Why would anyone pay tuition when a free ride is out there? I bleed O & B but I wouldn’t be against my kid leaving Illinois for a free ride at a good school - and I can afford tuition but why would I pay if my kid can get a free ride at a comparable school?
The kid gets no say in where he goes?

Not everyone just takes whatever is free. It’s not like you are comparing the price of 2 apples. There are other factors besides money

Not for many people.

Why would anyone pay tuition and room and board at a school where their kid doesn’t play at all when he can actually get experience and play elsewhere?

If he were my kid I’d see if he could get a free ride at Northwestern, Vandy, Colgate, Stanford, etc. and actually play and get a great degree, arguably better than U of I (my undergrad is from U of I).

If you can find a comparable school. He likely is not going to start or play much at a P5 so it would be a mid-major. How many of those have an academic reputation to match illinois?

The thing about Ty is even if the shot isn’t there he really seems like a guy who can at least attack off the bounce and/or create for others at the wing position. RJ is the only one we have at the moment who can do that.
I think Belo can attack and get to the rim but the issue is he just seems to miss more lay ups than he makes. He seems to get to the rim in transition with ease but misses lay ups.

Let's lay off the kid. I'm not comparing him to Dee, but I remember Dee not being able to hit a layup to save his life his freshman year. Every player grows at a different pace.

And if your kid is enjoying themselves even if they aren’t playing in the games?

Not everyone is trying to go pro. Some of them simply enjoy playing. If he has great chemistry with his teammates there, I highly doubt you would make your kid leave his school when you have that kind of money. Idc if he would get playing time or a better degree elsewhere - he chose Illinois for a reason didn’t he? Don’t think PT was the first priority for him.

Maybe you would force your kid to go to the college you think is best for what you want them to do/be, but not all parents do that. And even if they say they won’t pay because he could get a free ride elsewhere, nothing stopping him from taking out student loans.

Really think it’s a bit obtuse to suggest that how much you pay for tuition and playing time in games Are the ONLY factors for these kids.

Sometimes I swear you just drop these in here to see how fast the forum spirals out of control.

Think today you’ve got them to defcon 4.

I’ve known about it for a little while … Just didn’t want to put it out there until after the season out of respect to all parties involved.

Kenny has a long list of candidates but TA is definitely up near the top.

Wasn't like that last year. We never got to see the real Curbelo this year with missing several games and practices this year because of injuries and illness. Everyone saw what was coming this year till those things happened. Thats why he was a preseason All American.

I wasn’t intending to suggest I don’t believe you, more pointing out the hysteria that goes on here. Good assistant coaches have connections throughout college basketball, which means they get brought up a lot when coaches get hired. I’m not worried until something happens

Coleman obviously has potential but im a little more skeptical on the odds of him reaching it since he didnt improve his shot much this year and his IQ lacks at times but you never know.

Hawkins can be an enigma but his shot improved significantly from last year to this year:

2020-21: 34.5% FG / 43.8% 2PT / 25.0% 3PT
2021-22: 45.0% FG / 55.7% 2PT / 29.5% 3PT

I am not attacking him. I took up for him. Someone said the only players that can attack the basket is RJ and I said it's not true! What do you think Belo would say about if he did a good job finishing at the rim or shooting 3s. I think that would be two of the things he would say he must improve on and I think he can. I'm not attacking him. He is well aware of it too and he is awesome at getting to the rim and that's the hard part

Think it's great that you did that - but it makes you wonder if Anderson has this on his mind, if BU has K-State on his mind (just a little), various kids have transferring on their minds, just unfortunate to me that this all happens at the most important time of the season when we need 100 percent focus on winning and advancing in the NCAAs.

And we certainly aren't the only school dealing with distractions like this, just wish there was a way the timing was different.

Unless he is told they don't see a place for him anymore. Read, we need your scholly for someone who will be in the rotation.
Don't see it. They can't rescind his scholly . All they can do is tell him that his role is limited (and he already knows that). Ride it out. Get your free degree and benefit from your Illini network.

Do we have any contract terms for Asst. Coaches to deter poaching and such (buy-out clauses, etc.)?
And if not, after last year, seems like something we should implement regardless whether it's customary or not. 🤷‍♂️
