I think this has to do with development:
Fears is a 2023 recruit in the 40's range
ZZ is a 2024 and not ranked (probably around 150ish)
I would guess the reason Fears is going to OE is for money.
With that assumption, it might come down to who offers him more money.
Fears is focused on getting to the NBA.
I would guess the reason for ZZ going to OE is for coaching/development/resources.
Right now, ZZ is a project. With his current rating and status of ILL BBall, I could definitely see him being a redshirt candidate.
ZZ is focused on being good enough to make an ILL roster (his "dream" school)

Not too long ago we thought either of Boswell, Fears, or DaiDai were a must get in '23. Nary did we know that we would end up with Skyy.
I feel the blue bloods are like the varsity QB in HS. Keep a couple of the ladies close for when needed and a large number on standby when the primary are taken by someone else.
Always have to throw a text or offer out there to keep the possibilities open if the need arises.

My understanding is you can earn NIL money at OE and maintain eligibility. But you don't maintain eligibility if you are paid a salary by OE. Right?I know exactly why they're doing it

Agreed. I would also add that Fears is a top 50 PG who was (is) likely to play a significant role in East Lansing next season. He was a priority for them in this cycle. ZZ is a couple years out from playing for us, and isn't widely considered a top 100 at this point in his development. We have a lot of time to fill that spot should he choose to continue to play at OE rather than enroll in Champaign. I don't know anything, but I assume our pursuit of his brother may have had something to do with his offer in the first place.
I'll put it this way, if Morez Johnson announces tomorrow that he is going to go to OE in the coming season, our feelings would probably match how MSU fans are feeling about Fears today. ZZ just doesn't move our needle much in any direction at this point in time. There will be a lot of roster movement between now and the start of the 2024 season.

Is there evidence that MSU fans are freaking out about this? I perused twitter and didn't see anything of the sort. And why would they? The plan, as of now, appears to be to maintain eligibility and end up at MSU. If he does wind up at a different school for whatever reason, I'm not getting what that has to do with Overtime Elite.
He just got the offer he was wanting a couple of hours ago ... He would be an insanely tough get, so I don't think he will become a super high priority although the staff loves his game ... Kid will finish top 10 nationally ...
Fears is trying to get as much money as possible. He didn't want to share the money at La Lu with Kaleb Glenn especially after playing this summer with him ... Let's just say there was some tension ...
Also why I am saying that Fears may not wind up in East Lansing ... They are about to get Xavier Booker within the next couple weeks and they lead for Devin Royal as well ... Fears may publicly show that he is excited about that, but Izzo better bring the money and the promise of 10+ shots a game or Fears probably looks elsewhere ... That's just what I have heard though ...
