But what really separates Scheyer, from say Collins? Besides Chris’ dad was a great coach also?

Maybe he’ll do well, but none of the other guys have.

and for the, “it’s Duke so they’ll be good no matter what crowd”, I’m sure that’s what everyone thought after Wooden at UCLA and you know they thought that to the east after knight.
We don’t know what separates Scheyer, but we do know Duke could have called Collins, Wojo, Dawkins, or frankly just about any coach in the country and had them on the next flight to Durham. They didn’t. They handed the job to Scheyer w/o hesitation.
I hate the logic behind “none of the other guys from Duke were all that hot as coaches, so this guy has no chance” type of take. He is a different person.
The track record of Coach K’s coaching tree will have nothing to do with whether or not Scheyer can maintain that momentum.
At least the “It’s Duke, so they will be good no matter what” is grounded in something tangible. A national brand, top notch facilities, & a rabid fan base all around the country. Those are advantages very few 1st time coaches enjoy.
Not saying Scheyer is going to keep them at the top of the food chain, I have no idea. He’s going to have every opportunity to do so.

UCLA isn’t what it was, but it hasn’t exactly fallen off the map either….

UCLA has had great runs to be sure, but they haven’t sustained anything for more than five years at a time since John left. That’s great that Duke tabbed Scheyer. I just can’t see how you’d feel confident a guy that’s never ran any program on his own is now ready to step right into one of the top 5 jobs in America. Will be interesting.

WHAT'S THE LATEST ON CAM WHITMORE?

Easily one of the hottest prospects in the class of 2022, Cam Whitmore rose from all the way outside the top 100 to near five-star status in our most recent update to the rankings for his class.

A 6-foot-6 powerhouse of an athlete with a relentless competitive spirit, Whitmore is officially down to a final 10 of Florida, Georgetown, Illinois, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State and Villanova. During June he was able to see Georgetown, Maryland, Penn State and Villanova. At a minimum Illinois, Miami and North Carolina should be getting official visits from him after the summer ends.

The one thing that everybody I have spoken with can agree upon is that Whitmore and his family are pretty straightforward people and that his recruitment is one without many outside or complicating influences.

My assessment is that it is just to early to declare a leader. I wish I had more, but there just hasn't been much intel leaking about where Whitmore could end up.

In MANY ways....this new staff is KILLIN' IT! And I'm glad we are going after players from New York. (without OA!)

I don't necessarily disagree, but the North Carolina brand and institutional advantages weren't strong enough for a similarly inexperienced Matt Doherty. And unlike UNC, there isn't a surefire hire ready to swoop in to save the alma. Who knows, a few so-so years under Scheyer followed by a mediocre hire and suddenly they're 10 years past their glory days. Or well, a boy can hope.
