You are correct Jrich. Recruiting doesn't really end until the start of next season. Mark Smith was a great Spring signing. We will have at least one or two signed in November.

1) If you don't want to follow our recruits then why are you on the RECRUITING thread?

2) It is extremely easy to ban yourself from this site. The rules are really simple and Dan doesn't let the bad stuff slide. Go ahead and give it a try.:thumb:

I'm here because I love Illinois basketball and am passionate about recruiting. I also never said I don't want to follow our recruits. I did say I'm not going pay attention to some as they're trending away from us, but many here jump on the bandwagon and ignore all the warning signs, which fuels the disappointment fires. I am choosing to take the position that if they come great, if they don't, then detaching from the hype makes it easier.

Bad stuff? Please expand on this proclamation. This is a topic that stirs emotions, and each of us have a right to share our feelings of how RECRUITING impacts our emotions. Unfortunately those of us who are disappointed about RECRUITING are assumed to be attacking the staff, program, etc... I for one have NEVER said anything negative about the aforementioned and have only expressed my disappointment over our 2018 recruiting class to date.

This is why I don't understand the pessimism. Yes, we don't have any 18' commits. But the key wording is "so far". It's the first week in October, there is still a long way to go. This isn't football where we would need 20+ commits. We just need 2 or 3, maybe 4. Let it play out before being pessimistic.

I'm on your team and want just as much as you to end up with a good class. I want nothing more than to be able to post in the future about how it all ended up just fine. Unfortunately I can't withhold my frustration over where our 2018 class sits right now seeing how hard the staff has worked to bring who they believe belong.

However, an individual's perception of the program includes both recruiting and on the court success in both the near and long-term. So those that aren't freaking out may be expecting better near-term results on the court, and/or better long-term success. It makes sense to look at a coaching change as a process and be patient with the program's development. And let's stop playing "keeping up with the Jones" and looking at what recruits other first year HCs have, and just relax and enjoy having a true professional at the helm for the first time in a while. We will win some basketball games and we will have an on-court product that we will enjoy watching. That is a huge win. Don't let the myriad bumps in the road get you down!

Not sure what this has to do with my post. Personally, and I have followed recruiting closely for 35 years, people should neither freak out nor sugar coat recruiting losses. But their attitude will have little to do with our record this year.

LOL... yeah, if someone is trying to preach to me the value and impact of recruiting, maybe they have missed something :)

Recruits are the backbone of your future. Many think we have missed on high level targets, it is not true. They are correct we have missed on some good players, but all should think that these recruits still have to think about the season they have to play. I'm still sure staff is out, beating the bushes, and will get quality recruits.
Ayo is still #1priorty, has been since spring. All need to think of what we grabbed in spring , some guys that bloomed during there senior year. I have no problem waiting for QUALITY players, rather than grabbing guys to so we have a commitment, that 6months later decide to go somewhere else. If they want to stay, we want them to play here.:thumb::illinois:

This is what happens when you don't win. Good gets are forgotten. IMO, a class with Malcolm Hill and Kendrick Nunn is a good class. But, we never won with them and so, therefore, the thought becomes Groxe didn't have good classes.

And Ob, man, I just think you like to argue. If we make it to the tourney this year, after missing out for many, the fan base will be happy. If we get Ayo (really want) and THT (really want) and some other good get but miss the tourney again, people will be angry at the end of the season.

I understand that recruiting matters. Again, I am just more concerned with winning this year.

Your opinion and my opinion differ on the Hill, Nunn, Tate class being good. No problem with that.

STOP!!!!

Recruiting success IS VITALLY IMPORTANT for current season wins and losses. Not only does it generate program momentum and swag, which breeds court confidence, but it provides performance pressure on the players. Hasn't Kentucky built a dynasty based on recruiting? You don't think the UK kids playing in one year don't realize the pressure of performing with the 5* kid coming next year that could move him to the bench and out of draft lingo?

Sure, effects of recruiting impact current year performance intangibly more so than tangibly, but WITHOUT QUESTION recruiting affects that years team's wins and losses. Additionally, ticket sales, donors pockets, team confidence, energy, media discussion(recruiting), performance, and more are impacted, which move a program positively or negatively. Obviously the recruits affect a program tangibly more so in future years, but underestimating the importance of recruiting on the current years team is a mistake . Aside from the above, coaches can focus more on coaching when classes are filled. To think recruiting success or failures don't impact current performance is simply nativity to college sports.

Brilliant correlation!

The Windy City
Preface: You're post was very well written and had fantastic insight, but I need to nitpick the above.

I'd like to know the last time this board thought a recruit we watched/offered/visited/ wouldn't have been a good pick up (at least in the beginning)? I get being excited and all for these kids, but seeing as ASU is our main competition in this, I can't imagine this kid is on many radars (not saying thats always a bad thing, but it's at least moderately telling, at least until this staff has sometime to show they can develop guys).

Guess Tim Finke falls in the category, but there was plenty of love for him up until a few months ago. Or maybe I'm just being a downer.
Because I saw video of him playing? And people like Evan Daniels have also sung his praises? Calling him a top 50-75 kid? Because I see a player that can shoot, dribble, drive and think it's a great fit for Underwood's offense? Because this kid did well on the international stage against players his age?

I doubt top programs would say their recruiting efforts for next year will impact their current season success.

The real coaching abilities on and off the court will determine our success, not whether we get a given recruit. As the coaching successes evolve, we will be in a more friendly recruiting place going fwd.

I see the bragging rights game as a potential turning point if we can pull it off against a top 5 recruiting class....a "wtf" moment for future recruits looking at IL and optimism for fanbase.

BU is selling a new and fast system to play in and a staff that will get the most from each player...but we'll have to demonstrate it on the court before the fire is lit for many future recruits.

That said, if we recruit good players that want to work and learn and accept good coaching, I strongly believe we will win and over time the recruiting trail will become easier. I like that approach much better than "beg/borrow/steal some 4 and 5 stars and ride them to the promised land" (I believe thats the current Mizzou strategy, right?)

I think Elias V would be a fantastic get. I thought that before the latest video posted. And after watching the most recent one, I think it moreso!

I have been watching some of his full games, and he isnt the greatest at playing D, but he does play D most of the time guarding a taller player. He looks like another one who needs some Fletch time, but he can dribble some, jump some, shoot some, play D some, I will watch a few more games after the Illini play today, but from what I have seen he is a good all around player, if he is really 6-6 all the better

I thought he was 6'4?

Someone else said we still have all of our top targets. We still have top target, but not all of. Hopefully the class eventually shapes up to be good or better.

Looking forward to BUs 1st year on the court. Using my Rutger's ticket as a bookmark, seems like that was years ago. Another month to go before we see the product on the court.
