Yeah, but we’ve been to two Final Fours (and gotten FOUR #1 seeds) since their last Final Four … I think, based on reading their boards occasionally, their psychological hurdle is just making the final weekend.

With us? 2005 wasn’t THAT long ago … we’ve been to the Final Four EIGHT years more recently than Arizona, for example. But that Natty?? If we won the NC next year, we’d have 1 NC, 6 Final Fours and 32 NCAAT appearances, plus maybe a FIFTH #1 seed and our 19th Big Ten title. The lack of that NC keeps us in the neighborhood of Arkansas, Cincinnati and Oklahoma rather than Syracuse or Arizona historically, for many casual fans. Given our other VERY impressive historical stats, we’d literally jump from like 20th all-time to 12th overnight.

Add in the fact that we’ve had some heartbreaking near misses … and we WANT IT BAD! ;)
Arkansas has a National Championship sadly.

Agreed, Nick was the Gatorade player of the rear in Florida I as I recall. While he didn't play much in that 1 seed team he did eventually play quite a bit and t think started some. Also I am not saying I want Lieb to leave but if he did we could replace him that could fill that same role in practice and on the bench much like Dain did last year or new arrival could that and also could eventually develop and contribute on the court. They may even start one day. Wisconsin bigs have done that for years. Lieb may be able to get better and strong and actually do that. I wouldn't say anyone that never plays is "invaluable". A lot of what was discussed is what walk ons do.
'05 was his senior year. Also had essentially the same amount of PT as his freshman year. Then again, if you're 7'2" and want to play more, it would be helpful to shoot better than 40.6% from the field. 🤷‍♂️

I don't have any issues with him being here either. Someine has to fill that 13 scholarship and they dont need to play every year. I feel however that scholarship players should be developing and have the potential to get better and work there way to have an impact on the court in games over time. They should not just stay in that 13 spot in the rotation four years. I think Lieb can and may do this were he plays after Kofi is gone and is improving whether we see it or not. Big guys usually take time to add mass and get better. He did have some other good options out if high school to play. He decided to play here and work hard to hopefully one day play and get a good education while doing so. I dont think he came to fill that 13 spot in the rotation for four years nor do I expect him to. He will get better and graduate. If he improves enough to play then he will stay if not I imagine he may move in to work or transfer after graduation. Hopefully he has and will continue to make big steps in his development and be a effective in games his last year or two. ( He does have three years left due to covid right?)
Keep in mind with the extra year he could theoretically get his degree in 4 (or maybe 3 with summer school) and then transfer and still get a year or two of playing somewhere else if his opportunity doesn’t open up at Illinois.

This guy to me is perhaps the most exciting guy in the portal outside of the obvious guys.

With Curbelo officially gone, I assume the staff will want to bring in another PG. Sherfield or Ramey would make a lot of sense, assuming they are interested. I think if you compare them:

Scoring: Sherfield
Athleticism: Ramey
Defense: Ramey
Distribution: Sherfield

Unknown who would be the better mentor for our young guys. That could be a big factor, as would be willingness to take a complimentary role. I think either would be great if we could get them. Outside of Shannon and Miller, these look like the best guys available, imo.

Leaky Black announced he is returning to Carolina, who is a player in Shannon’s recruitment. However, they don’t have an open scholarship, and I’m not sure if they will be able to open one unless Love leaves, which I’m not sure on. Furthermore, Kentucky is out on Shannon. If Michigan is still having issues with transfer credits regarding Shannon, Illinois may be in a good spot to land him unless another team enters the mix.

I think i like Ramey of these. Sherfield is a volume scorer and we don't NEED that.

I believe you will see Ramey in an Illini uniform

I don't think it's that easy to say that. Ramey only appears to be a better 3 point shooter, but even there he's fluctuated a bit. Of course this conversation is only worth having if both players are interestd.

If you could get 2020-21 Courtney Ramey, you take that in a heartbeat.

Nick Smith always seemed to have the sniffles 🤔
Lol. I think you’re right…almost like he had the same cold all his life; and he just couldn’t shake it.

I also thought, nearly every time Zook and Weber spoke they were in need of a lozenge.

I would love to add some upperclassman NCAA tourney experience

PG - Ramey SR
2G - TSJ SR

Our team is very young - without Kofi returning only 20% of minutes from last year and one part time starter

freshman - Ty, Skyy, Jayden, Sencire
Soph -4 - Dain, Luke 4% , RJ 3%
Jr - 3 - Coleman 10% BBV 3% Lieb
SR - Kofi if he returns

In terms of team impact, this past year was Ramey's best. Didn't shoot the 3 as well but had a higher effective FG b/c he didn't miss all his 2s. Way lower TO%, best defensive numbers of his career. But he's leaving b/c he didn't like having his role diminished, even though he had a usage that was almost identical to Trent's this year. That is reason to make me hesitant to bring him in.
