So if you grew up in the cold and snow of Finland and you come to the U.S. having the option of playing in the cornfields of Illinois or the palm trees of Tempe Arizona, which would you pick?????

Well, why do all these international kids go to Gonzaga, then? I mean, Spokane in the winter is a pretty bleak place.

If weather was the determining factor, schools like USC and Miami would be basketball juggernauts. But they're not. Yet schools like Kansas, Michigan State, and Gonzaga are routinely among the best in the country.

Kids are more drawn to schools that offer basketball success than schools that offer great weather. This kid is from Finland. Something tells me that he won't be scared off by the prospect of a cold winter. It's not like he's visiting from Algeria where he's used to hot desert conditions.

He is not picking between USC, UCF or Miami. He is picking between UI and ASU.

I wonder if having another European player on the roster, and being involved with a few others, works to our advantage here

As pointed out earlier, ASU also has European players.

But to answer your question, if I were from Europe I’d think it would be nice to have other Europeans on the team with whom to make fun of Americans. :D

Having spent some time in the 120 degree heat of ASU in the past summer I will take the cornfields.

People are acting like Tempe is some beach paradise, which is absolutely not the case.

Correct. The reason I -- and others -- threw out schools like Miami, USC, and UCF was to demonstrate the fallacy of warm weather exercising a decisive influence over the decisions of prospects.

He almost certainly didn't narrow his list to Illinois and ASU because of weather. He probably narrowed it because it relationship with the coaching staffs. If weather really plays a big role, then why would he even waste his time considering Illinois in the first place? Wouldn't his list consist of ASU and other warm-weather schools?

agree...as mentioned, some staffs and schools have built relationships and developed a solid euro pipeline, and it looks like we may be heading that way. seems like there would be alot of advantages in that approach...such as avoiding some of the slimy stuff that was recently uncovered by the fbi.

Agreed. That said, Tempe's weather advantage is November - April, if you don't like snow and cold. It was mid-90s on his ASU visit.

Go Illini!

Honestly? Champaign. The weather in Phoenix is absolute garbage. I live down the road in Tucson where it is usually 5 or 8 degrees cooler, and it's only barely tolerable here.

I have said this before I know we all like Ayo and THT (great for recruiting) but I really think we are extremely perimeter heavy.

I don't see (2) seasoned sophomores (D-Will and Frazier) moving over for Ayo and THT to come in and share time...I don't know you might throw Smith and TJL in the mix as well..depends on how the season goes early.....we continue to need a quality athletic big that can run the floor and defend to free Finke up to play a true stretch 4 position....

We need bodies. I'm guessing an 8-9 man rotation would be ideal given the intensity of Underwood's on-court demands. They'd all get playing time.

Yeah.....I think we're going to see more frequent rotations with Underwood than with Groce or Weber. The days of relying on one or two key players to play 36+ minutes are probably over.

When you consider that we're probably going to have 3 guards on the floor at any one time, I think there's plenty of room for Ayo, Lucas, Smith, Frazier, and Williams to coexist. Plus a wing (Valtonen, THT, whoever).

We are talking about the Finnish dude right?

To a Finn, Champaign is a tropical paradise, while Arizona is like being on the surface of the sun.

I have a lot of European friends and relatives, and I can tell you that they are much more interested in palm trees than cornfields. The place certainly does make a difference to them.

Frazier and Williams an afterthought here? Not eggin you on, but those two will be huge for us before it is all done.:chief:

That's true! The reason, is pretty simple, most of us have no factual idea what we are discussing.

But it's a dry garbage.

And there is NO comparison between wet hot garbage and dry hot garbage!

Are any of your European friends high-major basketball prospects with dreams of making the NBA?
