I’ve known about it for a little while … Just didn’t want to put it out there until after the season out of respect to all parties involved.

Kenny has a long list of candidates but TA is definitely up near the top.
Sounded like the checkbook was open for BU and staff to stick together this year. the Louisville situation seems like a death sentence for TA.

Do we have any contract terms for Asst. Coaches to deter poaching and such (buy-out clauses, etc.)?
And if not, after last year, seems like something we should implement regardless whether it's customary or not. 🤷‍♂️
I’m sure there’s some sort of buy-out. Doesnt stop Louisville from calling. Don’t think TA leaves for Louisville unless there’s something else going on behind the scenes. I know Louisville is a big East power, but they’ve got a lot of issues going on and he is in a spot at Illinois where he’d be job hopping a bit - which while maybe not as important for coaching, probably not great and I’m sure it doesn’t help recruiting when you don’t stay somewhere for more than a year or 2 and then bolt.

There is something else. Relationship with Payne.

From what I’ve heard TA should stay as long as we open up the checkbook, which I fully expect

We need more athletes. Look at all the major conferences. The base level of athleticism is lower in the big ten than anywhere else. ACC, SEC, Big XII, PAC, are leagues of athletes. Big Ten has very good basketball players but so do those conferences.

You can see the speed and quickness differences in these games where it’s B1G vs another major conference team.

Would think Louisville wouldn’t be attractive with the looming sanctions as it would make it less attractive to recruits. But maybe aspiring NBAers who are only viewing college as a 1-2 year stop gap don’t care about playing in the NCAAT.

And I realize that recruiting at this level is national and TA will pull a fair number of meanstreets kids wherever he is, but IL is rolling pretty good and our proximity to Chicago has to be advantage as he can get to most games, schools etc at under 3 hours

Doesn’t mean he wouldn’t use it as leverage to get a bump (I would), but on the surface would seem like TA would have to put his relationship with Payne over his career. Hope he stays. We will see.

I look at RJ, CoHawk and our inbound recruits and see that changing. BU has a clear template and we get to see that coming together next year.

I love Trent, DMFW, and Kofi for life, but the kids have more length and athleticism. It's going to be exciting to watch.

Belo is a Magician...more playmakers that he can feed to are on their way
To be 100% honest, Belo is a step above almost all our players. Not only with his vision, but his abilities. I love Kofi, don't get me wrong. But better hands and Curbelo type passes end up in dunks. And it's not just Kofi. We need better athletes, which I saw in another post. And I don't blame Kofi, he's been playing for what 6 years. He's grown a ton! But we need athletes with hands. You give Belo 3-5 of those guys and nobody stops us. Melendez might be one of those guys. Hawkins potentially as well. Thinking guys in next year's class might fit the bill as well.

Yeah I don't see Louisville finishing near the top (or bottom) of the big east any time soon

If it was a true blue blood or a HC job maybe, but think he is smarter and didn’t choose to come to Illinois without every intention of staying at least a few years. I don’t blame him if he leaves, as I’m sure he would have his reasons, I just don’t see it happening.

That part is exciting to think about, and I see it changing too. I’m hopeful we can develop them into great shooters and tight basketball players overall.

But as I’m still a little negative from todays loss, think about RJ who is probably our best athlete, and figure out where he would rank on Houston, or Texas Tech etc. Maybe mid level on those teams?

Watching MSU today, it struck me that if RJ had been given the same PT all year as Max Christy, I think he would have been at least as productive (9.3PTS, 3.5 Rebounds, 37.9 FG% in 31 mins a game) as Max was this season and possibly more. Really excited to see how RJ develops. Edit: For comparison RJ's stats this season: 3.6PTS, 1.7 Rebounds, 54.3% FG% in 8 mins a game.
