RyanK lurking anywhere -- I know you had previously said we had no shot at Scruggs or Wilkes.. Obv you were right on with Scruggs.. do you think the visit with Wilkes at least gives us a chance?

I wouldn't say we had no chance with Scruggs. Once we got Frazier we stopped recruiting Scruggs. I wouldn't say we have ZERO chance with Wilkes, but I definitely think it is a slim chance.

Usually I'd hope recruits take their ranking w/ a grain of salt, but I hope Pickett is taking notes. 242? Really?

There's an article out there from mid July by Alex Bozich of Inside the Hall that quotes Wilkes as saying he wants to finish his Senior year @ North Central before making a college decision in the Spring.

Another almost top-50 ranking for Epperson. Would love to land that kid.

Edit: Nm, thought he was #57 in the 247 rankings, but it's just composite; still unranked by 247.

I doubt that happens. His ranking, scheduled visits, and schools involved clearly point to a much earlier decision.

I'm glad to see that Groce has the visit to Wilkes scheduled this week. Previously the others all did, but not us. It would be understandable if we did not given the proximity in time to his OV and that our OV already happened. And 247 actually updated to add it to the timeline.

Right. Just because that was said...doesn't mean it will play out that way. If that was the case, we'd still be waiting on Goodwin for his birthday in October. :(

Not connected to this recruitment at all, so take FWIW, but my guy says "no chance" with Wilkes. Maybe just his educated guess but thought I would pass on.

Mine also says that but, Twitter follows mean something in recruitments.

Well, I would think that too. But I gotta assume that, for some reason or another, the staff has been given the impression they have a shot or they wouldn't be putting in all the effort and time. I would like to think that somewhere someone among the staff would be able to identify a kid that didn't have genuine interest. I don't think Wilkes is wasting his time coming for a visit either or having the coach into his home for a visit. If he had no real interest, why not take the visit to the University of Hawaii or Arizona State or someplace like that and say no thanks to the coach hanging out at your house?

Theo John to Marquette. McKinley Wright to Dayton. I like the fit for both.

We may not have a shot for Wilkes but he seems really quiet about his recruitment. JCL we had no shot according to a lot as well and he is here. Not saying he is going to come here but I wouldn't take and say 0 chance. Maybe offer his gf a scholarship this week and hope he likes the idea enough to sway him

Where is this offering Wilkes gf a scholarship talk coming from? Is she good enough to be offered by Bollant or is this just some of the IL posters doing some wishful thinking?

#441
I don't know if she is good enough or not. It worked for djax so figured why not try it and see.

Apples to oranges. It's one thing for a coach to offer a friend/sibling/significant other a scholarship for the same sport because he's in charge of that team. Totally different to ask another coach to prioritize a player they might not want/doesn't fit on their team. That would essentially be Groce telling Bollant "The results of my team are more important than the results of your's." While that is probably true in the grand scheme of things it just seems sort of disrespectful.

Groce might not tell Bollant that, but an AD trying to get a revenue sport back on track might tell Bollant that.

Nojel eastern

I see that porkchop has an in home with eastern, as does the Buckeyes. I sure hope he doesn't end up haunting the Illini the next 4 years

Am I the only one who doesn't believe this is how it actually went down, notwithstanding the quotes about being a difficult conversation?

Ben Howland and Miss. State offered Mayan Kiir today after an open gym visit. Now that makes for an interesting competition partner for Groce.

we didn't stop recruiting Scruggs till we got some very good news from not one but 2 in 2018 that plus having Trent let JG make the decision to go after more important needs

Why would the Scruggs camp go along with the story of Illinois saying "no thanks" if it wasn't true? What incentive would they have to do that?

That alone is why I believe the narrative that says Illinois broke up with Scruggs, rather than vice versa.

What was this good news exactly? A silent verbal? [emoji1]
