He needs to work on those 5-10 footers in addition to his outside shot. I think his shooting motion looks pretty good. It's a matter of repetition and muscle memory. 10s of thousands of jump shots in the off-season. Plummer-style practice regimen.

He also needs to work on being more decisive out there. If you're going to take it to the hoop, go hard. If you're going to stop for a 8-foot jumper, then stop and get a good base and let muscle memory take over.

I think he can be really good, but there's work to do. And to me, he seems like the kind that's willing to work at his game.
I love his aggression... but he seems to drive with no plan for execution of it...also not processing quick enough for what to do once there. And the up fake...

You’re welcome for starting the Coleman Hawkins train
I am happy we have Hawk. I think he can be a very good college player for us if he improves to close to 36 percent plus from three. The fact is he shot 23 and 29 percent from three and hopefully will improve. Currently I do not see Hawk as some of you do. I think he needs to be able to score more consistently in all three levels. I dont see an NBA player or an all B10 guy like some of you. I think Hawk can have a big impact but as our third, forth best player or scorer. His biggest impact will be on D, the boards, and a third, fourth, or fifth leading scorer

I think the need for Hawkins to vastly improve his outside shot is a bit over-blown. Houston was daring him to shoot, but he was on the court with DMW, Kofi, and Curbelo quite a bit in that game. None of those dudes wanted to shoot. If he is out there with some combination of RJ, Goode, Podz, TSJ, & freshman PG to be named the ball will find a shooter before the defense can recover from the Kofi double/triple team.

That said, if he wants to get to the NBA the three is absolutely imperative. I think he can be an effective player at this level w/o making a huge leap outside.
Teams will always help more off the guy who can’t shoot.

The other guys don’t usually leave their shooters, at most they stunt at the ball (Coleman in this scenario) and recover to their shooters to force him to hesitate on a decision. In that hesitation, his man can meet him as he recovers from the double or help.

If he decided to shoot, the defense usually accepts that trade off by helping off a non shooter.

It doesn’t always work the clean or simple, but that’s usually what a scouting report defense will look to do if everyone follows their assignments.

This. He needs a go to move. Then he can build his game off of that.

Coleman is 6'10 athletic with good handles. . He can drive to the hoop and take 5-10 footers anytime he wants.

The problem is he either can't hit that shot or won't take it.

He does not need to shoot 3's to contribute to our offense. He just needs to score!
I would like to see him score more at the rim over people and in traffic with contact along with the 5-10ft pull-up jumpers.

If you are left unguarded, wide open by a team like Houston over and over it's because they picked their poison. The fact is Hawk shot 23 and 29 percent the last two seasons from 3. You can't blame his teammates when he had wide open looks! He along with Curbelo are who they decided to sag off of and cover Kofi. I dont understand your justification of Hawk taking and missing open looks. He was benched for RJ and Goode due to poor shooting from three. We need more shooting from the 4 spot next year that is for certain. Jake was clearly hurt and it had a massive impact. We need to recruit a stretch 4. Does Hawk have potential? Yes, he does but he is a long way from the NBA or a player like Brian Cook who many here act like he is.

With the addition of Rodgers who has the potential to play decent-big minutes next year but is also a non-shooter, Hawkin’s need for shot development should be a priority if he plans to play next to Rodgers and Kofi in specific lineups.

Hawkins shot is to flat, needs more arc to be effective from any range.

Speaking of guys and their shots... Kofi gets a lot of grief for his shooting away from the basket.

What he DIDN’T get enough credit for was his dramatic improvement in free-throw technique and percentage.

Big men have got to put in the time to develop a good free throw style. They are going to get fouled... and They cannot allow themselves to be a liability at the end of games because they can’t nail key free throws. Or just be bench-sitters at Crunch Time.

And if he has learned better free-throw technique, he could learn to be a much better shooter from 12-feet in. That would have NBA teams drooling. And a nice payday for him.

Would be nice to see Kofi's big smile lighting up NBA arenas. Especially the one on West Madison Street.

Can drive and take 5 to 10 footers whenever he wants? Sure, the problem is they are not good shots for him. He is not Glen Big Dog Robinson. He has skill and is getting better but putting in an Illini jersey doesn't make him someone he isn't. He just needs to continue to work and get better and be a good third or fourth option for our beloved. If some of you expect him to be an NBA type 4 land leader like we or other teams have had in the past then I feel your orange Kool aid may be spiked. Hawk can be a key part for our team to be what it can be.

And probably our best offensive rebounder. He gets back up in the air so quickly. My guess is his shooting percentage will be going up with the confidence factor, AND the normal big jump from soph to junior....jmho

Be me yesterday, catching up on the thread only to discover at least two references to my high school, the era I attended, and several bars where I was a regular.

Talk about good fortune.
