If we don't end up with at least 2 of Ayo/Castleton/Nolley/THT/BPJ/Conditt than this class is a major bust.

I'd break that down a bit and say if we don't end up with one from each group of Ayo/THT/Nolley and Castleton/BPJ/Conditt then its a big disappointment. I don't know that I'd call it a 'major bust', time will tell.

If they get Ayo it is not a bust.

+1

Plus it just isn't going to happen. I'm confident we will get one of Colin, Kisunas, or BPJ and hopeful we get THT or Nolley.

Don't care about big George. He might eventually be great, but I personally wouldn't over sign for him (unless the staff has info that Black or Finke are leaving for a Euro pay check after the season). I would take him only if I didn't think I could get any of the other 3.

Has there been any recent info on Penn Johnson and Illinois other than just a cryptic "yes" here?

I haven't seen it, and I have looked. Only info is that 247 has UI as 1 of 5 teams "warmer".

Ayo = good recruiting year
Ayo + 1 = strong recruiting year
Ayo + 2 = exceptional recruiting year
Without Ayo, we need 3 recruits to have a strong recruiting class, 2 would be good.

This class is important with respect to building for the future, but it's not critical (assuming next year we hold on to Finke and Black). If we whiff this year, including next spring, then next year becomes critical. On the other hand, a strong class this year strengthens the program across the board and creates a positive PR image.

Nearly October 1st and we have yet to nab even one recruit. And, several of our targets have already signed. Yes, I'm getting a little nervous. My take is that both Groce and Underwood work very hard at recruiting. I just hope the latter is more successful.

This "new" recruiting tactic of waiting until late fall or spring to sign players tends to put us in the same category as the blue bloods, yet we are no longer in their league (as we were in the 1980's and early 2000's.)

Here's hoping things work out. I'll be content if we get:

1. Ayo/THT
2. Nolley
3. Castleton

Anything more will be a Ben Zobrist double in the 10th inning of game 7!!! Anything less will be a bit of a disappointment.

Why keep it a secret? If you are sure, then Ho shad and announce. It's not like Blacksburg is USC, ucla or an ov to Hawaii?

Not directed at you, I get your point. Just not why the wait, assuming of course the psa knows where he is going.

Can someone please translate this post into English for me? Sorry for being dense.

Who? Aside from no one signing anywhere yet, how many of our legit targets have committed elsewhere now?

This is what strikes me as especially odd about this recruiting season. We've signed nobody, but so far we have yet to receive a firm "NO" from anybody.

When does it ever work like that?

Arrggh, I edited my post several times, and managed to edit whatever sense it contained right out of it.

We've landed no one, but no one we've seriously recruited has committed elsewhere. We've made offers to players who've committed to other teams, but our core group of targets seems pretty much intact to date.

Darius Days? DJ Stewart? Silvio De Sousa?
Iggy, Sow, Gordon, Ramey........and the list is getting longer.

I'm just sayin', we were initially targeting some highly talented players who have chosen other schools. BTW, I'm glad we're chasing those highly rated players. I just want to get more than our fair share of them.

I think Sow might be the one exception here. Did any of the others even pay an unofficial visit to us?

I would agree, yet extend it to 3 of them...with resources spent, plan in place for style of play, and time for getting commits to actually pull the trigger, then I would say we need 3 from this group or its a bust.:chief:

VT made Nolley a Snapchat filter for his visit. He's noted it on Twitter. Hmm. Do we know anyone that will do that for us when Ayo is in town? Or is that tacky?

BOOM! Feed my ego.
Get Ayo and the rest is gravy. Aim higher, obviously. But he's the prize and the centerpiece. It's possible to still have a great class without him, but you're guaranteed to have a great class with Ayo and _______.

I think you will find whenever you go after high level recruits Top 150 or better you are going to make offers to far more players than you will sign. You are way more likely to easily and quickly sign lower ranked players. Some of the best will go elsewhere , some you will cool on, and the group narrows until you and the recruits meet each others expectations. I will be disappointed if we dont get three of our top 5 targets (AYO, CC , LN, GC, THT) but I feel positive that we will.

I agree with this, but i don't think we need to go to DEFCOM 3 because of how the recruiting year has gone. We spent a majority of late last cycle trying to throw together a respectable class, which i think given the time to compile, was pretty impressive. we didn't have the luxury to start early on this season.

But to say we've already missed on several key targets is just outright wrong. Most of the names i saw on listed on my response are all guys we took fliers on. Iggy was not coming here unless he reclassified to 17. These are the things people with tunnel vision around here fail to see.

Also, I'll say this again, to those who pander over how much "drama" there is in this recruiting class, you all have just no idea. No. Idea.

Don't you think when we're cut off someone's list, or they commit elsewhere, that's a firm "No" (Aaron Henry - and others)?

Edit - i later noticed you clarified.
