Weber's poor recruiting decisions had a lot to do with it. I am not going to mention names, but he did not pursue or slow played kids that would have come and who played well elsewhere. Meanwhile, he prioritized prospects he had no realistic chance of landing.
*cough* Fred Van Vleet *cough*

(a nod of thanks to IlliniCub 16 as well)

Recently won MVP of the first series of the Addidas Next Generation Tournament. I don't have a source but if you saw what I saw you know that it is him. Also checks all the boxes of what is known about this "mystery big".

"Zacharie Perrin (FRA) | 6-10 Big | Antibes

C-RAM: 10.8 (Gold Badge - #1 overall in event)

Zacharie Perrin was a pleasant surprise in Varese. I wasn’t thrilled with him last summer at Euro U18 Challengers in Tel Aviv, but he looked like a very improved player this time around. Above all, he played with a lot more confidence and was a factor on both sides of the court. Perrin has decent size with a strong build (wide mid-section) and he is quite mobile, too…he really runs the court well. He plays mostly inside but he showed the ability to shoot it from the high post area, as well (his shot is very flat and is not very fluid, however).....He has the mobility to switch on to smaller players. Overall, he looks the part of a good prospect for both the college and pro levels.

"Who was the best player in the tournament?
Zacharie Perrin was the consensus MVP of the competition. The 2004-born french big was the leader of the Next Generation Team, and he proved to be one of the most versatile big men in his generation. He was dominant under the boards for the whole weekend, showing excellent sense of the position and skills. He still has to add long-range shots to his skillset, to become a versatile offensive threat at the upper level."

Is this a guy we are looking at? He brings some things we could use. Another low post guy who can move and rebound. If he can pick and pop, lets sign him with one of the last two rides we have.

Lol so no you didn't hear anything.
Ok, so this guy checks every box of what we know about the guy we are looking at from his height, to his nationality, to age, to more. Furthermore, and I'll let you be the judge of the significance of this, but an Instagram account named "Geoff Alexander", who mainly follows current and former Illini players plus personal friends, happens to follow him. Geoff is confirmed to be the coach recruiting him. I would be extremely shocked if Perrin is not the big that we are looking at.

Here's a hot take: Weber was a fantastic X's and O's coach who failed to win at the recruiting game because he wouldn't play it the way needed to be successful. Remember when Derrick Rose and company visited him and his team (brother I think?) asked him, "What can you do for us?" Weber left the room. His integrity was a huge part of his downfall.
I think Weber was extremely overrated as far as X's and O's. He actually had some very good recruiting classes(albeit not the top 10 guys), but couldn't manage his roster and didn't give his freshmen the minutes they deserved. Look at our classes from 08-11 and tell me most teams in the country wouldn't want that.

Some of us are told to forget about Nance. I will do that on the day he publicly declares his decision. Until that time comes, I'll continue to hold out hope.
