Morning fellow Illini fans. I'm feeling pretty positive about Quincy Guerrier. I discovered this morning he actually did put us
in his final three. It seems clear he likes the up and down the floor style of play which bodes well for us. And, the fact that he
may be eligible to play after the first of the year is a huge plus. I like our chances here. Let's hope he has a great visit.

Just curious as to where you heard this. I have done a search and nothing comes up except that he narrowed his list to 10.

Agree. From what I've heard from peers out East is shock he hasn't committed to 'Cuse yet. All but a done deal. Gonna take a miracle.

Sounds similar to Oscar. Everyone thinks he is going to a specific school yet hasn't committed there. Obviously the door is open. Neither of these guys is coming to central Illinois for the views.

Guerrier's path to the League is clearer with us than either of his other finalists.

I am wondering what you mean by that statement. Oregon and Syracuse definitely have a better record sending players to the league and at UI he will be forced to play more PF that he probably likes (Guerrier is a SF) away from his natural position and position at the next level.

I hope he chooses UI as well but one of the main things IMO that we lack and is probably hurting recruiting right now is proofpoints sending players to the league.

A couple of places. A 247 Sports gmail I received and also look at the attached link.

Thanks. Just to note, this article seems to think Syracuse (it's a Syracuse site) is in the lead and that Oregon is the one to beat out of the final 3.

And in the comments section someone was asking about how to pronounce his last name and his or her final comment was:

"He will henceforth be called Q. Unless he goes to Oregon (and LOL if Illinois). Then he is dead to me." We get no respect

This narrative that's taken root that "if you can convince a 4-star+ talent to visit, you have to expend that resource, every time, no matter how long the odds of landing him seem" is insane.

Couldn't agree more, and honestly I think that's an underappreciated source of this program's problems.

Nobody thinks about the opportunity cost of all those man-hours.

Like, a month ago everyone was at peace with us being out of the EJ Liddell race. But we huffed and puffed our way into bronze medal position, and now we have nothing and no time for plan B and we're talking about going to the spring with nothing in hand in two positions of desperate need AGAIN.

Significant early playing time, less competition for playing time, great system for showcasing his talents. Your points not withstanding.

For both Liddell and Guerrier we had/have a 1 in 3 chance. Those are not so long of odds to pass up a chance to land a player of that caliber.

That's not how it works. We could be in the top 2 for a kid but have a 10% chance of landing him.

True 1 in 3 odds are better but when you continually end up with 0.0

The narrative held by a small group of posters that they can figure out the odds on a recruitment by reading a recruiting site better than a coach can in hours of conversation with a player and his coach is ludicrous

What recruits have we landed in the past five years that we were absolutely shocked about? JCL?

Yes. The coaches have a much, much better (though still imperfect) sense of where things stand.

And yet, it's a results business and the results speak for themselves.

It's OK. We have always had the talent to win.

Lol! Clearly, some of you have never been involved in sales.

Can you imagine if a kid put us in his final three and wanted to come visit, but we say "nah, we already know you aren't a buyer"?

Worst tactic in the history of tactics.
That's not what we're talking about. Kids don't just select a top three then ask those schools if they're still interested. The issue is the resources spent on getting into that top three.

Whenever you have a chance with a talented highly ranked recruit to visit and use one of his only 5 OVs, you take a chance and go all out to get that recruit. Otherwise, it is a self admission that strategically you have some aspirations (personally, I call them hallucinations) to build a consistent winner without higher talent. Of course you have to close, but not taking a chance? It is defeatist attitude. JMO.

And if we can pair Ayo and TSJ with all the rest of our nice backcourt and wing pieces we will yet again. But you gotta construct a complete roster and it's not looking great on that front.

Yes, and the other important factor is consistency in our recruiting. Ayo himself has said that he wants to stay just one year, maximum two. So if he indeed becomes great (which we hope), he will not last forever. If you miss on 2019 with multiple talented recruits, then future recruits (2020 and beyond) may likely never play with Ayo even if he stays 2 years. Talent has a shorter life span.

Exactly this...

I have been in medical sales for 15 years now from carrying a bag to a national accounts exec for one of the largest companies in the world. If one of my reps said, “I am not going to go after “X” hospital system in which we know we can provide clinically equivalent solutions as well as be a great economic partner because they might say ‘no’ boss!” I am finding someone different for that role.

I agree with some that we need to manage our time and resources as a staff, but Whitman hired BU (and Lovie) to turn the program around and change the culture to one of a mindset that what we have to offer is the equivalent to the top programs in the country (less the Blue Bloods). If Underwood was throwing offers out to 2* and 3* kids left and right and spending our OV’s on these kids as our FIRST options I would be highly skeptical of his rebuild plan.

If we land someone the likes of Q, OT or Timme it will be interesting to see how some of you back out of your argument of, “why did we have him for an OV as 24/7 and all of the “sources” said he was a “xxx” lean and we only have a 10% chance”.

I get the win now or else mindset of college athletics we live in, but contrary to what we think we know I am sure the staff has a recruitment board and a strategy they are putting 100% into executing on. Give the guys a chance. We played hard last year but we were not a representation of the system BU has had great success with at his previous stops.
