Now here's an interesting conundrum. Obviously you have to get him on campus this fall to have a shot or really be in the picture, but if he is 100% sure a spring signee, would you rather have an official visit in the spring or the fall?

Not sure he's worth the effort. Good player, big, but UCLA calling hard to think we get a whiff

He is also heavily involved with Depaul so we might have a chance there...

Probably playing time and role in UCLA is a concern.

Anyone think we get another commit in time for fall signing?

Having Ayo on board should help a lot with recruiting Spring, but I wonder if we still have a shot at getting someone in the next week.

Nope

Tamell Pearson was named the MVP of the ISR All American camp. Still anxious to see if he follows through on UAB commitment.

I thought we offered Tamell to increase his stock and please MIF for getting Ayo.

Now it seems that we probably should have made it a bundle deal.

The prevailing thought is that Illinois offered Pearson to get other programs to take a second look and once some did other offers followed.

Personally I think he could contribute in Underwood's system but they've seen him multiple times so I'll defer to coach on this.

You'd have to think that if he had a true offer to Illinois he'd be going there instead of UAB but strange things happen in recruiting.

Well, that, or he had a true offer but coach basically said "you're going to redshirt and be all-Big Ten in year 5" and he decided he wanted immediate playing time (or something to that effect).

Good reminder that there are layers to these things.
Committable offer sounds so clear until you remind us . . . correctly, imho . . . that it is possible to add the redshirt expectation to the deal. Probably doesn't happen that way (harder to sell offers with caveats), but also possible.
If you're not in the room, you don't know. At least, not for certain.
Good post, sacraig

There is a whole spectrum of in-between options, too, based on how honest the staff is with the recruit. You can't tell every kid they will be a star from day one. Perhaps you tell a kid there is opportunity but there are guys ahead of him and he's going to have to earn it, and then UAB tells him he's the guy from day one.

Obviously just me but I'd take the Big 10 offer in that scenario. Staying in college longer just really sweetens that deal.

I really don't think very many coaches talk about redshirts when they are recruiting kids. There will be plenty of time to explain to them they aren't ready to contribute right away after they are on campus practicing. Hard to sell a new car if you tell people coming on the lot they can't drive it for a year.

Unless, of course, you want to offer a kid as a favor like some people here suggest. That's a way to do it while discouraging them from actually accepting and without having to tell the kid "you aren't REALLY invited." Better optics.

Full disclosure, I have no idea how much any of this truly happens. I'd imagine coaches' approaches to these issues are as varied as the coaches themselves.

No, they were horrible, but he was only a 6'3" skinny Freshman, although Michigan was on him. His dad played at Missouri, and was Conference POY SR. Year, had a cup of coffee in the NBA. Basically took him to Mississippi and got him in all the camps, AAU, etc.. He obviously developed a ton. He was my daughters long distance love for a while (probably not his only one:). I'll never forget asking him if he was going to Illinois over Skype and he looked at me like I was crazy:) It was all MSU for him up until close to signing day.

Grandville High School. Don't know about their b'ball team but overall they have some very nice athletic facilities.

Think we better leave this alone. Pearson has a verbal and he seems content. The offer was made while many offers were being extended at the Indy Eybl. We have Ayo, I think we will pickup a really good big, whenever the one we like is available. Outside of Chicago more preferred ATM, there are many fish in the sea.;):illinois:

So, in other words, wait till DeSousa decommits after Kansas is implicated?
