Can we start a St. John's vs. SC thread.

Very late to the party having been (hangs head in embarrassment) working. Here you go. I give you the 1970 SI College Basketball preview issue. A feature was brand spankin' new arenas. Like Mackey. And Carolina Coliseum in Columbia, which I believe the 'Cocks left some time ago. SC was picked #2 preseason, to UCLA's #1. The Illini were projected #15 (alas, Harv brought 'em in at 5-9/11-12, losing nine consecutive BT games to end the season.) And the "Jamaica Redmen" as SI's writer dubbed St. John's, merited a mere mention in "Best of the Rest."

That's John Roche, dribbling the ball below. In case anyone cares. Hailed from NYC, of all places. I guess Lou Carnesecca whiffed on him.

SC has a higher profile, so it really ought to be a SC vs. St John's thread IMO.

The emergence of the Southeast Conference as a major roundball power has been one of the big developments the last few years.

Now there are more high-profile and successful programs in the National mix for top talent every year.

The default-mentality of ‘best places to go’ is no longer restricted to the Carolinas or Lawrence, Kansas or Spokane, Washington, or Tucson, Arizona, or the Westwood area of Los Angeles or the old legacy Big Ten football power schools or some of the old East Coast powers.

If it becomes fully fixed and emblazoned out ‘On the Street’ how potentially desirable the SEC is for young players coming up... this just adds another level of healthy competition and even more essential need for elite recruiters for all programs who aspire to be Top 20 each season.

And another big development over the last few years is that more and more top talent... both young guys and transfers... are becoming very familiar about where Champaign, Illinois is... and why they should come here.

Embrace the Orange, guys. You will learn to love the Prairie.

Agree. The transformation from football to football and basketball has been amazing. Lotta highly paid coaches and competing well for talent.

247 has 2 SEC schools with top-10 classes for 2022, and strangely Kentucky ain't one of them. (BIG has 4 - IL, tOSU, Indiana, and Michigan). Last year they had 3 ranked in the top 10, all different ones than 2022.

St. John's has a higher profile in almost every way I can think of.
Well you didn't think much. SEC >big east for starters. 2017 Final Four vs St Johns 1985. Plus they have BBV who I am pulling for him more since I like how he played and hate coach Cal. I think he will look forward to expanding his game there. Good luck BBV

I mean, would it really be Loyalty without going down this type of rabbit hole?

Honestly I get more concerned with the Recruiting Thread is nothing but boring recruiting posts. And usually we learn something. Like today I learned St. Johns is in Queens...and it's 43' above sea level. None of us knew that before today. Now you can use it in an unreasonable way to end a drunk argument.

"You don't even know the elevation of St. Johns University! Idiot!"

If you are arguing about profile in the NYC or New England area, sure. But go poll a random casual basketball fan elsewhere and see if they've seen more/heard more about St. Johns or South Carolina. The SEC has far more national visibility than the Big East, even if St. Johns has a stronger history. It's a lot easier to find South Carolina on TV nationwide that St. Johns.

Again, I said higher profile, not strongest historical program.
I actually see that St. John’s is on TV more than SC because FS1 regularly broadcasts Big East games. Can’t say I actually watched them this year (but don’t think I watched SC either). I’m sure SEC network broadcasts some SC games (I don’t watch the network), but seems like ESPN broadcasts the better schools in SEC more than SC and the other also rams in SEC.

Anyway, congrats to BBV. With him going to SC I’ll have a reason to notice how many SC games are broadcast.

This is actually highly relevant to Illinois basketball.

Brad Underwood served as an assistant with former South Carolina coach, Frank Martin at KSU.

Mike Anderson, head coach of St. John's, coached at Arkansas during the same time that current Illinois football coach Brett Bielema coached there. Therefore Anderson is friends with Bielema who is friends with Underwood. Additionally, Anderson played at Tulsa, where Bill Self coached before coming to Illinois.

And then, obviously, UC Santa Clara lost to Illinois 67-64 in the third place game of the 1952 national tournament.

If nothing else, this confirms that the world revolves around Illinois basketball.
