Because I'm sure you were gushing over Fred Van Vleet coming out of high school, of course. Let's not act like he was a sure thing that we passed over. Plus our roster was already loaded full of top 100 talent.*cough* Fred Van Vleet *cough*
(a nod of thanks to IlliniCub 16 as well)
Didn't Snacks over sleep on the day he was to see him at an open gym? Thought I read this from good sources, illini media.Because I'm sure you were gushing over Fred Van Vleet coming out of high school, of course. What? We had talent but we're absolutely short of PG talent.Because I'm sure you were gushing over Fred Van Vleet coming out of high school, of course. Let's not act like he was a sure thing that we passed over. Plus our roster was already loaded full of top 100 talent.
VanVleet wasn't on the prime AAU circuit. However I believe Weber saw him in person. This was actually a classic case where in-state edge meant something.Honestly Van Vleet was missed by everyone outside of Witchata. The worst miss in my watching career was Michael Finley.
Like another PG?
Well we got lucky kinda. We were desperate due to other recruiting failures and were pretty much relegated to Michael Orris or Van Vleet. There were many on the boards saying Van Vleet was a stud. We of course took Orris, which proved to be a very bad decision. But hey Weber, liked Orris so much, he brought him to Kansas State to not play him there too.Because I'm sure you were gushing over Fred Van Vleet coming out of high school, of course. Did we not have Brandon Paul, DJ Richardson, and Tracy Abrams at the guard spot who were all top 100? Once Weber left we nearly went to the sweet 16 even after Leonard left. Guards were a strong spot that year.Of course, I actually was gushing over Fred Van Vleet coming out of Rockford Auburn, as were many of us locals who had observed his stellar career. He was the best player in the conference by far and was curiously ignored by major programs.
I'll leave you to figure out what a sure thing is, but finding, recruiting and landing a player with his talent is sort of exactly why Weber was paid his millions as has been stated. Weber failed because of his poor recruiting and he and his coaches whiffed big time on this one, an in-state talent as well.
^^^+1000HA. Yep…I have zero idea why I typed CG, but I’m old and technology challenged and I was unsure how to edit after the post.
Point remains the same….. JG was great for Illinois Basketball and was committed to our program and culture for the three years he was here. Why some haters feel the need to spew such negativity I simply do not understand.
To the haters….try to change the narrative and celebrate the positives. The world is a heck of a lot more beautiful that way.
This name doesn’t seemingly ever get brought up but Alando Tucker from Lockport was a massive miss that became BTPOTY.Honestly Van Vleet was missed by everyone outside of Witchata. The worst miss in my watching career was Michael Finley.
