Experience wins in college?

Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and UNC didn’t get the memo with rosters full of one and done talent
Jayhawks best player and leading scorer on this years championship team was a Sr.,plus Coleman Lands is a 6yr, Wilson a Jr, McCormicks 4th season too and other key experienced players. UK was not without veteran leadership this season.

In no surprise, Dennis Gates is taping his old MIF contacts and Miller may end up at Missouri.

Yep...uniquely seasoned Kansas team.
On bench NC game....they played bench 33 min to NC 20 min. They ran them out of gym in 2d half...even without deep Bench

When I watch highlights of new class I think no problem this year though we’re young. Then watched some videos of games with same players. Completely different picture when they miss shots, turnover the ball and get beat on defense. Not putting the recruits down but realizing why our expectations are frequently unrealistic on new players.

I agree this is going to be a challenge but personally think that it’s less difficult than year 1 and changing the defense. Probably around as difficult as adapting the O to Kofi’s strengths.
I believe the defense is changing again this year. Opposing teams have had to do a "U-turn" when entering the paint against us for the past 3 years. Kofi was an enormous, singular, defensive presence. Not sure, but speculating we may return once again to extreme pressure and trapping out front.

As a result, the offense may correspondingly change back to up-tempo and putting shots up early in the shot clock. Should be an exciting brand of basketball to entice the most talented players sitting out there in the portal.

I think it's interesting that people put so much stock in the one and dones and then point to Kentucky. They actually prove the opposite. Yes, Cal stacked some classes and got them a national title. But it really looks like his eschewing experience and stacking talent model is not working so well.

You need a balance.

And to be clear, we are inexperienced and lacking elite talent this season. Yes, it can all come together and yes there's time to get guys from the portal. But to date, quite a few players have been identified as having interest from our staff and we haven't landed any of them. just as we have appeared to get the HS recruiting going at a high level a new wrinkle in roster building has been thrown in that we're not yet proficient at.

I can agree to the inexperienced part of your comment but lacking elite talent? I think this may be one of the more talented teams we have had in quite some time.

I guess we'll see. What's the definition of "elite". I was posting in response to the person talking about one and dones. I don't think any of our guys are in that category. I don't think you look at any of them and say sure fire NBA talent. Skyy? certainly a chance. Don't know his actual size and injury impact.

How should we make sense of upcoming dates . . . Last day to declare for NBA Draft (April 24), last day to enter transfer portal (May 1), last day to remove name from NBA draft (June 1)? Does this mean that we may not have full list of players in transfer portal until June 1? @illini0440 @LvilleILL @IndyILL @DB11Headband

It’ll be clear before June
We for sure need more experience and talent. We have added some much better athletes and have some talent. That said we currently have only one player that started over 5 games on the roster. We can and must add some top level guys to provide leadership and experience against D1 level talent. We have some talented guys but certainly need some experience to go with it

I'm not sure that's the point of his question.

Let's take Christie. He's declared for the draft but is not in the portal. If he never declares for the portal prior to May 1 and drops out of draft on May 15 is he stuck with MSU? i'm thinking he is, but I don't know. So on May 2 we'll know which if the NBA draft guys could possibly end up as a possible transfer.

Plummer was okay, not arguing that. Even tho he was a liability on defense/the boards and had 43 TOs to 35 AST. He was still a good sharp shooter replacement. Payne was awful. And he was picked as the kofi replacement. Imagine if we had to role him and BBV out there all season. They were fine players. But were either of them nba combine types? Not really. And we were told to wait for others to leave the process and we’d make a run at them (Dawson Garcia, etc). I just think that one in hand is better than 2 in the bush at this point. I’m worried about the staff being overly confident when they have never landed an elite level transfer. Do you really think losing 80%+ of both scoring and minutes isn’t worrisome?
Usually there is a reason for transferring...helicopter parents...smoking...being late for practice...selfishness....not good enough for the level...kinda sounds like our transfers...sometimes BU is going to take a hard pass...how good did Mitchell or Garcia do? I think they are transferring again...We'll get some new tools soon enough.

The portal is technically just so players are immediately eligible…..he can transfer after the may 1st deadline just won’t be eligible to play without a waiver.

I prefer "uncertain" over worrisome. Agree on ideally mixing in experienced transfers.

This will be a significant test of BU and staff's ability to rapidly integrate new members and freshmen into starting lineup. BU Illini era hasn't seen this level of production turnover yet.....year 1 was likely close, and was complicated by installing his new system.

All that said, lot of talent but I do see uncertainty, and as a fanbase we will need to be patient (not sure that's possible though:)
Personally he kinda has already done that this last year with all the turmoil, concussions, suspensions, injuries, covid...5 new players....wonder how many different lineups he used...but agree gonna be a re-install year for sure.

I think BU will take either a PG or Wing that can shoot but won’t take both . I also believe Illini will take a 4/5 that can play both positions. If your hoping for an elite name then I wouldn’t get to hyped about that. I do believe both players will be extremely solid and will contribute. Most but not all these bigger names just want to talk NIL and BU wants guys who are thinking wins and team. I have full confidence in this staff to find the right fit and not just guys that have a lot of stars by their name and a group of people looking to cash in. I’m all for these guys getting $$$ but some of these guys entering the portal and thinking they’re going to get high 6 figures is disillusioned.

#49
There are a LOT of very talented players out there that are also looking for the same things this staff are looking for. It’s just going to take a little time for right guys/fit.

If you don’t meet deadlines yes...pretty simple.
