmons, Arizona: ONE AND DONE
2016: Bruce Brown, Miami: Entering his sophomore year
2016: Andrew Jones, Texas: Entering his sophomore year
2016: Cassius Winston, MSU: Entering his sophomore year
2016: Alterique Gilbert, UCONN: Entering his sophomore year
2015: Jalen Brunson, Villanova: Entering his junior year
2015: Jalen Adams, UCONN: Entering his junior year
2015: Jawun Evans, Oklahoma State: PLAYED TWO YEARS
2015: Tyler Dorsey, Oregon: PLAYED TWO YEARS
2014: Tyler Ulis, Kentucky: PLAYED TWO YEARS
2014: Joel Berry, UNC: Entering his senior year
2014: Melo Trimble, Maryland: PLAYED THREE YEARS
2013: Tyler Ennis, Syracuse: ONE AND DONE
2013: Cat Barber, NC State: PLAYED THREE YEARS
2013: Terry Rozier, Louisville: PLAYED TWO YEARS
2013: Rysheed Jordan, St. Johns: Personal issues
2013: Nigel Williams Goss, UW/Gonzaga: PLAYED THREE YEARS
2012: Yogi Ferrell, IU: PLAYED FOUR YEARS
2012: Semaj Christon, Xavier: PLAYED TWO YEARS
2012: Marcus Paige, UNC: PLAYED FOUR YEARS

So there you have it. 20 kids. 2 one-and-dones. And 3 four-year kids. The rest are either 2 years, 3 years, or still playing.

I think both Mark and Ayo will play 2-3 years and enter NBA. Mark has a better chance of one-and-done because his tremendous upside.

Ayo has NBA potential but I think scouts will be worried about his shooting and strength in the early stage.

Devin Booker was 20+ on every site, one and done at Kentucky, put up 70+ in the league last year. Not sure if he's the last, but a perfect reference. He was kept on the JV team at our high school (bad program) until state tournament. His dad brought him to Mississippi to mentor him after that; worked out I'd say.

if we get one in 18 we will have them and Spicy-G and yeah I know EJ will be more like what ever we see Black doing this year, and even if Okoro is recruited by everyone I like our chances with him, and wont be shocked to see him commit before we land another guy in 18, this is just a guess nothing more
That was one heck of a run on sentence. I applaud your commitment on that one. šŸ˜‰

I started to do this too, glad you finished before I got too far :D

One thing I noticed for a random note, Ayo's 247 composite ranking of 27 is the same as Jawun Evans. Ayo's independent 247 ranking of 30 is the same as Jalen Brunson.

Thanks, Verified Insider!

I find it interesting that the first names Tyler and Jalen both appear in clusters around the same times - I'm thinking Jalen was for Jalen Rose, but I can't remember for the life of me who Tyler was (ok, I'm getting old).

Let's hope that someone doing this list in 18 years sees a bunch of Marks and Ayos on it.

Two guesses:

(1) Pres. John Tyler?
(2) Tyler Griffey?

No, they were horrible, but he was only a 6'3" skinny Freshman, although Michigan was on him. His dad played at Missouri, and was Conference POY SR. Year, had a cup of coffee in the NBA. Basically took him to Mississippi and got him in all the camps, AAU, etc.. He obviously developed a ton. He was my daughters long distance love for a while (probably not his only one:). I'll never forget asking him if he was going to Illinois over Skype and he looked at me like I was crazy:) It was all MSU for him up until close to signing day.

Anyone hear about what the staff is doing with BPJ, if anything?

Staff still wants him and could end up being a spring commit unless he goes to UCLA or Washington. Illinois obviously has to get him for an official to have a shot.

Now here's an interesting conundrum. Obviously you have to get him on campus this fall to have a shot or really be in the picture, but if he is 100% sure a spring signee, would you rather have an official visit in the spring or the fall?
