We better hope that Wilkes takes all his planned visits, because if he suddenly stops, it will not be Illinois. I believe I had mentioned before but I had talked to a coach on the AAU circuit and his statement was that Wilkes will definitely take his visit to IU. That was before he started taking visits. Without much clarification, I took that statement to mean that IU led in that recruitment at that time.

My guess, independent of his statements, is that IU will roll the red carpet on his visit. Wilkes is fully aware that IU is indeed recruiting other players at the position. Assuming that IU does not accept another highly regarded player at SF before his visit (my guess is they will not), they will make a big push for him to commit, pretty much say "we are 100% on you, you are the top priority, you decide to commit right now, we stop recruiting everyone else at that position."

So IMO it will be a huge test what Wilkes does on and after his IU visit.

Agree with most of what you say. Our best shot at Wilkes is that Crean is not that popular with his family. Crean, I'm sure, will put on a great act while they are there, though.

Anyone know if Fletcher measures the standing verticals, drop step verticals, or max verticals for the guys? I ask because the numbers could be deceiving. It's like box jumps, sure you just jumped on top of a box 6 feet high, but that doesn't mean you have a 72 inch vertical which some people equate it to. Box jumps are about flexibility as much as how high you can jump.

I think most things I've seen around high school, college and the NBA combine is standing and max. That seems to be the standard.

The numbers we are seeing on Twitter are vertical jumps. However, I'm sure he keeps track of other numbers as he did briefly mention Thorne maxing out on the max vertical.

Wilkes said he will probably also visit IU for Hoosier Hysteria on Oct. 22nd.

To a non-insider, it looks like a 2 horse race (VCU and us) for Kiir. Is NC State out? No other strong contenders? Not discounting VCU, but like our chances if they're our main competition.

NC State is getting his first OV, so I'd say they're probably not out just yet.

Kiir would be a huge get. He can get minutes right away and definitely push black and Finke. This to me is the piece that can cap a top 10 class for JFG. Wilkes would be a huge get obviously, but we desperately need bigs. Kiir is a 4 year player too.

If we end up with Kiir and don't fill the 6th scholarship, it will be a top-10 class in our hearts, but probably not according to the ranking services. We'd finish with the following (composite rankings):

#25 - Jeremiah Tilmon
#102 - Trent Frazier
#107 - Da'Monte Williams
#146 - Mayan Kiir
#242 - Javon Pickett

That's one top-100 player (a 5-star big man, so it's obviously a huge deal), two 4-star guards, a borderline 3/4-star big, and a 3-star wing. Great class, huge for us, but according to the 247 class calculator (for whatever it's worth), it would put our class around #18 based on the last three years.

To get a top-10 class, we'd have to add Kigab, Wilkes, or a real surprise like Eastern. Kigab would probably put us in the 9 to 11 range; Wilkes would put us in the 5-7 range. Just goes to show how much talent the top programs bring in every year: even if we finished up with Wilkes and Jacob Epperson, we'd still be at the back end of the top-5 in the final class rankings. To compete with Duke, UK, KU, et al, we'd have had to reel in a class like Tilmon, Goodwin, Scruggs, Wilkes, Bowen, and Xavier Tillman (just drawing from our list of targets).

How dare you bring such unbiased perspective into the message board! :D

Seriously though, the class you list with Kiir is certainly the most likely. From that class you've really just got one player that is sure to elevate the talent level on the team. The other guys are more cross your fingers guys. One or two might turn into good B1G players, a couple probably won't. For 95% of college programs, recruiting a guy and crossing your fingers is pretty much the norm.

Yeah, exactly. I'd be stoked with that class. I'm thrilled with how the recruiting season has gone (even though I was really hoping for a second top 50-ish player to go with Tilmon). However, truthfully it's just a ho-hum class compared to how MSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Maryland, and Indiana have done recently. Purdue, Wisconsin, Penn State, and Iowa have also each had comparable classes overall this decade. It's a good, solid class, but pretty standard in the scope of things. You just hope that one of Frazier, DMW, and Pickett turns out to be an all-conference caliber player.

Kiir

Cannot believe this guy is not ranked higher after watching some clips. Long, fast, and better ball handling skills than I've seen on any Illini big men.

He didn't seem all that intrigued or knowledgeable about the program, or any programs for that matter :D

Yeah I noticed that too. I think this is a testament, then, to the relationship our staff has built with LaLu. Obviously speculating, but I'm thinking they must have a bug in his ear about our program.

I miss the Peoria pipeline, but a LaLu pipeline would suit me just fine.

Or a Chicago pipeline. =PPP

I'm not so concerned where we rank, I'm glad that we are filling our needs (PG and Bigs) and getting players that fit the coaches system. We have landed a true PG and a combo who can play PG. I think we need one more freshmen big man, would take Kiir or Epperson or both.
