I mean, guys, we can't talk about Carlwell without making note of him being severely injured and nearly dying in the Jamar Smith incident.
For sure. He's fortunate not to have suffered long-term damage from that concussion (as far as it appears.) Wasn't he in a coma for a week?

What happened with Jamar was very sad. The summer after Jamar's DUI he was detained in Campustown and found to have been drinking in violation of his probation, and kicked off the team permanently. A month later I happened to see the Illini play the reigning Canadian university national champion team, Carleton Univ, in Ottawa, where I lived at the time. Small gym (~1500 seats) and great atmosphere. The Illini won in OT. McCamey was a frosh and looked pretty good. Steve Holdren (!) was our high scorer, IIRC. Rodney Alexander hit the game-winner. Jeff Jordan was on the bench and the Canadians heckled him mercilessly about his dad.

After the game I was chatting with some Illini fans who were following the team on its swing through Ontario and Quebec. One guy was apparently a high-$$$ booster. He and I talked about Jamar,. He said that in the spring, Jamar's ankle was clearly healed (he'd missed almost all the preceding season with a sprain.) The guy said he had attended lots of practices and that Jamar's shot and mobility looked better than ever. Said he'd never seen a purer shooter in an Illini uniform than Jamar that spring/summer. He thought it was a devastating loss to the team.

We really needed him during that '07-'08 season. Very good, sensitive kid, from what I could tell at the time. I always wondered whether the pressure and spotlight were too much, too soon for him.

He and Chester were tight. I hope they still are.

Both were mediocre recruiters/program builders.
The things is, both Weber and Groce had plenty of players throughout their downfalls. Ironically the only really talent-deficient team this program has had in the last 25 (shoot, arguably closer to 50) years was the 08-09 team that finished 2nd in the B1G and got a 5 seed.

Recruiting was neither the problem nor the solution for those situations, in a way I think our resurgence has very clearly demonstrated.

Yea no. We can and already are doing better than this. I think its going to be the exception to see them taking guys outside the top 100 unless they are late bloomers or very obviously under-rated. At this point I'm expecting an almost yearly dose of guys in the top-50 with the occasional top-30/5 star commit.
I'm guessing we might settle into being more portal-heavy than some of our peers. In any event the roster building process of college basketball is radically different than when all of these Bruce Weber hijinks happened, and may continue to change further.

What gives me a lot of confidence in Underwood is his creativity and flexibility, and the sense that he's building backwards from what the team's needs are rather than forwards from a clingy para-social relationship with whatever 15 year old is being buzzed about in Chicagoland youth basketball circles.

Brian Carlwell SDSU (Mountain West)
FR ILL 2ppg 1 rbg
SO ILL DNP
JR SDSU 5 ppg 3 rbg
SR SDSU 4 ppg 3 rbg

I think I would have preferred Weber sign JaValle McGee

Javale McGee Nevada
FR 3ppg 2 rbg
SO 14 ppg 7 rbg
1st round NBA draft pick (18th) 14 year NBA career

Hindsight is 20/20. I said at the time of their recruitment.

Looking past Hansberry, is the timeline for Nojus is shortening? Some have alluded to the possibility of a fall '23 commitment.

I hate to break it to you but staff needs to see more of Nojus. They are just not quite ready to take his commitment. Hey, what do I know, that same source said Perrin will be here on the 1st. :DAs i've said we've got a long way to go on those '024's.

So basically once Amani commits we have weeks, maybe months, of no news, off-topic posts to fill the void, and complaints about off-topic posts to look forward to?

You have to wonder how Weber’s tenure changes if Richmond is the player we all thought we were getting paired with Meyers.
