Lot of drama in AAU basketball and a lot of drama with the Irvins. Anderson=Meanstreets MIF=Irvins......Irvins always feel slighted if they don't get what they want.
The Irvins are terrible basketball coaches. I've consistently been baffled by how they could have so much talent on these AAU teams and never win anything. They usually majorly underperform. Looks like they're currently 0-8 and they really don't have anyone we want outside of JJ Taylor on the 17u team. He is Kentucky or Pro so I haven't wasted my thought much on him.

Meanstreets typically hasn't had the top talent, yet usually performs better. If Illinos's involvement can start getting more talent into their roster, will be interesting to see if they can win at a high level.

I thought I saw an article that said entire Illinois athletic program had couple hundred thousand in NIL last year but I cant find it. Only $ amount is $65k for campus ink t-shirts. I don't know how much Kofi got for OSF health care and TCCI mfg. These just don't seem to be type of companies that would be making 7 figure payouts to recruits/ahtletes.

You would need billionaires alums to step forward like - Tom Siebel, Larry Ellison, Shahid Kahn (owns Panthers) , Marc Andreesen, Martin Eberhard (Tesla cofounder). Jon Corzine (Goldman Sachs) Jeremy Stoppelman (YELP founder)

Kofi and DaMonte - local pediatrician

Andre -credit union

Plenty of others have already responded to this post in various forms, so I am going to take a different line:

The idea of Larry Ellison donating to an institution of higher learning makes me chuckle. Politics aside, I seem to recall he and the university had a falling out some years ago anyway. (That may have also been Peter Thiel, now that I think about it. Most of the comments are still valid, though.)

I feel like we are in a stage in the portal where the top guys are making big asks for minutes and $$$. BU isn't promising anyone anything other than a chance to come in and compete for minutes. I think our priorities are an experienced PG & depth at the 5. I'd wager a guy like Ramey isn't too keen on the idea of coming in and competing with a 5 star recruit for minutes. Experience might get him a leg up early, but as the season goes on, you could see a guy like that play fewer and fewer minutes. He isn't leaving Texas to play a bit part.
The talent we have gives us a heck of a ceiling already, but there are a lot of question marks regarding the floor when you have as many guys as we have who have not played significant minutes in their careers.
If we land an immediate impact player, my guess is it would be a big guy. At PG, I'd bet on an experienced player who is looking for a step up in competition, or a program with a better chance of winning.

(The contents of this post are based entirely on my own wild speculation)

Highly disagree. The Irvins would have defeated Loyola by 30.../s

Well, you're putting words in my mouth. I never said their alumni were more invested in BB than we are. My point is that their alumni overall are probably giving more than ours.

I don't think the Pack deal was a good deal and never said so.

I don't know what your definition of "good money" is, but Kofi, Curbelo, and Damonte were the only notable ad campaigns. It's very unclear how much we can put forward in NIL money. And it's unclear how we'll stack up with others.

Our alumni base definitely has the cash. I haven't seen much evidence of it being spent.
Disagree. Look at the money Whitman has been able to throw around that Mike Thomas and RG couldn’t! That’s donor money that he tapped into successfully.

We were matching every penny of KENTUCKY BASKETBALL’s budget for Antigua. Underwood brought us back from the dead and we ponied up more than many programs pay their football coaches … he’s the highest paid coach in the league and #7 in the country! We also apparently were prepared to make Kofi by far the richest basketball player in the Big Ten, from what is known.

I think the University of Illinois is finally spending like it’s the sole big state school of one of the biggest states in the nation! Our nightmares of the days when we operated like the penny-pinching, University of East Central Illinois are ancient history. :) Now just think of the positive snowball effect that could be achieved if BB gets football to the point of 55k+ at every home game and decent viewership numbers again … sky has always been the limit at Illinois, with only ourselves in the way at times.

Not doubting this, but seems to be a common theme with the university. Marc Andreessen is the one I recall having beef due to technology transfer fights.

Last year around this time a lot of people were upset about losing out on Tre Mitchell and Quincy Guerrier. Both of those "misses" went to veteran-laden teams (transfer-heavy) with good coaches and ended up underachieving, both as a team and individually. Things aren't always black and white. I wish some of y'all would let things play out a bit more before choosing to have a conniption fit.

although i understand the takes desiring more NIL$ transparency, i doubt it happens. salary details are almost always cloudy at best (to the benefit of ______)

Miami must have a plan, as they vocally set the precedent at 800k for their top players. imagine being a top player in the portal now and Miami says they can get you 400k.. and no car..

Some of you need to realize we aren't going to beg talent to come here anymore. We aren't in the Groce years anymore. We don't need to pine over every 4 star guy who might be interested in us....I can tell you the staff for sure isn't.
I thought groce had gold scholarships though.

I don’t think people are understanding of what happened. Go back and look at the tweet and responses from the account since. It’s a startup company. They wanted as many views on their social media as they could. Last night it had over 4Million impressions. Miami isn’t putting that out there. The company is for exposure purposes. It’s not setting a precedent of what the school is paying. Just what that certain start up was willing to pay. 800K for that much advertising is what they are paying for.

Maybe they all do. Universities have historically been pretty regressive in terms of IP rights. I think they are, in general, improving there, but it might be too late for some bridges to be rebuilt. On the other hand, some of them were burned so long ago that maybe there's hope.

Whoa, dude. No one needs your level-headed, logical thinking on this board. Well-organized responses are not welcome. This is a place for wild conjecture and worst-case scenarios!

Seriously though, that couldn't have been better stated. Let's add Dawson Garcia to that list that didn't even stick around on his team.
