It kinda looks like there was now.

We've all been speculating for days. I dismissed it all because IMO it was blown way out of proportion.
In the end, THT and his family calculated on his behalf and made choices.
It's CBB recruiting. The kid is going to be just fine at Iowa St. Illinois was not his dream, nor was it a priority. You're acting like we pulled some emotional last minute rug out from under him.
yea we did pull out the rug the last minute....its been reported that way pretty plainly. no sugar coating it.

Conditt was tweeting on the replies to...I think it was Brian Snow. He said flatly that '19/'20/'21 recruits will notice this if the offer was pulled.

As well they should.... message is loud and clear.... if you want a spot take it. THT could have committed months ago and was too interested in MSU and others. They went in different directions and someone took a ride that clearly didn't mesh with THT. The only unfortunate thing is this wasn't figured out Thursday or Friday last week instead of this week. I have no doubt UofI was not THT's first choice even if it was his choice earlier in the week.

This.

Feel bad for the kid... but, he had ample opportunity. AMPLE opportunity to start the relationship earlier.

And this.

Relax my friends. This is the day that the Illini have broken into top tier program rank again. We have made our bed with the Mac Irvin Fire and we will sleep in it with them. On the same note let me provide a preemptive "I told you so" because we will be seeing both Francis Okoro and Adam Miller in O & B. Today's move of allegiance was a fantastic power move by Nick Irvin, however it was also a fantastically risky move by Underwood. Now it is incumbent upon the Fire to deliver the goods so to speak. Nick will. We will Win.

The staff messed up. They made the right decision for the long term health of the program but they need to make it a week ago and before THT's visit. If they would have done that it would be no big deal. Visits get canceled all of the time. They misread the situation and got greedy. They lost their bet. In the short term it looks bad, but if they win and Ayo/Fire help them get players. This will be quickly forgotten.

This is the main thing I will hold on to in processing through this. For my own sake, I want to remember that a cost was incurred today. Maybe the cost is negligible for our program in the grand scheme of things, and maybe paying the cost was pragmatic when all is said and done.

But there was a cost. And that cost was borne mainly by a single kid from Chicago who wanted to play basketball for :illinois:.

Yes. Conditt's dad ripped UofI a new one this evening. Said we are going to have problems recruiting Chicago from here on out.

So nothing will change basically?
Glad we got an experienced Chicago guy on staff to help us “navigate” the tense and complicated world of Chicago basketball.🙄

Greedy? No. Misjudged? Yes

the timing; don't let him visit

If they won't let us take him... then don't have the visit. don't make the push to recruit him all out and then take the offer away.

I don't like it, but i understand. and i don't blame illinois or the kid. be smarter than this... whitman plays smart; everyone else should too.

I really think this Staff messed this up you don't ever let a recruit pick and choose who u offer schollys to If I was Whitman I would have a serious talk with BU

Greedy may not be the perfect word. I think it was a certain degree of over confidence bordering on arrogance that they could do what no one else thought could be done. They were wrong and pay a slight PR hit. I think the hit won't be as bad as people are saying. Like I said these choices happen in recruiting all of the time, where they screwed up is realizing it to late. A week earlier and a is well. I do think their confidence will pay off someday when they land someone no one thinks they will get.

I don't have to sugar coat it. We made a choice, just like he did. Just like Dosunmu did. Just like Conditt did. Just like Castleton did.
Just like Nolley did......TWICE.
Just like MSU did. Just like UM did. Just like KU, Duke, Kansas, etc....etc....etc. blah blah blah.

Kids and programs make choices.
Everybody is touched by his tears now? I get it, but it is what it is. It's a game. Everybody has to play. Everybody chooses how they want to play it. We want to play it in Chicago AAU/CPL. Ok. Play ball.
Choices. Consequences.

The O&B article spells it out pretty well.:illinois:

So now there are three types of offers?

"Committable"
"Non-Committable"
ad "Committable*" where * is "subject to the approval of the handlers of the highest ranked commit in the current recruiting class"

And to think just last week I was having trouble with delineating between the first two. . .

You can't really blame BU for trying though. He really wanted THT and thought he could get it worked out and was wrong. He'll hopefully learn from it moving forward.

And as far as future recruiting...the staff will spin this story so it doesn't look so bad. They'll say they were in an impossible situation and simply had to do what's best for the program. In the end, I think most of the blame will point directly at the Irvin's and most high school programs will have nothing against BU. Hopefully that includes Robert Smith but only time will tell.

This whole situation smells like rotten fish to me. Personally, I can't see anything positive coming to us with the way this was handled other a bad lingering odor surrounding all involved in this debacle.

Yes, because Conditt's dad is such a huge influence on Chicago recruits.

Chin and AO know how to recruit and BU knows how to win. We'll be fine.

Imagine the drama for the next couple of years had THT come here and have it not work out while they are both here? Good lord. Ayo transfer, THT transfer, both transfer?
Constant drama?
Maybe this worked out for the best on both sides.

This was a bad PR day but lets not pretend that this if the first offer ever pulled from a recruit. It happens all of the time in recruiting for many reasons. This one stands out because of the timing. Once again, if this happens a week ago no one blinks. Yes there may be some ramifications at Simeon but most of the other recruits will move on quickly. They will all do what is in their own best interest as they should. I don't think it will hurt it the long term. If anything the new potential loyalty of the Fire combined with players wanting to play with Ayo will lead to more recruits.

#5,150
Its all so shortsighted. Why would anyone join MIF after this?

The same reason they always have, exposure. The MIF play at the highest level of AAU and give recruits a tremendous platform to promote themselves. Players will still join because it is in their best interest. The Fire will be fine.
