The reason we needed experienced proven guys like TJS is because we really don't know what expect from the freshman initially. There will most certainly be a learning curve for all of them to adjust to B10. Plus we really haven't seen any of them or Dain play yet. Just because these freshman are "touted and new " doesn't mean they are ready to step right in or jump last year shiny new prices that have experience like Goode, or RJ. Personally I feel folks are discounting how solid and mistake free Goode played
I feel Goode is one of our team leaders....bot to mention reliable and productive.
As I was watching his last interview couldnt help but think I was listening to a future Power 5 coach.

Well, let's see:

(1) Insiders vindicated
(2) HDick angry and lashing out on social media at TTU, only to have UM Athletic admin box his ears. Posts subsequently retracted.
(3) Pete Nance on the table for us (perhaps)
(4) @Deep's kid in Champaign for college visit (it went well)
(5) Long discussion of where to lunch on said visit, including heartfelt reminiscences about campus eateries of yore that have gone to the great kitchen in the sky
(6) Subthread on timeline for expansions of Murphy's Pub since the late '80s. Revelation that adjoining BW3 was spectacularly mismanaged, leading to its demise, and that a certain poster on the board participated eagerly in said mismanagement.
(7) Debate concerning acting chops and range of John C. Reilly. Various John C Reilly GIFs beyond the std Loyalty offerings, including a fave of mine from Boogie Nights.
(8) Opposition to use of GIFs (particularly repeating the same ones) as communication medium on Loyalty
(9) Yours truly arguing the counter that, in fact, GIFs are an extremely potent communication tool, facilitate Loyalty member bonding, provide well-needed humor, and are (along with texting) an important emergent communication medium
(10) GIF of guy diving into swimming pool full of cash; allusion to Dan
(11) Banner day for Loyalty board, extending well into the night and the LAD VIP suite.
(12) Yeoman efforts of LAD participants to push the thread to 40/1k
(13) Morning revelation that @BretMyBeachHouse induced Dan to Crean various posts so that his would be the one-thousandth.

That's just off the top of my head. I ain't wading through 41 pages and 1,014 posts to refresh my memory.

:illinois:
Lol
Love the recap brother

Maybe I am the only one, but I think CH should stay because his talent is enough to compete with the incoming guys, and that they might have to try to beat him out for minutes. I like TSJ, but I think CH could at least match TSJ's numbers from last year, with a ceiling even higher. Nance would be a much harder guy for Coleman to outshine. As always, JMHO.

This team will be a lot of fun to watch next year…

It’s not about what we think. It’s about what CH thinks. Don’t forget TSJ only played 25 min per game last season. Personally, I don’t think TSJ drives CH away. It will be Nance if it happens. We shall see.

You got to play some of TY, Goode, and Epps or they gone the following year. All 3 of those strike me as really good talents.
Like every year, players are going to earn minutes. The rotation is gonna be deeper this year too with a roster ready to play faster (not quite like BU's 1st year - but IMO similar). Goode will get 15+ minutes, he has shown the effort, defense & shooting. TY & Epps look like studs, can't imagine they won't get good (8+) minutes.

Just wondering what our NIL commitment will be this year versus last year. I doubt there is any type of current NCAA requirement to report these figures in a public disclosure (maybe in the future). Everyday I wake up and say college basketball coaches jobs keep getting harder and harder.

Being a smaller Division 1 school without a lot of alumni will surely make their jobs harder. Seems to me the larger universities known as "basketball schools" will make it harder for smaller schools to compete. Predicting an NIL cap in the future like most professional sports.
A small but important clarification...

Professional sports have a salary cap, put in place by the NBA/MLB/NFL/etc. If the NCAA were to pay the players a salary, then they could certainly cap it.
Professional sports do not have an NIL cap. No one could tell Michael Jordan that Nike could not pay him more money.

Skyy says he is so completely recovered it's like the knee never even happened.
Know he said this but—-
Not consistent with his announcement when he mentioned Fletch getting him back to his old level.
Shouldn’t be a problem by October but why didn’t he play in the game with Ty?

No. But you can use your imagination right now and certainly the players are using their imagination right now.
Yeah, but I wonder how accurate the posts predicting minutes for last year’s team during the off season were. I’m guessing outside of the minutes predicted for maybe Trent and Kofi, they weren’t very accurate. Granted Curbelo was hurt, so that messed with predictions, but I’m guessing the minutes predicted for Hawk, RJ and Goode were pretty far off. But I get it, not much else to do as as we wait for the next piece of real news.

Epps is too talented to NOT see the court and i think he will get 15-20 mpg initially with a junk yard dog attitude........Harris is the sleeper pick for me to surprise a lot of us as far as his will to win and will be more of a contributor than many think.....................

I so love the new freshness of this year's squad and think we will be a top 25 team earlier than expected.........these new guys are very talented and will show the way for future recruits to join the speeding ascent to the top of college BB................................I really really do think that ........................................

Good a take as any, Pru. But I am a bit slower to embrace a group of random players who have never played as a team regardless of talent. The key to making them a team that wins is the coaches grasping how to fit them together. How long that takes varies for every team. Molding them into a group that will do what it takes for the name on the front of the jersey rather than the back is the challenge. We all know what this staff wants to get done, but breaking through the skulls that protect these young kids brains can be a difficult and frustrating endeavor. But if it gets done, it is a fascinating thing to watch develop.

Regardless, the Illini will go into next season with a roster that will perpetuate the enthusiasm...and insanity...of a forceful fan base....and this board. Go Illini!!!!

No one needs to be worried about how minutes will be dispersed. Injuries, foul trouble and more so bad games will happen for players on this roster. We have a ton of talent but also a ton of inexperience.

Best of luck to all the guys who entered the portal and left. All of them were going to get an uptick in playing time this year. That being said I am excited for the players that actually want to be part of the Illinois team. Illinois will and needs to add more bodies to this roster and I know they will.

Last day to declare for transfer portal is May 1st which will put the fire out. Last day to withdrawal from NBA Draft to retain college eligibility is June 1st and that will help clear the smoke a little more. Few hundred guys are declared for the draft right now so a decent number of guys could return and impact a college squad.

This is a great time to be an Illinois fan. BU and BB always have the motor running....

I don't see how Coleman's shooting percentages could take such a huge improvement to be what Shannon's were. Plus Shannon is better and a quicker defender even though Coleman is solid too.

I tend to agree but with lots of new players, they all need to play time to settle in to a new system. I hope Brad will be able to squeeze out enough time for freshmen. I don’t think playing most of the starters 30+ min like last year is a good idea for tournament.

This^^ How quickly can the frosh adjust to the pace and intensity of the game at this level? How quickly can they learn to be present on every possession at each end? How quickly can they master the offensive scheme(s) and learn to defend? How strong are they and how much work do they need to do to put on mass and develop power? (I always think of Eddie Johnson's remark that he got his a$$ handed to him in practice on a regular basis as a frosh, which stimulated him to get in the weight room in earnest over the summer.)

I enjoyed watching RJ and Luke develop during Jan-Mar. Luke seemed solid from the outset. RJ was a bit lost and timid, however, at times coming off the bench in early BT play. By March he was becoming a stud. It's a process. It's a process. It's a process. (Brad Pitt as Billy Beane.)
How dare you come onto this board and offer sound reasoning, historical fact, or common sense!!!! That will not fly and this is fair warning....don't ever do it again or you will be sorry, stoned, and ex-communicated to Michigan forever.

That said...I could not agree more

His comments about supporting his teammates entering the portal were the mark of a true leader.... the way he described his perspective was really mature. Someone you'd naturally respect and be willing to follow.

None of this flows through the universities. Presumably, people with money going to athletes are working with the schools to make sure they're doing things right.

But if I want to contact RJ and give him 100K to sign autographs for an hour at my business opening there's no obligation for RJ to report that to anyone except the IRS.

This is the part that is most frustrating to the coaches probably. You don't really know what you're competing against because so much of it is behind the curtain.

Losing the complete team of starters and 6/8 rotation players was greatly affected by the fact that 3 were Covid exemptions. That has had a significant contribution to the wild portal activity. It also meant we had not developed experienced players to step in those roles. Figuring out roles for next year is going to be difficult rather they are frosh or just new to the team. Another player capable of guarding a 5 is an absolute necessity, but any other players added would only be taken if they are better than current players or recruits. We have at least two deep currently except at center. Really wouldn’t understand taking a 3rd string player at any position (particularly when we have no seniors) so if additional players are added it’s because they are better than current roster players and assessed to be rotation players.

To me the Portal and NIL will make college basketball much more like AAU ball in terms of roster construction. Lots of moving parts every year and learning to play as a team on the fly. Thank God this year we have a full spring, summer and fall to mold these guys into a team. Think this new model will drive old school coaches nuts. But it is here to stay, so buckle up every year come April.
