Which elite 2023 prospects should top programs call first?

ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI

Brad Underwood has gone under a staff change but will be looking to continue his success on the recruiting trail and he has one elite talent down the road - J.J. Taylor. The top ten 2023 prospect out of Chicago has solidified himself early not just as one of the best talents and prospects in the class but also one of the best scorers.

The 6-foot-8, 185-pound small forward landed an offer from the Illini last August and will be a top target for them early.

Another primary target will be Jeremy Fears, another Illinois native playing for La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere. A 6-foot-1, 165-pound floor general who is tough, competitive and one of the best facilitators in the class. He has outstanding vision, feel and is a pesky on-ball defender who currently ranks as the No. 23 overall prospect in the class.

A third prospect to keep an eye on here will be Matas Buzelis, a 6-foot-8 small forward who is AAU teammates with Taylor.

That's the fine. People who are worried about this becoming a mercenary free for all need to remember that the risk highlighted here will help guard against that.
That stat also tells you nothing about why those players don't have a new team. The NCAA isn't exactly falling over itself to make data available, but the best (outdated) numbers I could find show that 40 percent of players don't make it more than two years with their initial team, and that about 14 percent of all players each year wind up transferring. Even if you make the really aggressive assumption that all transfers happen within the subset of players who are leaving after their first or second years, you've got, what, like a quarter of players leaving and not playing D-I ball again?

I'm sure that some -- or likely, a lot -- of the players who wind up leaving basketball entirely are entering into the portal as a perfunctory matter and aren't actually looking for new teams. And in any event, there's nothing definitive here that links the portal to players 'not finding another team.' Not that good ol' Jon or the NCAA have a narrative that they're pushing or anything, right?

Typical Rees Woodcock article:

Title: 7 Recruits Illinois are Prioritizing

Body:
3 players that have committed elsewhere
2 players that are top 10 but have used all OVs on blue bloods
2 players that actually make sense but aren't our A/B options

Content:
Full of words devoid of purpose and/or information. Basically copies previous article and changes names, numbers, and pictures and submits a new article.

I don’t understand why he isn’t more interested in us if he isn’t getting his guy hired anywhere. He would be a sure fire starter here and make us a top 20 or better team.
Could be anything. When I was college-aged, I might have preferred warm weather and the outdoor parties at a FL state school, especially after winters in Amherst. Some of their campus buildings look like 1960s USSR.

Texas is going to ranked with Beard coaching and Florida State has been pretty good the last few years and have gotten a few players drafted. Not to mention the weather in those 2 places. He is going to start anywhere. With that being said, there is a big need for him here.
