As someone who works the high school side of the college application process, all schools, even Illinois, already make exceptions. Some (not Illinois) make more than others.

Edit: when compared to non-athletic admissions. They still have to pass the clearinghouse
Do they actually admit below the minimum or do they just bypass the pool of applicants such that as long as they meet minimum they get accepted? Not sure if you know, but I imagine most schools, especially Illinois, denies applicants regularly that meet the “minimum” qualifications.

I think there's a huge difference between playing with a point guard who is 6' and playing with 3 players who are smaller than the people they're guarding - especially 2-4. I've enjoyed St. Peters run but don't know that their size is something we want to emulate. I think it's hard to argue that we don't need to get bigger 1-4. Looks like BU agrees and is acting accordingly. This board is bad for me this time of year. I should just wait to see who suits up in the fall but I do so so so many things that are bad for me... why stop here?

The Beloved cancelled their annual Kiwanna club BB Banquet because could not assure player attendance. Definitely seems to indicate some chemistry issues and significant transfers coming soon in my opinion.,,,, or else you are there for your coach, team, University and community. This is life in the portal.
I find the cultural dynamics that the current environment creates interesting, and somewhat unfortunate. If you know that transferring is difficult, then you're likely to do what's necessary to build and maintain relationships within the team. It's a weak form of the commitment required to compromise in a marriage. Otherwise, indulging in the "grass is greener" fantasy, which can keep a player from being moored to the reality of the need to develop and sacrifice, is attractive, even though it may be self-defeating. (What 19-year-old has an undistorted view of himself and impeccable judgement about how to make decisions without constraints on him?) Then again, I'm all for decreasing NCAA exploitation of these athletes.

Depends on the kid and the school. Bottom line is that they need to pass the NCAA Clearinghouse first, so they need at least a 2.3 GPA in core courses. Not clearing that is a non-starter.

If they do, then likely a matter of what program they're applying to within the school. For example, Engineering and Business are going to have stricter entrance requirements than other colleges. Students are steered by their academic advisors toward majors that will allow for admissions and fits with their sport's practice schedule. Strings are pulled. (Note: I cannot speak to Illinois specifically. The one student I had who briefly had interest from them was quickly ruled out by the Clearinghouse.)

Doesn't mean student-athletes don't end up in those colleges or more competitive programs, but it takes a lot of foresight on their part. That's the difficult thing, even if you do manage to grab them as freshmen and explain how it works. Too many people think amazing athletes get in regardless, but while some things are made easier, it's not a sure thing.

Before anyone suggests as much, I'm not trying to slander our players. I'm sure they're hard working students who have earned their spot. Just keep in mind that admissions is more complex than GPA and ACT/SAT score. Where you go to school, what's offered, other things you've done, and what major you're applying to all matter; with athletics, talent and how much the coach wants a player is just another thing that factors into the decision.

any idea when news might come of an exit. Was told that was the first dominoe but I haven’t seen anything official at this point.

They do make exceptions, but the university has to have at least some programs those athletes can progress in. Otherwise, you’re making something up, UNC style. I’d rather see unsuccessful teams than see the university sacrifice its academic integrity.

—> Some of these kids might not be as good at math as some of the others getting admission into the UofI, but they have a skill set that is world class.

They’re 10x better at basketball than the common “good student” is at math.

The UofI is an institution of higher learning. Mastering the game of basketball should fall under that definition.

think this common misconception is driven by advisors/parents/coaches that identify such talent and have the foresight to make sure they set themselves up to make it through the clearinghouse. Probably why you don’t hear about it much - I imagine it’s one of the first things any recruiting team makes sure is in alignment to requirements - 1) for top players there are a lot of people involved to make sure they take classes that don’t get in the way of the end goal (and I’m sure to some degree, they manipulate the GPA side, fund extra tests etc) and 2) the next tier of athletes don’t want to limit their options by not qualifying academically.

Still takes some foresight, but I even remember academics coming up when I was working with NCSA recruiting site back when I was considering college ball and coaches I met with brought it up as well.

We all witnessed chemistry challenges during the season. Body language and verbal interactions among coaches and players says a lot, whether or not people want to accept it. It is what it is.

While many speculate here, I’d say nothing would surprise me in the way the team tapered off down the stretch, injuries being a catalyst placing more demands on individual play.

That said, BU is a problem solver and will maximize to minimize damage.

One big question is - what happens with Kofi?

* Enter the portal, not enter the portal
* Go with an agent for the NBA, not go with an agent
* Stay an Illini for another year, not stay an Illini
* Go with a European team, not go with a European team
* Etc.

Seems we watched this for several months prior to the season starting, holding the roster in suspense. Standby for more to come...
I don't see Kofi going to the NBA. His game just isn't a fit for the current needs of a NBA center. I also don't see him in the portal. Either he stays or goes to Europe.

It's one of the things school counselors try to tell students as freshmen, too, since those are the only grades colleges will look at (they won't go back to middle school), but a lot of kids and families just don't get it.

The coaches I've had the pleasure of working with have been phenomenal about talking about academic requirements. I always appreciate it when they get in on the act.

I respectfully disagree. Basketball is not an academic pursuit.

To be fair, the university is not it's own worst enemy when it comes to admissions. It may be athletics' worst enemy, but not the university's as a whole. I do, however, wish they would find a way to 'make exceptions' in some athletic instances. Although, once that door is opened for just athletics, it never gets shut again.
That door is likely open for other prospective students with special talents or skills that enhance the University's prestige.

When is the banquet usually? If it was while we had our covid issues, I'd just as soon assume that it was more about health than chemistry.
