So if you grew up in the cold and snow of Finland and you come to the U.S. having the option of playing in the cornfields of Illinois or the palm trees of Tempe Arizona, which would you pick?????

Not everyone prefers the heat. My daughter wants to stay in the top half of the country, so she can have snow. DNA test pending....:D

Likely the 20th

I've read elsewhere that he may decide among X, GT and Iowa State after this weekend. Hope not. He's my most coveted recruit but my hopes diminish by the week.

Xavier seems like the one to beat right now, but these ILL kids sure do seem to love Ames.

Sure hope we can get Ayo on board, and then THT will visit and follow suit.

Having Ayo, THT, and Valtonen on board in the fall sure would be nice.

I've traveled to Europe extensively throughout the last two decades and I'd say Chicago is relatively unknown compared to New York and LA.

I grew up in Eastern Europe and everybody new about Chicago because of Michael Jordan.

That was in the 90's and early 2000's, though, so I can't speak for more recent years.

Not saying you're wrong, though...NYC and LA could be more well-known than Chicago, but that doesn't mean Chicago isn't also well known.

For some reason, mentioning Chicago usually gets a reaction along the lines of "Oh yeah, Al Capone. Bang. Bang." Hopefully, the young man likes shiny black cars and tommy guns. If so, he's ours.

Fortunately, Arizona State is in neither New York nor L.A. And everyone in Europe has heard of Chicago. Few of them likely know where exactly Arizona is, and none of them have heard of Tempe.

"Chicago! BANG BANG Al Capone!"

In my experience the reaction overseas has been "Oh, Chicago? Michael Jordan! :D"

I was in Europe for three weeks this summer, and it was Obama that I heard from most people when I told them I lived in Chicago. But got some Jordan as well.

I'm not sure a familiarity with Chicago will have an impact one way or the other. The only thing as far as geography that might help is travel back and forth is easier/shorter Finland to Chicago than Finland to Phoenix. (I think)

The more I read and see of Valtonen/Finnish player the more I like. All jokes aside, he would fit BU system well, he might be one of the better "fits" of players on the roster or who we are recruiting.

When I lived in Italy, most people's reaction was "Chicago? I'd never visit there. I don't want to get shot". And/or admiration for having survived such a war zone in living there.

People also need to stop living in 2003 and realize that Champaign-Urbana's campus in and of itself is now a draw to come to Illinois. We are going on several years in a row of being on every top party and top campus list, and younger people certainly do not think of "Champaign, IL" the same way some of you folks who were on campus when the town was MUCH less impressive do.

Not sure how much this means to star Bball players, but I agree. Illinois has a beautiful campus!!

Here's an article (not all that well written IMO) that describes the first two years recruiting by the last few coaches. From Lon Kruger to John Groce. Interesting to compare to BU. Kruger and Self didn't seem to do all that well the first year but did well the second. I didn't read Weber (since it was mentioned here already in detail) or Groce.

https://writingillini.com/2017/10/10/illinois-basketball-first-two-years-recruiting-key-success/

It's somewhat misleading in places, because the author considers the first recruiting class to be the class that the coach inherited when coming to campus.

Thus, Weber is credited with McBride, Randle, and Warren Carter for his first class. All three committed to Bill Self, whereas the author suggests that Weber landed them. In reality, Weber's first real class at Illinois was 2004 with Brock and Pruitt. Just the same, Groce's first class was the 2013 class with Nunn, Hill, Morgan, Colbert, and Tate. But the article suggests that Groce's first class was the 0-fer 2012 class.

What Underwood did in getting Mark Smith seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Most new coaches don't add much -- if anybody -- to that very first class they inherit.
